A Free Solo Mailing To 150,000

I suddenly find myself in a somewhat enviable position.

I just won a free solo mailing to a list of 150,000
in the personal development niche.

That's one of many niches I'm in, but not really my
main one... yet.

I do see this as a tremendous opportunity, so I don't
want to screw it up. I do realize that I'm probably
better off sending them to a squeeze page, and offering
them a freebie so that I can build a list, build a
relationship with them, and gradually market to them.

Anyway, how would YOU use this opportunity if you had
it?

What would you offer them?

Willie

I could direct them to a squeeze page to make a buyer's list of those and then if i had a product, i would direct them to a sales page to make some money.

Congratulations, couldn't have been won by a nicer guy.

Don't give them a "freebie" so much as a set of free lessons, so that they will actually look forward to your coming emails and open them.

I think Rosie Cottis, a fellow warrior who owns the Flamillion stuff just put out a pack of PLR articles on overcoming guilt and anxiety for like 10 bucks or something. Not sure where the link is, but I'm on her email list and I'm sure you can find her.

Of course, knowing you, you've probably already got some great stuff written up and a plan in place for that, so I reiterate my 2 cents: Don't give a single freebie, but rather a series of 7 or 10 lessons or whatever.

Oh, and keep it low key... Or at least hype-free. Introspective people tend to be "Thinkers" and are not impressed with too much hype or whether or not you are the greatest thing since marketing began. In my experience their #1 Hot buttons are "Teach me more" and "Best future results"

Best of luck, let us know how it works out!

I do have lots of stuff, but want to make sure it's something that would
      resonate with them.

I won it by sending the most JV partners over the a
self-improvement giveaway that just kicked off. The
phase where new JV partners get their gifts in just
ended and I got the prize for recruiting the most.

I would make the list owner send to a squeeze page for a live telecall.

That way you'll get some of the best subscribers from the list.

Just be sure to test and tweak the squeeze page before the solo ad goes out

      I hadn't consider a live teleclass... I guess because I think
of that as "selling" since my webinars all offer products

I like the idea though, and would just need to find the perfect
      personal development product.

Lol the only thing I'm a master of is the basics I've learned from marketing veterans like you.

But I do happen to have insider knowledge about telecall leads being some of the best you can get when squeezing new subscribers.

I guess it's because people who attend live tele calls and webinars are the most serious.

    Hello Willie,

You are in a very enviable position, indeed. I believe that we may be opposites when it comes to IM experience, and it sounds as if there is little I can offer that you have not already heard or do not already know. However, I will answer from the perspective of how I would use the opportunity....

I would start by attempting to establish a relationship with the new list as my initial encounter. I would tell them a little about what I have achieved, what my goals are, and how I may be able to help them in their personal development journey. I read somewhere that engaging your list should be treated in the same fashion as if you were courting a romantic interest. So, as Mike mentioned, providing something (information, lessons, or even an "instructional" freebie) that represents a little of what you have to offer may be the best course of action in the beginning of the "relationship". You don't want to come on so strong with immediate sales that you scare them away, and you don't want them to lose interest by neglecting them either. Again, I'm certain you are quite familiar with all of this!

I guess romancing your list is all about establishing trust in who you are and the value you bring to the table. Anyway, thanks for allowing me to indulge in the possibility of having won such a prize!

    Enjoy....

    Wilton

Thanks Wilton. To be clear, I get the existing list owner(s) to
send one mailing for me to their list.

So, in that mailing I want to get as many of those people as
practical onto my list so that I can do exactly what you
described. So, in that first contact, I need to essentially
sell them on joining my list... in one fashion or another.

Alternatively, I could just use the opportunity to promote
something, but I think that would be short-sighted.

I also should add that if I can write something in the voice
of the list owner... or even get the list owner to write
it for me, it might convert better.

A lot of people, given this opportunity, would blow it...
and while I wouldn't totally blow it, I'm trying to make
even fewer mistakes... and give my fellow Warriors food
for thought at the same time.

    Willie,

The first thing I'd do is ask the list owner to explain...

    1. Describe the one subscriber who is most representative
    of the entire list

    2. Explain how/when/where they signed up to the list and
    what their expectations are.

    3. Copies of the last three emails they received.

Then I'd decide what the best approach would be. However,
if you can't get that info... What Jason said... Send to a
    Webinar registration page.

