Domain Renewal Group - Warning

This morning I received an official looking letter, posted in the US (I live in the UK at the moment), with the company logo of 'Domain Renewal Group' printed on the envelope.

I've got 30 or 40 domains registered, with several different registrars, but this name didn't ring a bell. Inside was a letter telling me 'as a courtesy to domain name holders' that my domain xxxxxxx.com is due to expire in the next few months (actually July of this year), and warning of the results of failing to renew. The thing is, this domain is not registered with Domain Renewal Group, I don't have an account with them and looking at their prices I have no intention of getting one! They are more than twice the price of my current registrar.

I'd hesitate to call this an outright scam, as the letter does state that it is not a bill, 'it is rather an easy means of payment should you decide to switch your domain name registration to the Domain Renewal Group'. However, the whole thing is designed to make you think at first glance that it is just a straight renewal of your domain name.

Please watch out if you get a mailing from this company, many people must be taken in by their methods to make it worth their while sending international mailings. There are much cheaper options available.

Mike.
