What would you build if you had IM and programming skills?

I notice a lot of IM advice here is directed towards either beginners or have developed an online marketing skillset.

I've spent 10 years+ building websites of all different types - pretty much anything I see I'd know how to go about doing it (not saying I'd have the time - but in theory).

Sometimes when learning IM I feel I'm neglecting these skills and if I could somehow combine what I've learnt in IM and my programming skills I'd be on to a winner.

Any ideas? Any guides for coders getting into IM? Any WSOs for developers?

    Maybe you could:
    1. Find out the problem that you hate the most, and many people have same problem also...
    2. Research about how big the market that has the problem
    3. Find out the solution for the problem
    4. Build the solution of the problem. The solution could be Website, WP Plugin, Software, etc
    5. Use your IM knowledge to promote "the solution"

I think a lot of people approach this simple steps, and build a multi-million business.

Yeah I've been thinking about doing keyword solution more so around software or an app i could build instead.

Love to hear some experiences from folks who are actively doing this!

With programming skills, you are so far ahead of the game because you don't have to spend money on programmers. IMHO, anyway. :-) (And I've heard it from a lot of people in IM...)

My interest was in weight loss and fitness, so I built a weight loss related site with tons of tools, etc.

My advice would be to pursue something that you're interested in -- because you're going to be working at it all hours -- and turn it into a *business*.

I coded for many years starting out. Learned html way before anyone knew what the term was, learned php as soon as it came out. I DON'T LIKE TO CODE ANY LONGER! I do code but only to straighten out things. I use wordpress now and all the plugins that come with it. I would not even think anyone would want to do any differently except that there used to it. Yes you can code exactly how you want it to look, but you can use wordpress and compromise. Fast reliable and cheap. Time is money and I'm not cheap.

I agree so much can be done in Wordpress today. I look at all the things you can get a plugin for now and think how much we have available today compared to years ago.

What the average person can get for really shelling out peanuts is truly amazing.

However - I'd like to keep the thread on topic and talk about leveraging coding and IM skills. Obviously it's possible to succeed without coding skills - I'm just wondering if there is anyway I can make use of something I spent years learning!

I would say develop an awesome theme for squeze/sales pages. Something like an Optimizepress theme but with way more creativity and flexibility... and easier to use.

A few design gurus develop some great looking pages but it can be quite costly. Maybe a theme with the same level of quality for a lot less.

I would build an MLM affiliate tracking and payment management system that uses it's own database and logic that easily integrated with Wordpress and allows new members to instantly become affiliates when they become members that allows for a popup video explaining the benefits of promoting the site through social media to encourage members to become active affiliates.

As part of the companies offerings for its site licenses, I would offer tech support to shard both the WP and management database, and I would make sure the affiliate database automatically backed up to a second server as part of the original package, and provide a service that allowed for easy load balancing of any site using your backend.

I would offer detailed instructions in both writing and videos of how to load balance, and provide a WP plugin that made provisioning of multiple web servers and multiple databases easy.

I think clearly the backend management software should also ease this process.

Most people are marketing to niches, create a system that allows and eases mass viral marketing and monetizes viral marketing and you have an industry changer potentially.

Hmm, definitely some interesting ideas there. I really think Wordpress plug-ins are an interesting opportunity.

One of the issues I think a lot about is how to work out what people are after. When we do SEO research we have Google keyword tools, etc. But when it comes to taking a guess of what to build as a WP plug-in, I feel like I am throwing a dart with a blindfold on.

I guess I could use some keyword analysis to see what people are searching for as far as plug-ins go as well.

    Hey LocoDice,

When you can write your own scripts and have the resources to spend time developing these things the possibilities are endless. Just recently I have been producing a number of data analysis tools in rails that scrape various datasets and spot emerging trends and patterns.

Using an example of a system that we don't actively maintain anymore - I wrote a clickbank tool that grabs the datafeed every morning, stores it and then runs some algorithms to pull out any programs that it thinks that we have a good chance of success with.

When you can program and know IM then it allows you to have such a depth of knowledge that it really is like having an advantage over 90% of others.

Yes I guess we won't see a WSO pitched at coders as it really would be only a smaller % of the audience that are developers, and you want to go after the numbers for something like a WSO.

Wish I could find some formulas though for 'micro-startup' cash focused businesses. You look at startups like fiverrr, etc and they are killing it! (I'd say they are far away from a micro-startup by now though).

if i was good enough i would create a tool which you can plug in to your site somehow and when ever you make a sale though amazon, clickbank, warriorplus, adsense, commission junction, ebay or any other affiliate program

i would love to be able to make a tool that tells you the "exact keyword" that the buyer came from

kind of like some of the tracking softwares but instead making it work with search engines and keywords

    that would be awsome

but im pretty sure it would not be that easy

    Hey Paul,

I've thought of this before, unfortunately not a lot of CPA deals give you real time tracking information for a successful sale. It's very difficult to marry up the actual visitor who purchased something with the actual order. Would be great to do something like that though!

