If you need to outsource, where do you go?

Hey everyone,

I have heard about elance, guru, odesk, rentacoder, and even outsourcing to the Phillipines (Agents of Value)...

From your experiences, which one of these sites do you recommend?

(I'm mainly looking at website development, design, SEO)

Thanks,

Justin

What do you do if you can't find anyone in the Warrior Forum?

And, people seem to be frequently burnt here, without the ability to give negative feedback, like on sites such as Rentacoder, where you get to rate the seller?

Unless I missed a new feature that allows sellers to be rated here?

Agree with all above, definitely the WF, or Digital Point if you are looking for a different talent pool.

It really doesn't get any easier or cheaper.

I've used Elance in the past. May again in the future. But, it's typically a mixed bag.

For my latest project, I used Twitter.

I have been using getafreelancer for some article writings, this is in addition to my regular writer but you have to be careful. The cheapest ones are usually a mistake. I am currently using two virtual assistants from the Philippines and they're really very good especially in the link building services.

I've had such bad results from outsourcing that I refuse to do it without a close look at the vendor's work and/or references. I admit that I'm a little "gun shy" from a few bad experiences. However, rather than go for the least cost or cheapest resource, I now start off by looking for talent available in my local area and/or for individuals who come recommended from some other trusted source.

I haven't had the need yet, but now, if I had to, I would use WF. If not, I'd opt for rent-a-coder. For articles......I'd use the best place, and that is the site I still write for. I'm too new on here to post a link to it, and before anyone asks, no I'm not linked in any way at all. In fact, I have my own site which I've just started so you could always take a look at that if you wish....lol

On a more serious note, Gaf and some of the others just seem a bit like it's "luck of the draw", and even more so with writing work.

I've used elance - two of the people turned out to be great, two didn't.

I've gotten sales pages and a Twitter background done by Ryan Leisure, who I found on here. Excellent stuff.

I'm testing out odesk right now.

Outsourcing is like any other kind of hiring - you're going to find some good talented people and some not so good. You will probably have to go through a few people for each good person that you find - so when you find that good one - be nice to them, tell them you appreciate them, and give them a bonus at the end of a job well done, so you can keep them around!

You're crazy going anywhere else besides the Philippines for outsourcing. The whole country are amazing people. Smart, loyal, educated, hard working, honest, ...

@ecdavis - my guess is that you had a bad experience outsourcing because you went elsewhere for your outsourcing (probably...India???).

      John,

India is also full of smart, loyal, educated, hard working, honest, dedicated people. I agree with your generalization about the Philippines as I have, in the past, worked alongside of Philippine nationals. However, it does not follow from the generalization that without proper due diligence you won't get reamed up that dark, moonless, back passage. My misadventures occured with British, American, and Indian outsourcers and occured because I was not careful enough in researching my sources. As a result, I will not outsource without vetting and references of some sort. I also no longer base my choice on cost alone. I would say that quality of work, quality of personality, quality of communication, ability to think and work with an idea, and ability to keep deadlines and commitments rank well above cost.

        Hi Guys,

WF is great in my experience. However I have not had any reason to look in the Philippines, but would be keen to do the due diligence on some of the players in the Philippines. Is there a particular area in the Philippines where a large amount of this talent can be found (outside Manila)? Any suggestions on where to start looking?

        Cheers......thanks,

Wow, paying people in the Philippines is turning out to be a pain. One person asked to be paid by Western Union; I checked; they charge $20. Xoom, as I mentioned, charges $3.50. I like Paypal, but a lot of people in the Philippines don't because it takes Paypal 5 to 6 days to give them their money.

      Dana,
This is something that I can't work out either. I've recently been looking in the philippines and as you say the methods to pay outsourcers there appear difficult or limited at best.

I have used elance with good results in the beginning, but not so much later on. The best strategy is to hire local talent at your nearby community college. You get to know the person and in a worst case scenario can take them to small claims court.

Paying good money for content and then finding out it was "cut and pasted" off another website is a bitter experience. Also the same thing happens with code. You get what you pay for.

I've used Elance and Getafreelancer for all my outsource work so far. So far I would have to say that GAF has provided me with the best quality of workers. I don't know if it was just bad luck or bad judgement on my part (probably the later) but people on elance that i've used would say "yeah I can do that" and then when it come down to it they just didn't deliver what I needed.

I've had many successful projects on GAF and you seem to get a lot more bids very quickly. My latest freelancer from GAF is from eastern Europe and she's top quality, $10/hr for graphics design, web design, video editing, wordpress.

I've never really thought of using this forum but after reading this post I'll give it a shot.

With all my respect to fellow warriors here (and I don't have much experience with outsourcing to the warriors) and based on my personal experience I highly recommend rentacoder.
However, whether you choose to outsource here or at any other place, I'd like to tell you that so many times problems occur when you outsource your work to the wrong person.

What I mean is, an important factor to successful outsourcing involves "giving the right job to the right person". Your choice of coder is very very important. You need to check their profile, resume, rating etc.. before you give your work away. You are employing someone to help you with your business.

I have posted projects at rentacoder in the following areas:
web design, new software, market research, video, audio , ghost writing including articles, ebooks and even poetry. The result.. I ended up with a wonderful Master Mind Team.
If you asking about the price then I will tell you: "You wont find a better value for your money". I hope this was helpful.

      Best Regards,
      Lama Kalla

Guys, it's not just about where you outsource, but HOW you outsource.

You can get talent or you can get burned no matter where you outsource.

Ultimately, it comes down to knowing *exactly* what you are looking for and being able to communicate that VERY well to your new team member (or "outsourcer").

Check out their feedback ratings and ask for samples of their work.

Ask them to perform a small test for you. A "miniature" of your project. For example, if you want a 100-page book written, ask them to write an article. The test alone will filter out almost 90% of the "candidates." This is a great way to see who is hard-working, eager to please and able to follow simple instructions - and who ain't.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[545540].message }}
  • Profile picture of the author Ian Harmon
A good tip is in your job description specify that they PM you with their response. This gives you a good indication of how well they follow instructions and is a great way of creating a quick shortlist.

I have been burned by elance too many times to recommend it, and unfortunately I'm too new to the forums here to give feedback, (although people seem pretty awesome so far!)

Honestly, I prefer dealing locally, (something about meeting someone face-to-face when they're dealing with my business just works for me.) so I'll either go to Craigslist, or Biznik.com and find folks.

Rentacoder [Vworker] has very talented people, but then there is a lot of talent here on this very forum as well. It really depends on the types of tasks you want done. If you want SEO work done, WF is not bad at all. For website development, you can find good workers on Vworker. I'd definitely check their site out since they have good features in place, which give a greater chance of quality end products. I hope this helps!

IMO, the "best" outsourcing service is the one that provides a platform that complements your goals. And the smartest way to determine a complementary platform is to check a site's terms of service, available management tools, payment systems, security checks, contracts, etc. Like YasirYar, I like vWorker. A little comparison shopping shows that vWorker stands out from the rest considering the above issues. You're going to have to do a little research to find the best fit for what you need to accomplish.
