Favorite Domain Registrar?

Hi All,

Had a question pop in to my head, and thought for sure this would be the best way to gather some opinions. The thread title says it all: Which is your favorite domain registrar? And why?

I use GoDaddy, I like the ease of domain management there. What say the rest of you?

I use Namecheap. I read an article a couple of days ago that GoDaddy was putting some links in the footer of their customers and that's why they rank so high for very competitive keywords. I think it was only if you build a website with their website builder, but I think they should not do it.

I don't have the link to the article anymore, but I guess you can search for it on Google. Although it is not that big of a deal, I'd rather use Namecheap.

    Hope it helps.

      Why is their hosting garbage?

I've used JustHost and Netfirms. I really didn't care for Netfirms control panel - not user-friendly, not laid out in a way that made sense. JustHost is AWESOME in their control panel AND their customer service (which is really important), but the only drawback to JustHost is they don't keep their raw data access logs for more than one day, which is very strange. They can archive them, but even those aren't archived for much longer. This was a problem for me because I was using an SEO company (wasn't cheap!) and they needed the raw data for more detailed analytics. I had tried using Google Analytics, but for some reason my domain account kept disappearing. Very weird. Finally I just had to go back to Google Analytics, and it seems to be working now. It was a shame that JustHost didn't have that raw data for longer than a day because I still can't say exactly how effective that SEO company was.

However, aside from that one issue (which can be resolved by using Google Analytics), JustHost totally rocks. I can't say enough about their customer service, which is huge when you're a newbie like I was not so long ago.

I use GoDaddy. No real reason why, except that I started buying domains about 10 years ago and just stuck with them.

As mentioned above, the hosting is terrible, though. Think I lasted about 2 weeks with it, lol.

Yes, I've never gone near their hosting, but for changing nameservers and shuffling, forwarding, or reselling domains, I've always thought it was a pretty good setup.

Namecheap for most domains -the free first year Whois opt-out is useful.

Vidahost.co.uk for UK domains - they are a really nice outfit, so unlike the big boys.

GoDaddy I don't trust at all I wouldn't want them to having anything to do with a domain I valued, there have been so many horror stories over the years. I'd also add 1&1 to the ones to avoid, I managed to extricate myself from a horrific experience last year when they did everything possible to prevent me cancelling domain renewals and then chased me for payment - wish I'd read all the bad press they received before registering about 50 domains with them.

I use GoDaddy because most of our buyers use them - it's far more convenient to receive domains via a push than a transfer so we try to keep most of ours there.

Otherwise, if you have a lot of domains, Fabulous.com is great too with a wholesale account. NameCheap, Moniker and Name.com are all fine too.

Namecheap, with no regrets at all, here. I like the combination of interface, customer support and prices.

I've used only four registrars in total, though, over the last 3+ years, so I don't have huge experience from which to draw comparisons.

I've now transferred all my domains registered elsewhere to Namecheap, and am not looking for a fifth one.

The one I really intensely dislike, as a registrar, is GoDaddy. It's been a great relief and a pleasure to leave them behind, and I'm just slightly embarrassed that it took me a year longer to do that than it should have done.

I wouldn't even go back to GoDaddy for a $1 .info domain-name (the one product for which they're always cheaper than Namecheap). I'd honestly rather pay Namecheap $2.99. :p

I have used 1and1 for their domains, but I have never used their hosting. I use HostGator for hosting. But 1and1 has been real good with their domains. I have never had a problem with them. And the best thing about 1and1 is you can become an affiliate for them and they will pay you $2.50 for every domain that YOU purchase! So if you are paying full price of $9.99 for the domain and you purchase using your own affiliate link, you get the $2.50 off!

Not sure if they have changed practices, but back in 2008 i got a domain from them cause they had these really cheap prices. Big mistake. When I didn't renew one domain, got these nasty, threatening emails from them. Thank god my gf at the time was a lawyer and she drafted a nice email/letter to them and never heard from them again. But won't use them even if their domains are for 1.99.

    internetbs.net

Still have some domains with namecheap, but internetbs beats them in pricing every single time and they are just as good as namecheap.

Also, I like how internetbs sends you an email saying that they will increase prices and even with the increased prices, they got much lower prices than namecheap. That's why I switched to them to begin with....

