I'm not sure that a lot of warriors even realize that button exists, or what it is for. Especially the newer members.

Also, as is quite often with myself, many are in such a hurry to browse through the posts to see what is new or relevant to what they are searching for, they just don't think of hitting the "thanks" button when they find something helpful or at least well thought out.

I think as your participation levels rise and more people become familiar with your advice, you'll get more thanks. At least that's the way it appears.

I swear 2 people can say the exact same thing and one will get inundated with Thanks and the other will get nothing.

It reminds me of this commercial from a few years back.

I say bring back the drink button.

I used to have to refund "beers" because I was getting them with messages - thanks for that, here's my product, please review it. Seriously wish I could have refunded those "beers" all over those senders in the exact way the average drunk "refunds" a beer to the porcelain gods. Had to use a refund button instead.

There are a lot of people that will always "Thank" people they like, even if the post is lacking. Others believe the "Thanks" button shows how much knowledge specific people have, and they share "Thanks" by setting up circles of thanking their friends.

In truth, extremely helpful threads should be rated with stars. This is something that the forum can be sorted by, and it shows that the thread is helpful before you click on it. The problem is that the star rating system is hidden beneath a "Rate This Thread" button at the top of each original thread. Many threads filled with great information aren't rated, and slowly fall into the depths of the forum.

Just because a person is paranoid doesn't mean that someone is not out to get them

Putting it another way, just because something useful is abused doesn't mean that it can't be used as intended.

As far as the Thanks button, how many people do we see putting in one liners instead of just hitting the Thanks button (once they have enough posts to see it.)

We "see" the one line wonders and even those who give thanks.

The star trolls do their damage unseen. Well, maybe the mods see them.

Even if a post didn't help you but if you feel that it is helpful in general, why not show some appreciation and spread thanks.

I personally thank those posts that increase my knowledge or help me in particular. The counterpoint to your argument is 'thanking' everything more than 50 words that offers some kind of help. I think individual discretion is very important.

Don't underestimate the power of doing those little jobs.

5 garbage tasks is worth 3 bunches of flowers. It's much cheaper to just take the trash out

I haven't been here very long myself, but I have found the support here to be phenomenal. As a result I hit the thanks button any time someone takes the time to read my posts and comment (unless I forget, because although I mean well I tend to have a very short attention span).

I figure hitting that button is the least I can do. I really cannot thank the kind folks here enough for being so helpful. I lurked for a while because I was afraid I would be attacked because of my newb IM status, but I have been pleasantly surprised.

Now, time to set a plan in place to make some money so that I can afford to join the War Room!

I give 'thanks' when I find a post helpful, funny, witty, whatever.

Although I will say this - "Thanks" is a better system than "Rep"

If you think the thanks gets abused, you would really hate to see rep.. lol

A lot of people don't even have a Thanks button because they don't yet have enough posts to show the button.

Most of those don't even realize they could have such an opportunity if they only had made a few more posts. Took me quite a lot of searching around to find out that the thank you button would only appear after making five posts.

Hope that helps those who may not yet have the button available. And also may help explain why many posts may not be thanked so much. Especially ones that may attract primarily newbies or guests.

* Also note the words "thank" and "you" do not work separately in the search function, as they are too generic and much used. Putting them both in quotes like "thank you" does work, but wouldn't find "thanks button". A bit hard to narrow down.

I completely agree with your reasoning and personally thank those who have helped me. It does definitely encourage me to post high quality posts and assist people when people 'thank' my posts. It persuades me that there are people out there benefiting from my comments. In fact, I usually always check my thanked posts and see who thanked me and for what post. Many times, I expand on my reasoning in threads with thanked posts to give others my complete insights.

I think you have to post a certain number of times before the 'Thanks' button is available to you. Also, sometimes it just doesn't load on the page. I don't know if those are reasons that people aren't thanked as much as you think they should be.

Perhaps people do not appreciate the importance of the thank you button. Maybe some do not know of its existence.

Alot of the time I think people are just busy reading posts or looking for an

answer and don't even think about thank button. Escpecially since it only shows up

after a certain # of posts I have heard. If a post is good... it should be thanked I say.
