WARNING - PHISHING of PayPal Accounts!!

by NickL
27 replies
I just got an email from PayPal stating that my account was being limited. Of course, having heard about this happening to others, I wanted to resolve it asap.

I quickly clicked the link, logged into PayPal and it took me directly to a page to go through their "Bank Account Verification" - which took me to my bank website's online account verification page (they knew which bank I use) but then *BING* hmmm... I wonder... So I called my bank and asked if they had such a url (verify.mybank.com.somotherstuff.com/abunchofstufftoconfuseyou). Nope!

Man! Their duplication of both PayPal's site and my bank site was AMAZING! Even when you mouse-over the links, you see paypal.com - but it is really paypal.com.029k01nzxuynip61.com/abunchofstuff -- same with the bank domain name.

Then I looked at the email address. The email was from PayPall.com - not PayPal.com! I notified my bank, changed all my passwords and am now scanning my machine for malware. After the scan, I will change my passwords again.

BE CAREFUL, fellow Warriors!!!!

Here is the text of the email I received (links removed):

    Thanks for the warning Nick.

These scams are showing up often then ever and people need to remind they should NEVER click any link in a email. What we need to do is go straight to the official website and check what's happening - if anything is really happening.

    Heads-up people!!

I got a real one today from Paypal.

One thing to note they don't include a link to paypal and just say login to your account and check the resolution centre..

Thank you Alex - I should have known not to click the link. They totally played on my fear (and anyone who runs a business using PayPal) of my account getting limited or shut down for some unknown reason. I though holy sh**! - I better do this quick! And then I clicked the link in my frustrated surprise.

      Never again!

** Whew! ** Narrowly avoided that one.... no malware has been found, by the way...

...do you guys think Ad-Aware Pro is good enough, or should I run something else as well?

        I recommend COMODO Internet Security.

Literally the best free antivirus you can find.

These phishing scams have gotten very slick. It used to be fairly easy to spot, but now the language and the graphics have gotten much better.

These Scammers take advantage of your good nature. Someone said you have a problem and you want to fix it immediately.

Never, ever click a link in in email...

Always go to the site directly and log in...

    Great advice!

I got two spammy emails this week one for limiting account and the second one update information.

    The email from : service@paypall.com

I never click on these links, if I doubt it is an actual email, I would actually go directly to paypal through direct link.

Never click on a link that comes through an email. You can loose your email with a single click.

You'll still get the same problem. Phishing can take place using any bank or payment processor as bait.

I hope that the op forwarded the phishing email to spoof [@] paypal.com preferably with the headers open. One should always try to do this when a new scam email relating to PayPal arrives.

      Just my thoughts,

      Jeff.

I never even open PayPal emails unless it's confirming a payment.

In fact I never open any bank emails anymore because I personally find it hard to tell what is and isn't legit. Is email marketing dead for financial institutions?

    Just kidding

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER!!!!!!!!! click links in emails that are connected with Paypal or any banking of any sort. Log in the proper way and you'll soon know if it's true or a fake.
If you check the paypal address, it is usually slightly wrong anyway but for heavens sake, don't be stupid and click links!!!!!!!!

I never click on any links in e-mails from Paypal or from a bank. Too many times you read about false e-mails. I always type out the url in the address bar. Glad you caught it in time!

If you use gmail, you can add a feature from the Labs where emails from paypal and ebay have a little symbol next to them if they are genuine.

Don't forget to forward those emails to "spoof@paypal.com" too. If they can track down the sender, they can make the scammer's life hell real fast.