    John

Being personal development niche which is a great opportunity for you. I would find and do my research on those keywords and find the keywords for that niche that matter the most. I would think have my writers write an ebook. If I want to make a good impression I usually make it about 30,000 words or more. Costly yes, but whats that email worth to you.

Now I would have to think about it. Give them one good chapter and use the rest for the autoresponder or give it all at first and deal with the autoresponders on a different list.

Its January so people are still with there resolutions how about personal development goals or something in that range.

    Congradulations also.

Not a bad idea since Level 5 is all about personal development,
and harnessing the law of attraction.

The tricky part would be getting them on my list, so that I could
build a relationship with them, AND getting them to register for
the Level 5 webinar. I don't like making them register twice
but that may be what I would need to do, so that they know
that.. in that case, they would be on my list, as well as in
the Level 5 system, where they could get follow up emails.

      Thanks,

I would as mentioned above speak to the list owner and ask them what sort of email offer or subject gets the most opens and what offers their list prefer. I would create a email based on the feedback given by the list owner and send them to a squeeze page.
The first email they received would be to welcome them and explain what they can expect from me with a free bonus gift. When they go for the 2nd free bonus there will be a OTO at a silly low price just to begin building a buyer list.

You may want to send them to a facebook fan page and get them to LIKE that page.

This is pretty much the same as getting their email only it is easier to do and you get very detailed dempgraphics.

But make sure the page you send them to has at least 1k likes already to make it look professional

I think because of your reputation Willie it would not hurt to be honest and say just how you got to contact them. Then after introducing yourself you could offer to help them by sharing information in the future.
Your emails are like products anyway and those that did opt in to receive them would surely value subscribers.
I would also create a separate list for these subscribers and give a % of profit to a chosen charity.

Also well done for winning the prize in the first place.

Wille, tell ya what. I'll buy you dinner and we can discuss it. I think it's my turn to pay anyway

I have a self improvement blog I won't name here that I would love to get traffic to. So if I had that mailing opportunity I would send people to a free offer and use it to build relationships with the new people who subscribe to it and do everything I could to help them master the challenges they face. That's my vote. Not just sell a product, but build lifetime relationships.

Last year I posted about his book here, explaining how he has been diagnosed with a rare type of cancer and then he decided to apply and document his own teaching to his situation.

I don't know if this is the best plan ever - but it would make me feel good knowing I'd help him and those 150,000 in the same time. (yes, there would be a cut for me, too, I think that's obvious)

John's list of questions is a good list, Willie. The personal development field goes into so many realms - physical, spiritual, vocational, etc. that you really do want to find out what niches in the personal development field the subscribers are going to respond to most strongly.

One thing I can say without much research necessary is that it's an awesome time of year to win this one. The first of the year has most people focused on changing, dropping bad habits and incorporating new techniques to make life better for them.

Congratulations on the "win". Slightly jealous.

I agree with you and John on those points. I have sent solos to
lists as large as 860,000 where the lists were too broad, and
was always disappointed with the results.

I love this time of the year, and people making so many changes
or resolutions IS why I'm building lists in some of those niches.

I am studying what's selling best in those niches... looking at
what's hot on Amazon for example.

I agree with Sal. The personal development field is super broad and means nothing as such because there are so many niches and sub niches within personal development that it is literally impossible to offer a single product that would be relevant to the list (assuming they all subscribed to "personal development").

On the other hand, if they are subscribers on a specific niche or sub niche, then it makes things a lot easier.

Ask the list owner what sort of offer or subject gets the most conversions for them. Create a free 3-5 lesson offer, then squeeze page them.
First email would welcome them and explain what they can expect and have a link to a video where you ask them to tell you what they are most interested in or what they would like to learn more about.
Offer a free bonus gift for answering a short survey or questionaire.... Maybe a survey form on a fb fanpage behind a fangate?
Then offer a related OTO on the free bonus download page to build the buyer list.

A survey is another great idea, and could even all me to
segment the list, funneling them to different autoresponders
based upon their survey choices. There are numerous scripts
      that would automate that process.

