I need your help...landing page has 25,516 visitors and only 154 email sign ups...

I created a humorous relationship advice website that highlights characteristics (some serious, some not) of perpetually single women. We call them "red flags" and write 2-3 articles a week pointing out various red flags. The site is called 100 Red Flags if you want to search for it in your search engine to see what it looks like. It's the first thing that should pop up in search results for that phrase. I'm a new member so I cannot post links.

Over the past 3 months, the site has generated 25K+ new visitors thanks to feature articles and guest posts in online magazines like AskMen, Essence, YourTango, and Thrillist.

The problem is that these 25K+ new visits have only generated 154 new email sign ups. I was wondering if anyone had advice on how to increase our email opt in rate and get more people to join our email list.

Thanks,
Ryan

Cool website and kudos for generation that many traffic. You're off to a good start.

If I were you, I would add the subscription box somewhere more visible. For instance, one of those little pop up box. I've never tried that but I've read they work well.

Anyway, it can be done at aweber if you're interested.

Also, give a better reason for signing up. Maybe a free ebook about getting a girl.

      Hello Ryan

I'm a great believer in getting people to think for themselves rather than simply giving away the answers all the time.

      You tell me...

What do you think the solution is that you're looking for?

In my opinion there is a poor call to action. For one it doesn't stand out too much and for my opting all I'm getting is a top ten list? Get a bigger offer and stronger call to action.

For example things on like men's health will say something like:

Download a free copy of our exclusive black book:

13 things you don’t know she secretly desires in bed.

$27 value yours FREE today, download now!!!

Ouch, ouch, I am in so much pain, it hurts to laugh so hard!

BUT, to answer your question, I personally didn't sign-up because you're giving the milk away, so why buy the cow?

You need to give a better incentive for signing-up. The top 10 list is just not motivating enough to accept all of the marketing that you might send at me.

Not sure I would go with the pop-up opt in, especially if most of that traffic came from AskMen and the like... I doubt the readers have much patience.

...And I just thought of one more thing. The writing was entertaining, but a little long considering the niche, and probably the audience.

I'm with Mike. The top 10 Red Flags is just not enough to get me to want to sign up. Think of something you would want to sell to your opt ins, and then give it to them for free. If you provide value, the people will sign up.

You might also want to check out related problems in your target audience and offer them some solutions/alternative/training/techniques or something like that.

I would think about offering something of a little bit more value or intrigue. Something that solves their problems or hits an emotion with them.

The good thing is that the concept of your site is pretty broad and you shouldn't have any shortage of ideas on a better freebie to entice them with.

Kamikaze hit the nail, Value man, always always always, no value, no opt in, and the other wise fellow that touched on another issue, picture this, you view your page, but youre just one of the 25,000 viewers, all your content they already have access to, so why opt in when they can just click a tab,

so here's what you do, write an article pack, 10 3 page articles, keep it simple, make it something they want to read, offer that as "incentive to opt in" create a link on your main page,

a very short banner but big enough to see, and visually attractive enough and with a tiny bit of relevant information, that when clicked will lead them to a squeeze page,

this is where they put in their email and then clicking on the subscribe button should lead them to a download page, this is where you will have a button linked to download the free product, and you can also add banners for paid or affiliate offers, best way to do it i've found so far, my conversion rates hit around 50-70 percent on my squeeze pages, if you want i can spend a little time online with you whenever you have time and walk you through the process, its not hard, it just depends on how much you know about settting up pages,

if you need anything just go over to my blog and leave a comment or click the contact link under my header, that will hook you up with my email, best of luck to you, and you ever need anything and cant find the info, if i cant help i know another honest guy who can

I didn't even see the opt in form the first time I looked at the site. I scrolled down looking at the content and missed it completely.

Call to action is weak but that may be in some part due to your free offer.

You're offering negatives/problems (top 10 red flags) who wants negatives?
Offer solutions, solve a common problem and make it of significant value. Make people want it.

Check out a cool product called Popup Domination. Buy that.

Then figure out your average time on site via Google Analytics, and set the pop up to come about 10 seconds before that time to maximize peoples conversions without annoying people.

Also, maybe think of a much cooler way (with red font) to tell them exactly what they are getting and REALLY drive home the benefits of exactly what they get and why they need to be on your list.

If you want optins you need to re-organize your optin box locations. These five locations work well:

    1. Feature box
    2. Top of sidebar (the visit counter is using valuable real estate. Does anyone really care how many visitors you get?)
    3. End of each post
    4. Your about-us page
    5. Dedicated subscription page (landing page describing why they should optin)

I'd have the submit a red flag an optin box. People that want to interact are really interested in your site. Get their e-mail, then direct them to that page you now click directly to.

Put those folks on your list named "submit red flag". Have something to upsell them, but only lay your link low in the 1st responder they receive from you. No sales stuff, just a link.

There's other things you can do on your site. With the traffic you're getting I'd fine tune the site to convert.
