Confused over Hostgator and add on domains

Having recently purchased a 6 months subscription to Hostgator on the basis that I can create numerous add on domains to the one registered I am unable to do that. Does anyone know how this works? The two so-called add ons I have made so far had to be registered as individual domains and then added on. The help people there are no help in this matter but as so many warriors use this host I am sure someone knows.

    Hi, Norma.
I am not exactly sure I understand your issue, but this is how it works.

You buy the hosting from Hostgator and use it with a main domain name.
If you want to make new websites, you purchase NEW domain names and add them with Hostgator as add-on domains. Then You also need to set up the DNS with the company where you purchased the new domains (Hostgator provides you with the DNS when you initially purchase a hosting plan)...

After registering the new domain and pointing it to HostGator's nameservers, you go into cPanel and click the Addon domain link. This is where you choose a directory where your new site will exist.

It sounds like you were actually looking to create subdomains rather than addons.

Addons are simply additional domains that can be added to your existing account (e.g. google.com, yahoo.com etc.) This would always require you to purchase a new domain and add it onto your account, hence the name.

Subdomains are attached to the current account and can be added at any time without the need for a new domain purchase. They work similarly, but are always attached to the home domain (e.g maps.google.com, mail.yahoo.com, etc.)

The difference is subtle but important. That may have been the problem that HG support was having- they may have been confused as to what you needed.

      Hope that helps,
      RJ

I'm not sure if I'm understanding you but you still need to register the new domains with a registrar, ie Hostgator, Namecheap, GoDaddy etc, and then you add the domain to your existing hosting at Hostgator.

    Hello Norma

    BostonDave here....

It does not really matter where you host, as long as it has cpanel and
your hosting says you can have mutiple domains. They really just run off of your main site, if you do not want to buy another domain, there is no reason to... for example.... say you had www(dot)abcd.com you would go into your cpanel and make a sub-domain as www(dot)abcd.com/lists and then you could do www(dot)abcd.com/fish...now that is if your host lets you have multiple. I know that the lowest hostgator account they have... I think it's called hatchling, you can have only one domain. Believe me I'm no expert, but I've done this before and am doing this now.....also there are others that will let you have regular completly difference domains , just put in a support ticket where ever you have it hosted.....

    Hopes this helps??? BostonDave

That is the way it works. The add on domains is only a selling point
because a lot of hosting plans only let you use one domain or a
limited number. You do still have to register them first.

It would be a bit of chaos if anybody could add on anything they
wanted without registering it, like cnn.com etc.

Wow, what a lot of information. Kristi and Dave thank you for your help. I have actually seen that video before and read the report but I think my old brain doesn't always take everything in. I am no technical genius and get very confused sometimes when faced with something new.

My other domains work fine and I have several sub-domains with them but add-on domains had me boxed. I think I have it now thanks to you guys. Wonderful stuff and I hope this thread helps others.

    God bless

  • For me I have used Hostgator and they were ok to me. I have never used
add-on domains yet but I will be soon

I would personally use kiosk.ws for hosting because they understand internet
    marketers needs online.

But Hostgator is a good host