I'd want as many of those people as I could get on my list. Even with a small response, out of 150K you'd get a big list.

So what I would do, is offer a FREE high-value membership that is relevant to that list and I would just set it up in aweber and have the lessens emailed once per day for 7 lessons which leads them to a page with the lessons on.

Then hold a free webinar at the end with a guru in the niche and offer something great for a great deal so you look like "the man". - Good luck

I would do exactly what you stated. You want to capture them to your own list so that they are yours for future marketing and building of a relationship with.

However, I would just offer them any old freebie. If I were you, if it is a quality list, which I assume it it, it would have to be something better than the usual ebook or videos and something almost all of them would really want.

People love evaluations and free help. Maybe you could offer them a questionaire they fill out.

I totally believe in offering only high quality gifts and often create

    Congratulations on winning!
I actually was one of the many JV partners you signed up!

But, I think you are better off by sending them to a squeeze page. Why send to 100% once, when you could send to, hopefully 25%, over 20 times? Besides the people that want the freebie are probably more likely to buy a product in the future then those who don't want the freebie.

But then again you are much more experienced in this then I am so do whatever you think is best.

I like the idea of a teleseminar if you can JV with a well known motivational person on the internet circuit who may already have a campaign going. You could provide an additional stop just like on a concert tour.

I would give them my best article, written specific for that purpose, and lead them to a squeeze page where I would offer them a gift to join my list.

Hey, wait, that isn't very original! However, my gift would be. It could be a free hypnosis MP3 that gets them to relax and gain self confidence. Or a free video. I would definitely aim at either video or audio to gain further trust and rapport with them.

If I was in your position I would go find a reputable copywriter and then let him look at the highest open rate messages of the owner list to get a feel for his style. The copywriter would be able to write a sizzling headline and a call to action to get your free 7 day series of personal development.

Have the copywriter do your squeeze page writing and you give a quick version of your story in video. All you have to do is create the first piece of content so its ready and create a video a day. I watched the video at the beach and found a lot of useful information inside. You have a ton of content inside of you.

All of your success is proof that you are practicing in self development. Bob proctor would be a good guy to contact in getting a special deal or added on bonus for a self improvement product. He has a telewebinar in place. He has been practicing in self development for the last 50+ years. That is my 2 cents. Congratulations on your win. You deserve it. You have a lot of great content.

Yes, I've helped to launch several major self development products,
and have worked projects that Bob was involved in for years. I even
did SEO on one of his sites back in 2002

I'm already looking at doing JV's with Bob's people, and several others.

I think in 2012, people think the mayans had it right. The world will not end, we will just change as people, as society and and our thinking and thought will totally develop to a new level.

So with this in toe, what do you think it will do to the self help and self development, and such niches. They will increase and lots of money will be made there in the next several years I belive. Just a guess really.

2012 will be the dying of old ways, and new thinking, not the end of the world. See there will be lots of opportunities in these areas coming.

Once the economy in Europe and US totally crashes, and collapses, because it will .... this is going to change eveything, shifts in how we do business, why we do business and how we accept money, use money......especially when the US gets a new currency, because that is what I am being told is coming. Lots of changes coming to our economy, and that will change the way people are going to think about themselves, about their world and others. So forget that, just ask yourself how the heck can I make money from this. Simple get in the niches that cater to this, before all these changes come.

Changes can be scary, a new currency also will rattle peoples mind, but forget about that, just think about how you can make money from all of these changes. We are on the cusp of the most lucrative time as marketers, when these changes do come. Do not be scared be excited for the endless amount of opportunities that are out there....especially now....as you have time to prepare and jump infront of the money train.

I believe that the would is already in the middle of "an awakening"
and our knowledge level of many things, including spiritual things,
how energy works, etc., will accelerate.

That is going to cause a major shift in many things and I am
positioning in front of part of that shift

    first of all willie.

sounds good. But 150,000 this list might be as good as a list of about 100 people, if there is no relationship being built. If there is no trust, and the emails are simply ghosted and have been spammed too.

That will mean you will get hardly any clicks, and with solo ads, clicks mean everything.

But if there is a relationship been built..then you have solid gold.

If this is what they say it is, and you are going to get some good results...I would offer them something with a good sales page, or someones coaching, that is what does well in that niche.

