Site has disappeared from Google #1 spot?

I had site that was ranking #1 for the past month for a long tail keyword that gets heavy traffic daily by that exact keyword (about 100-150 impressions for that keyword). Tonight my site is not only ranking #1 no longer, but I can't find it in the first 30 pages. I had been building links gradually and so far has about 230+ backlinks. I haven't updated the site with new content for about a month now. It has about 10 articles. This is not a new site, but one that has been up for like 5 months now. Anyone know what might have happened?

    Hi mrtrance,

Sounds like you may have been experiencing the benefit of QDF (Query Deserves Freshness), and since you have not added new content, your page has dropped to it's true rankings without the "Freshness Factor".

Here is an article that discusses QDF with a Google engineer, and despite the fact that it's NY Times, I still think it is credible:

      Hello, mrtrance:

Could be a QDF issue as dburk has mentioned. But I have experienced something similar where a page on my site has been high on the first page rankings for many weeks, then suddenly disappeared out of site ... only to return to it's former first-page standing a day or two later.

I am still pretty much a SEO (search engine optimization) student, but my guess is it has something to do with the indexing that the search engines do. Something affects it for a few days, then it re-adjusts and gets back to "normal."

Keep an eye on your site over the next few days to see what happens. In the mean time, keep working on the three key SEO elements:

      - Keyword development
      - On Site optimization
      - Off Site optimization

Hi, my one of my site have the same experience. It's ranking for various keywords, but suddenly can be found at 100+, 200+, 300+ rankings.

Well, what can we do? Maybe, we can try to find some workarounds.lol

    mtrance.

Unfortunately, 5 months is still considerably new. Not to mention that having a backlink of 250 in just 5 months, could raise a red flag.

Try to put quality content to get natural links from respected sites.

This is a very common problem. I have had a few of my SEO clients upset about this happening, just to find out the next day or a few hours later they are happy again because their ranking is back. Many people don't realize this, but Google pulls it's results from several different data centers. You may see your ranking at the number 1 spot at one time and a few hours later it could be on page 2, or it could be down to position 5 on page 1. This is common for websites. If you still stay on the first page you have not much to worry about, but since you are dropping off I would focus on link building more and adding fresh content.

For example I have a client of mine that is on the first page for a very, very competitive keyword phrase. During the course of the week his ranking will range from position 3 to position 9 on the first page.

Just keep at it, and don't spam the search engines or panic. There are other ways to get traffic than just organic rankings. Look at video marketing and social bookmarking and press release submissions.

A couple of sites that I'm managing have dropped in PR over the past week. GRRRR! Both have been ranking very well for several years, and one has ranked very well even since before there was a Google.

I'm hoping it's just a shuffle, since the blogs and jobs pages (these are executive recruiting sites) are updated weekly.

This stuff still makes me whiny when it happens though.

It could be a Google dance thing and if just went down in ranking I wouldn't worry about it to much. If it stay down in ranking for a time then worry about it.
