The IRS is Subscribed To My Email List...

Ok, so here is the thing...

Today I was thinking to myself and I was wondering which email service the majority of my email list are using. And what I found was kind of weird and wanted to know if anybody else has the same thing in their email lists.

What I found was that two of my subscribers where using a .gov extension.

Freaked me out when I first saw it, one .gov subscriber is from South Africa and the other one is .irs.gov, which really FREAKED me out.

So does anybody else have the IRS subscribed to their list?

Mark

The IRS has thousands of workers...many who I am sure, use their email address for other than work purposes. Or, it could be a fake email address, something that a customer of yours just entered to sign up. It could be as simple as that.

I doubt if the IRS were investigating you, that they would use an IRS email address...but, that's just my guess.

99% chance it's nothing to worry about...and if you are running your business as you should, it's nothing to worry about even if they are investigating you. Don't sweat it.

So? Are you making income claims that aren't reflected in your tax returns? Are you offering tax advice? If neither, why do you care if someone from the IRS is subscribed? Could just be someone interested in your topic.

Of course, it's possible that was the return address in a spam, which is pretty common. If you're using simple opt-in (no confirmation required), that's most likely the source of the subscription.

Yeah don't get paranoid, or should you? I would not think an IRS worker would subscribe under a .gov name but the U.S. does have alot of stupid people in congress so you never know.

I bet ya that it's so poor overworked IRS agent that is looking to get into internet marketing lol. Well if that's what your list is about.

Anyways, I wouldn't put anyones email out there like you did, just for privacy reasons - specially a government official. =D

Seriously. While it was probably innocent at the outset... you just pissed off an IRS employee, and that can NEVER end well. At least not good for you.

Did you just violate your privacy policy by publicly posting their email address?

It's pretty funny until someone releases a can of a** kicking in court.

I'm not directing this to the OP but I've known people that have gotten into trouble for such things.

Anyways, who reads the WF? Just 3 or 4 chums.

Interesting...I doubt if that is anything to worry about.

However, what if a marketer has a real IRS employee on his list...
In the sales letters to subscribers one claims to make $129,000 from IM
But on the the IRS return only $29,000 is declared.

I wonder what would happen if the IRS employee who is on the email list coincidentally lands on the return.

At which point you can either say "Yup, I made 129,000" and pay a lot of taxes... or you can say "It was just marketing" and watch the IRS hand your sworn statements over to the FTC and FBI.

Of course, if you both promote accurate information AND pay all your taxes, you have absolutely nothing to worry about.

Well except for the cost of legal representation during the audit.

    1. I don't think you should be publishing someones email address online like that regardless of what your privacy policy states or what your concerns are. For all you know this is just a regular person like anyone else on your list so I'm not sure why you feel it ok to share their email address on a forum with hundreds of thousands of members?

    2. You seem a little 'over the top' paranoid for someone who is not doing anything wrong. Maybe you do have something to hide ? Regardless of that, if the IRS were 'spying' on you do you think they would really use IRS in their email address? The FBI are the only people stupid enough to wear their name on their tshirts.

Have they purchased any of your products or services using that email address?

If this is really bothering you, I'd start there and see if they have actually purchased anything and if they have possibly requested a refund or had any questions or complaints.

Other than that...I wouldn't stress about it. Maybe that's their only email address and their employer is not critical about the kind of email coming in as long as it's nothing illegal.
