Getting an SSL error?

Never used an SSL before, thought it would make a site look more trustworthy in the eyes of people as a https. Unfortunately, I am getting this error:
Technical Details

www.(domain).com uses an invalid security certificate.

The certificate is only valid for (domain).com

(Error code: ssl_error_bad_cert_domain)
I tried installing wordpress as a www. and without the www. and in both cases I get this error when trying to visit my site. Obviously this would make the trust factor zero and keep everyone away from the site. And no, no scam, just thought it'd be good to have as a membership site.

Does this mean I was given a bad cert or could it be something else? No experience here, as mentioned. Any input would be appreciated!

Thanks!

After a quick google search all I could figure out is that

    1. the error is a common Firefox problem after changing some settings

    2. the provider sometimes messes up the settings of the certificate which can lead to the same error.

I use a german provider (all-inkl) that provides a kind of "pseudo" certificate where you have to put a long url in front of your url. So I can't use https://mydomain.com but https://strangeurl.tld/mydomain.com.

I simply redirected a subdomain to the long url to make it look pretty.

    Hope that helps!

    Thanks.

I was loading it in Firefox, so tried chrome and IE, and both get the same message trying to visit the site at www and without www.

Hmmm.. not sure I follow the 2nd part. Maybe I don't understand a SSL, but my belief would be having one, I shouldn't have to do something fancy to get my website to load without errors.

So either host set it up wrong or it is a bad cert. I guess.

Try contacting the provider of the cert and letting them know the error you are getting. They may have a quick fix, as I am sure the error you are getting is nothing new to them.

    Hope that helps.

I actually got it through the host, and he set it up and purchased it. So I did contact him and waiting to hear back, but wanted input from people who have experience with this stuff, to find out if it could be just human error or if I could have been given a bad SSL somehow.
