I'm Going To Become A Health Expert - It's a Piece Of Cake!

Having read in another thread the discussion about Perry Belcher being convicted for making unsubstantiated claims for health products, I found this BBC news story ironic

BBC NEWS | Health | Cold and flu 'can affect driving'

Basically, it's not safe to drive when you have flu. Really? It took a bunch of doctors and insurance experts to work that out?

The health niche is like a minefield and you can easily get into trouble without a whole load of disclaimers but it seems like common sense sometimes goes out of the window.

Question: what has the Nobel Peace Prize to do with Perry Belcher? I've not seen the connection made prior to your post here.

Nor during the post. It was you that mentioned the Nobel Peace Prize

The OP just said a Nobel Prize. There are several categories of NP, including one for medicine - which was the subject of the original post.

This is exactly why, even though I'm a career nurse with nearly 30 yrs experience, I steer clear of any medical niches like the plague.

I'm not willing to step into that arena because of the liability. Period.

    STOP THE PRESSES!

AUTHORITIES OFFER TIPS TO AVOID SERIOUS INJURY

Local authorities have received complaints of people slipping on the ice. Serious injuries have resulted; including broken bones, muscle strain, sprains, and hurt pride.

Injuries are especially severe on ice-covered stairways. Luckily, their years if training have allowed them to develop certain techniques to reduce injury.

The first technique is to use rubber-soled shoes to increase traction.

Next, local authorities point out that many stairways have a protrusion sticking out, and running parallel with the staris. The technical name for this protrusion is a "railing". They recommend using a free hand to "hold on to" the railing to give extra stability.

Another advanced technique they suggest is the application of a chemical that is referred to as "salt". Somehow it causes the ice to melt, thereby reducing its effectiveness in causing injury.

The authorities offered a final tip, though quite technical in nature, they were re-assuring in the belief that people can learn it. They called this technique "walking slower".

I wanted to use the toilet in IKEA today. There was a cleaner blocking the door, not allowing anyone access.

"Is there someone in there cleaning?" I asked.

      "No."

"Then why can't I go in?"

"Because I've washed the floor and according to health and safety I'm not allowed to let anyone in until it is completely dry."

"So," I asked, "How long will that be?"

      "Usually about 20 minutes."

It seems the guy has to just stand in front of the door for nearly half an hour each time he cleans the floor to stop anyone being exposed to the risk of slipping over.

The really odd thing is that the toilet is floored in non-slip floor tiles.

      Go figure.

And if he used his noddle and cleaned half the floor at a time, putting the usual warning signs etc out he would have been fine.

I love it when people say "According to health & Safety" it means they don't have a clue what they are talking about lol

Hmmm. I read a story recently that came back to mind when I saw this.

Because of a 6-year old boy being killed at a monster truck rally, the public was concerned about safety at all of them. One promoter, a George Eisenhart, went on TV telling people that no-one had ever been injured at any of his events, other than a woman slipping in the aisle. He stressed the many precautions his company took to make sure the customers were safe.

The next day, he stepped out of the safety zone at his show, right in front of an oncoming monster truck, and was killed.

The version I read was from Randy Cassingham's thoroughly enjoyable, "This Is True."

And ironically, this episode is likely to have created many other 'wet floors' in places where they are not wanted. But the bloke wouldn't get to stand around for 20 minutes otherwise.

I knew there was something I liked about you. Randy is one of my favorite writers. And he and his wife are just really cool people.

I have a lifetime premium subscription to "True." Seriously. (Don't ask.)

I also have a huge stack of the regular GOOHF cards left, out of the original 1000 (with an appropriate domain on them - weirder.com), 100 or so of the plastic GOOHF cards, GOOHF water bottles, GOOHF travel mugs, a GOOHF business card holder, two of the giant lenticular GOOHF cards, and ... one of only two existing GOOHF pillows! Yes, hand-crafted, by the lovely Mrs. Cassingham herself. (Are you drooling with envy yet?)

Most of the people who met me when I used to go to conferences have one or more of the cards. I think everyone in this business should.

For those among us who are living deprived (or depraved) existences, GOOHF stands for "Get Out of Hell Free."

If you want an example of taking a simple experience and turning it into a franchise, check out the site, and read the story of how the cards came to be. Randy has sold a lot of them (over a million), along with custom cards to premium subscribers, with their URLs on them, and a bunch of other merchandise bearing the card image.

This is brilliant stuff. Really. I highly recommend reading it.

Yes, folks, I am a "True" believer.

WARNING: Failure to wash your hands can spread germs!

Disclaimer- Hand washing, while recommended by many individuals is not certain protection from any disease. Even when hand washing might otherwise be effective, such as in the case of the common cold virus, proper hand washing methods must be employed, including use of a sufficient amount of soap, advanced scrubbing techniques, and ample water. Cleanliness of the sink and surrounding area can also impact the effectiveness of the hand washing. No guarantees are made as to the purity of the water - especially in the case of municipal water supplies. Sealed, bottled water is preferable, and is most effective when used in conjunction with a sealed bottle of antibacterial hand soap. Please note that anti-bacterial hand soap will not kill viral infections; it will only assist in removal of the virus from the surface of the skin. The above advice should only be taken as a guideline - do not rely on it for prevention of disease without first discussing your exact situation with a physician, or preferably an immunologist.

I started visualizing the story about people sticking their tongues to a frozen flagpole and getting stuck. This actually happened and made the news recently.

    Here's my dilemma.

What if I am not wearing gloves, and if my hand is wet, should I grab hold of the railing and have my hand get stuck? Or should I not take the chance and risk falling?

What are the liabilities if I grab hold of the railing?

    Inquiring minds want to know.

    Thanks,

    John

PS it does get a bit ridiculous.