I'm about to register my first domain and I'm wondering if there is much difference between different registrars? I know some offer free domain privacy like Namecheap for the first year, which is very appealing.

Otherwise, is there much difference between what they offer or is it just down to price?

I've found IX Web Hosting, which provides 3 free domain registrations when you buy their (Unlimited Pro) hosting for $7.95 per month, and they give you 15 dedicated IP's. There's also the secret link discount for 10% off.

Would IX be a good option for the domains, or is it better to get domains and hosting from separate providers?

I've never heard of IX but I prefer never to have all my eggs in one basket. I use Hostgator for my hosting (with namecheap as my registrar). Hostgator have excellent 24/7 support with live chat. They've never failed me (been with them for little over 2 years now).

I'm inclined to go with Namecheap because of the free whois protection. However I'm still unsure about who to use for hosting, so I might get one of the hosts that includes a free domain to help with setup costs.

1and1 seems to have a good deal also, $8.99 for domains, free private registration. Too many choices, makes this so confusing!!

Namecheap has been my top choice most of my domains. I have used a few others (and regretted it!!). Name Cheap's service is great and like some people in this thread have commented GoDaddy seem to market to you a bit to much for my liking. For Hosting I would not use them and I think it is always a good long term strategy to separate your domain registration provider and hosting provder i.e. different providers. I use Hostgator for all hosting and they are top notch IMO.

    Hello Fellow Warriors:

I implore you not to use GoDaddy.

    - They supported SOPA. 'Nuff Said

-The CEO uses your money to hunt elephants in Africa: http://cache.gizmodo.com/assets/imag...bcc8e11420.jpg We're talking endangered species.

-When people found out GoDaddy was a SOPA supporter, people left them in droves, so in response they interfered with the transfers to namescheap. GoDaddy Dickheads May Be Delaying Domain Transfers On Purpose (Updated)

    -And their commercials are sexist.

You may or may not care about GoDaddy being a moral company or not if you like to save a few bucks. I tend to avoid companies I think are jerks by voting with my dollars.

Hands down favorite would be Fabulous. Multi-level security including USB security keys, multi-user management etc.. Domain prices are pretty good too. Very straight forward interface, no upselling etc.. This is mainly a domainers registrar.

Moniker would be my second choice. Very good multi-level security as well. Not much upselling.

One of the worst I would have to say is GoDaddy. Their security sucks, quite a few accounts have been jacked in the past. They're also known to give up a domain easily in dispute. And the upselling on the way to checkout is akin to the street flyer guys waving porn pamplets in vegas.

But today, for example, someone wanted to buy one of my websites and I called their Tech Support and they not only gave me specific instructions on how transfer the domain, they told me how to list some of the domains I have for auction that I haven't used in a long time since they are .com. The tech support said someone sold a .com yesterday for $20,000 to a company that wanted it badly. Just goes to show you what Daniel Turner told me four years ago, .coms are never a waste of money and can one day be your gold mine.

I use Namecheap for domains and Westhost for hosting. Actually, I have a Westhost coupon code if anyone's interested, it stacks with my affiliate link and the referral I get is actually more than the cost of a year of hosting, so if anyone is looking for a year of free hosting, PM me. You can sign up with my link, and I'll cover the cost of your first year via PP (Hope this is okay, I just had that idea and it seems like a win-win for someone who needs hosting, and wants it for free.)

Anyways, I got SO tired of GoDaddy's upsells and their layout in general. I had my hosting and domains there. I still have my domains there, but I'm transfering them over gradually. I also want to try name.com, I've heard good things from them.

I used to pay 7.50 per domain at Godaddy, now at Namecheap it's $10+ but it feels worth it. Just a nicer experience overall.

I am using godaddy and think it is the best for domain maintenance. I like its payment system, auto renewal, dns control. Its search option is also different from others. When I search a domain, godaddy remember the history. I got my most favouriate domain by this way. Once I search the domain from my godaddy account, the domain was not available then. Many days later, I got a email from godaddy that the domain is now availble and I purchased then.
I also heard, domain purchased from godaddy is indexed by google more quickly than others.

I used to really like Internet.bs then I heard about them being the registrar for lots of illegal pharmacies. They're prices are great, but I don't feel right to use them, so I've switched to NameCheap.com

I have tried Namecheap, Godaddy and 1and1. My vote goes for Namecheap all the way.
