Articles: don't just Digg, Mixx it up!

I like to publish new articles and other content on my own site first to get original content. This has really boosted my search results.

When I publish new content I want to get indexed quickly. I used to use Digg for this and it worked a charm. But the last few times I suddenly stopped seeing results. The Digg link was indexed but my new page didn't show up for days.

I don't know if Digg has switched to "nofollow" or if Google just caught on to my tactics and stopped cooperating. That seems unlikely.

But then I discovered Mixx.com and I'm getting the results I used to have from Digg: new pages indexed within minutes. Mixx is also real easy to use and gives great "dofollow" backlinks.

Mixx.com is good. I don't remember, but I think I've learned about this website on Mashable or TechCrunch and according to the guys who were "reviewing" mixx.com - it was catching up with Digg.

I've decided to do some tests and the results were pretty good, but I still love Digg though ;-)

They're not even in the same ballpark: SnapShot of digg.com (rank #21), mixx.com (#1,884) - Compete

Notice how the line for Mixx doesn't even get above the first tick. The meme Mixx/Twitter is catching Digg is merely wishful thinking by people with an agenda.

That's not to say you shouldn't submit to Mixx. It doesn't take nearly as many votes to build support for your link, and the Mixx post will rank in the SERPs for a while, which has the added benefit of taking up space that your competitors can't get.

Digg is still very much dofollow. It is the king of dofollow sites. Ignore Digg at your peril.

I suspect what you're seeing is from when Google adjusted its algorithm to look at the internal link support of social networking sites when evaluating an outbound link. So if you submit something from the same account and it only gets a few votes Google will see it as a weak submission and discount it heavily. They figured out that people were using social media spambots to spew out hundreds of 1 vote links and shut it down. The good news is that if you can get about 50 votes you'll have a critical mass of internal links and the outgoing link to your site is that much stronger.

But then I discovered Mixx.com and I'm getting the results I used to have from Digg: new pages indexed within minutes. Mixx is also real easy to use and gives great "dofollow" backlinks.
Actually, Mixx links are not very strong, which is why the Mixx article often outranks your parent post in the SERPs. They've done something sneaky over at Mixx as regards their link structure.

Getting indexed is only important if all you care about are ranking for keywords that no one else cares about. If you want to rank for anything even slightly competitive you'll have to do more than just get indexed.

A number of social media sites have gone dofollow for their published links and nofollow for upcoming in an attempt to ward off the spammers. This has the added benefit of an even stronger link if you can get your post onto the published list. For instance, the front page of Tip'd is currently a PR 5. It only took 10 votes for me to get my Twitter story to the front page yesterday. The front page of Sphinn is PR 6, and it only takes about 20 votes to hit it. I'll take those links over 1,000 junk PR 0 pligg links from these autosubmitting bots.

My twitter article from yesterday is currently on the front page of the search "twitter bad news", which has some pretty heavyweight competitors for that term. It got there on 10 votes from Tip'd.

So don't just submit your site to get it indexed. Do the extra work and drum up the votes to get the search engines to really take notice.