I have to agree with what others have said. You have a serious advantage with your experience and abilities. There have been many great ideas posted.
I love the big picture ideas, the ones with huge potential, but they're going to be very hard to set up. Why not start with the smaller ideas and just build on them? Scale up to make one huge membership site, and you've got a one way ticket to awesome success. I know there can be times where you feel stuck, but most people here wish they had your expertise and experience.

Good idea. You could get the keyword they came from via their referer, then use a unique sub id when they are clicking through to the merchant/offer(saving the kw info and sub id in a DB). Once you get a postback of a sale/conversion then you can look at the sub id and check which keywords they came from. Or even just use the keyword itself as the sub id and just store those as they come in from postbacks.

For starters, here's an idea. How about teaming up with a good copywriter in your area? You'll then have (ideally):
    • Skills to build and manage a website
    • A good writer to create good content
    • A writer who understands marketing and selling to influence conversions/sales
    • Marketing/Coding talent merging to create a solid SEO strategy
Then, you'd just have to figure out what to sell and get to work!

I guess I am really looking for formulas that take tech skills into account. I see lots of these in the form of WSO's, etc but of course they often take the approach that people with basic it/internet skills can do them.

I spend a good chunk of my week moving forward on my ideas that leverage my coding skills in a marketing context, and each week I learn things that work and (mostly) don't work. It would be great to learn from other peoples successes and failures in this space.

I love coding, I just want to be as effective as possible in what I do when I build my own apps, websites, plug-ins, etc from a marketing perspective.

I guess I am also talking about going after 'micro-startup' concepts, a small version of what is today recognised as a startup run by just me and maybe a few VA's.

There are plenty of guys doing this - I see it in the appspace. Developers who are hot with objective C, etc who get out there and make apps that hit a nerve with the market and start seeing the cash roll in each month.

Just trying to see if there is anybody on the WarriorForum that know the kind of things I'm talking about and if I can find any more useful tips to sharpen my strategy!

    Hey Guys,

After quite a bit of research I feel I made quite a bit of progress today in a few things I discovered.

Basically I learnt two new terms 'micropreneur' and 'mico-isv'

Have a look at the following:
Micro ISV - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lessons Learned by a Solo Entrepreneur | Software by Rob
The Micropreneur Academy - Startups For the Rest of Us...
    http://changethis.com/manifesto/80.0...rManifesto.pdf

As a developer and somebody really interested in leveraging my skills, this is truly exciting for me.

For the crossover with IM I really like this from the Micropreneur Manifesto (link above)

#11 | Become a Black Belt Internet Marketer
Cold calling doesn’t scale. In-person selling is too labor intensive. Direct mail is too expensive.
You’re one person, which means you have to be everywhere at all times. You have to be the visionary,
the technician, the marketer, and the manager.
Becoming proficient at online marketing is the best thing you can do for your business now,
and for every business you start for the rest of your life. It’s a skill that translates to any business.
    Any subject matter. Any niche.
    And it scales insanely well.

Hope this helps anybody who has read this thread!

this answer is very simple, start programming company.

Since you actually know how to program, I would find a few good programmer based off your own personal experience, then use your IM skills to keep them busy.

Decide what type of stuff you are going to program, and build a a business around that, your time should be spent doing the IM and making sure the programmer stay busy and do a good job.

I guess if you're pretty good with programming and you already have lots of experience making websites then one of the best options would probably be to build a website for a specific application or group of applications of the same genre at least. If your app is interesting, needed and useful enough then it will attract a lot of consumer traffic. Of course, where there is a lot of potential customers there will also be a lot of marketers there to take a piece of the pie. So then you can sell some ad spaces and other advertising stuff you can come up with your site and then the marketing goes on. Just make sure to update your apps regularly and listen to user demands to be able to correct issues. Keeping the apps in the site running smoothly is the recipe for your IM success so do it well. Just a suggestion. :-)

    Good Luck!

By the way, many people have already done this strategy so maybe find a new way to spice it up a bit to be ahead of the competition.

Well I wish I had good programming skills, but I don't. It's all a learning curve when I do.

What I need is a program that will scan my received email headers for from name, subject, from email and IP address and throw it in a spread sheet.

I hate having to dig through a ton of headers to dig up the IP address.

If there is a program out there that does this, clue me in.
