Best ways/places to promote affiliate links?

Hi everyone, I'm fairly new to Internet Marketing and thought I would start earning my first few dollars through affiliate marketing.
Now, I've signed up on clickbank, rapbank and payzeno.
Tried to promote my links on certain forums, didn't work quite as wel as I was hoping. No sales at all.

Would the best way be to host a domain/website and add my links to the site?
And then trying to get traffic to it?

Just thinking out loud, hoping to get some answers from the experts on here.
My knowledge about IM is still very basic, but I'm learning something new every day. Someday I'll get there.

Thanks.

IMHO, you should get a domain and hosting and create a "review site". Review the products you are promoting, but do it with a twist.

Write your article saying that you bought the product and you are very mad the the person who sold it to you. You bought it for $XXX amount, but your friend found a discount link online and got it for $XX. Make sure you say the product was great, you just wish you could have gotten it cheaper! At the end of the article say something like "I can't believe I ended up paying XXX when I could have just gone HERE (insert your aff link) and only paid XX!"

That might get you some sales.

If you are looking at something new and different all together, take a look at the guide I wrote. (In my sig)

Thanks for the great answer. Will definitely try that out. Seems like a pretty good idea if I think about it. Will check your sig too.

When I first started with IM, having a strong article marketing campaign worked really well. Then with some Google updates, it wasn't as good as it used to be, so I took the plunge and got my own website with hosting and everything.

I've not looked back at article marketing (at least in the sense that I was using it for then) and I've made more money by having my own blog and website. Plus, it's a lot easier to update your stuff the way you want once you figure it all out.

I recommend that you figure out what you want to promote, and make a mini authority site around it. Make several pages or several posts. Then decide which path you choose to generate traffic. SEO, PPC, etc.

If you do SEO, make sure that you link to different pages/posts within your blog instead of all of your backlinks pointing toward your home page. I feel better about SEO for me, but I've really focused on it exclusively since I started my own website. PPC has definitely a faster turn around time for traffic, but you run the risk of losing more money than you make if you aren't really sure what you're doing,

I agree with this. Creating a mini-authority site around one, high commission affiliate program is the way to do it and make good money. Use a subtle approach and create posts/articles that target your key buyer and provide a lot of value on the site to win their trust for recommendations. Make sure to include articles about products you don't recommend as well, and good reasons why that resonate with your viewer and builds your trust even more. When you let loose with the high ticket item you do recommend, create a bonus offer with it - just use some good plr products if you don't have your own - and see what happens. Takes some time to do it like this, but it works.

ok but you have to find a product that has a hidden page
only for affiliates with a discounted price
while merchants typically have a sales page the same for everybody

    Use yahoo answers.
    It can bring conversions.
It will take a while to build an account with rep but it's worth it.

It really depends upon the product, but what you really need
to be asking is "Who are your ideal customers, and where do
    they hang out online?"

If they spend time of forums then that's the right place, but
it should probably be niche forums related to the product
    that you are selling.

I've done everything from article marketing, to paid advertising,
to writing ebooks with the intention of using those to show
    the need for a product.

Social media works well for me, but as a mechanism to let
people know about webinars, which are currently one of my
    favorite ways to sell products.

Do your research first. Find out everything you can about who your target market is. How old are they? Where do they live, are they educated? male or female? What are they already buying and how much are they paying. Can you make a better product cheaper? Improving on something that is already out there is better than reinventing the wheel. What problems are they facing that you can help them solve.

When you find out the questions to these answers it is far easier to create ad copy that speaks in their words they are using and familiar with. Put up a 3X5 card with your target market Bio and tape it to your computer.

You can try places like free classified ads. Example; craigslists, backpage, USfreeads and more. Article marketing should help.

    Thanks!

I would suggest to start building an email list. There is no easier way to get targeted clicks on affiliate links than by sending out promotional offers to your subscribers.

You can even automate the process by creating a follow up. All you need to do then is create a squeeze page and focus on driving traffic to that squeeze page that might be interested in the offers you're promoting in your funnel.

Some good advice on this thread here. I would attack it from multiple angles, but of course not all at the same time.

Start with the online ads (craigslist) because it get traffic quickly. WHAT EVER YOU DO DON'T KEEP ALL YOUR EGGS IN YOUR CRAIGSLIST BASKET!!

Have your ads pointed to your site.

I have actually used macmiller's idea in my own craigslist ads before, but I was selling my own product not being an affiliate. Same concept though. I sold my product for $20 then made an identical sales page with a $5 price on it. I then put the ad on craigslist saying "man I pay $20 but then found it for $5 that my luck. Her is the link to the $5 version". THIS REALLY DOES WORK.

Then I would choose a second traffic angel to take on. Either youtube, or SEO. You want to start building traffic that that doesn't require you to be re-posting ads all the time.

What an interesting idea, TheWillisWay and macmiller! I've got to try that
          one myself ;-)

I also find that giving away presell reports (with some valuable info that
answers a burning question and promises more to come) as a lead
generation device works really well. And of course that way you're also
building your list! And then you can promote all kinds of related and
          follow-up products!

OK, I'm confused here. Every single one of the networks I'm on say NO craigslist promotions. Why are so many people suggesting craigslist? They also prohibit forum promoting. I need some free traffic sources to help me get started as well, but I certainly don't want that money sitting in my affiliate account and I can't touch it because I broke the rules. Anyone??

I would figure out a niche and register a domain. Then I would create a simple wordpress site. From there I would create a facebook fan page and promote it by connecting to people on FB. Hopefully that should help to drive some initial sales.

Ehm, doing that old BS spamming on forums will get you banned from them and labeled as spammer.
At least get your own site and forget that spammy HaR stuff.

Here's a little tip for any type of affiliate marketing. Whatever way you get people to your offer, you want to always send your offer to a squeeze page first where they have to enter their email to get to your offer.

However, when they land on your squeeze page, I always have a video that I make that tells about the product first, BEFORE I ever ask for them to sign up for anything. In fact, I ask them to NOT sign up until they watch the video first.

I do this for a "how to meet women" course that I promote. (and every site) In the video I like to talk to the viewer as if they are my friend and I am explaining to them how the product helped me. It's all about NOT pushing products on people. I don't make stuff up, that's why I only like promote things I use, or, I always buy a product 1st to see what it's about. It's better to let people make their own decisions to seek more, or, at least let them "think" they are making the decision.

I use paid ads mostly, and, if you are going to do it this way, you can go to the product owner and ask for a free copy to review it. They'll usually give you one for free to promote, (why wouldn't they? You're paying to advertise their product)

Also, when you create a video about the product, it will go to Youtube (I use YT 'cause it's free) and that gives you another automatic way to promote the product. Since I'm on Youtube anyway, I go and find similar product reviews, and post comments with a link to my video and squeeze page.

(I do both positive and negative comments)Here's what I have been doing for the comments. I find a competitor product video, as with the How To Meet Women I especially target women who are posting How To Meet Women. I then say:

"Why would you EVER want to listen to a woman about picking up on women? Do they pick up on women? NO! I would rather learn how to meet women from a dude that ACTUALLY pick up women. Not some theory a woman has. I want facts from someone with experience! See what I'm talking about here: (insert Link here)" and many variations of that. Always watch the video so you can make specific comments and not just spammy comments.

And that's it. And I add all this in with Paid ads, Facebook, Bing, and MAYBE adwords. And keep adding and adding to it until I dominate the niche. More videos, more ads, more places. And test, test test! Tracking is huge!
Tracking202 is free. That's what I use. (I think that's the name) There's more to it than that, but this is the base of it.