But realistically you are waisting that opportunity, I would send them to an nicely converting optin page (tested first of course) and then you can market to them over and over again ...err.... winning! as our friend charlie mad dog machine SHEEN would say

Good luck willie, I hope it goes well for you.

Send them to a sales page with a main offer and a couple of backends. Make sure there is an exit pop-up script on your sales page that leads them to your landing page if they don't buy. Just my two cents...

I think that I'll get a better return-on-investment over the longterm
if I don't try to sell them anything at first.

It's a niche where they typically respond better if you aren't that
      aggressive with them.

      Willie
      Hey Willie,

Personally I think a survey is the best way to do it.

Have free a product for each niche. Self Help is a broad market- many sub niches. Find out what people are interested in the most on that list (and also the most popular sub niches within self development community).

Then create survey paths for each niche and let the person receive 1 free gift for taking the survey and you will have a segmented list. And you will have data on them as well.

You could also offer a OTO after the free gift as well as do "tell a friend".

Or another idea... you can have 2/3 different links in the solo ad.

1 link can go to a survey for the prospect to take and receive a "special" bonus.

Another link can go direct to a squeeze page.

Or a page similar to an "offer wall" in CPA Marketing. An offer wall has multiple banners on it for different offers so the person just clicks which offer they are most interested in. Yours can be more personal and better targeted, but allowing the person to choose what they want instead of having a 1 size fits all is the way to go.

Some people may not want to do a survey.. so if you have 2 different links going to 2 different pages it may be better.

We don't know much about the list at this point, but I think just sending 1 offer/squeeze page to a broad list like that you will alienate other prospects on that list that are interested in something else.

Do a survey/offer wall and capture more leads.

Be sure to update us let us know what approach you took and how it went.

      Good Luck

    in the personal development niche.

    Willie
I'd have TWO things on the landing page:

    1. A freebie they can download WITHOUT an opt-in

    2. An even juicier freebie they can get for opting-in
to your list - maybe a bundle of infoproducts that
you could get others to contribute

This way, you're giving everyone who comes to your page
something of value - which, of course, will have other
ways to begin a relationship or sell stuff embedded in
    it.

And by JV'ing with others in the self-help niche and
giving THEM exposure to your visitors, nurturing a
reciprocity that'll help when you build up your self-
help business in the near future.

    Win - Win - WIN.

The kind of deals I like putting together - and you do
    too, Willie

    Hope this helps.

    All success
    Dr.Mani

P.S. - I'd also set up the page to 'go viral' with
social share buttons (maybe incentivized using a
    tool like CloudFlood.com

I would do exactly that... even though it's the boring thing to do. But at least you know that this boring thing is proven to work and make money for you.

Will the solo mailing endorse you like a JV partner? Or will it be a mass mailing to a group of people who have no idea of who you are? If the latter is the case, i think sending them to a pitch page would be futile. Generate the lead.

    Thats Good ... Congrats .

if you were me .. i would send them to a squeeze page .. because most of the marketers do this wrong .. send send the subscribers directly to the product and lose the subscriber once and for all ..

This opportunity is perfect for it .. If you send the visitor directly to the site .. you are gonna be able to reap this benefit only for once .. Or if you are gonna send them to a squeeze they are your subscribers forever ..

So what would you like for once or forever ...

    Good luck mate.

I would contact 5 experts most people into personal development would recognize and offer a Free Special Live 5 hour teleseminar marathon. I would also enhance the offer to include the digital recordings and transcripts for free to the first 1,100 people who sign up. I would also increase the value of the offer even more by also offering a chance to win one of your experts best courses on personal development... Do the draws, one every hour.

I believe this would instantly get a lot of people to sign up and be on that call.

Then a few days later I would send an email to the list and say "If you missed the call then I would like to offer you the recordings and transcripts for FREE plus a special discount coupon for any one of the 5 experts courses That were on the call (insert affiliate link)." (Or something like that...)

Now if I were into personal development as a customer then I would feel like I hit the lottery with an offer like this. I'd be thinking.... "Imagine, on a call with 5 experts I recognize for 5 straight hours and a chance to win one of their full blown courses... plus I get the recordings and it's all for free...!"
