Can you submit articles to Associated Content like you can to EZA or most other directories? I thought it was just a place to write articles that they pay you for but then you don't keep rights to it.

Just looked through Allen's website website-articles.net, and I think there is a lot of good things going on there.

Having no ads on the page definitely makes the website a potentially strong competitor to the likes of Ezine Articles.

Search engines are moving quite quickly, and article directories are going to have to move equally quickly to keep up.

Which means that the article directories that will come out on top in 2009 are those that keep up.

I see ezine articles slipping over the next year, they are trying to take steps to provide a good user experience, but all the steps are technical ones focusing on details such as how many words you have in anchor text, and throwing out some of the worst standing pages. They are not looking at what I think are going to be the two most important criteria when it comes to a good user experience, firstly the look of the page the user is actually on, and secondly the content of the page the user is actually on.

Take a look at an average article page on ezine articles, the actual article seems to be a second thought, shoehorned in between the adverts and information about the website. The only things an article author can add to try and liven up their article bold, italics, numbers and bullets, a very limited selection! Next try and read an average article page on ezine articles, a significant number of them are written in broken English, some of them are completely incomprehensible!

Unfortunately ezine articles is becoming a big corporation, they are disconnected from the average user and they are suffering because of it. However, as they are becoming a big corporation they still have plenty of strength, they are still the default site to submit articles to, and will be for some time.

I have noticed, like a number of other people, that buzzle is going up the ratings fast. I think that the main reason for this is that Buzzle will only let you have an author account once you have submitted a writing sample, which keeps the people who can't write in decent English out. They are also constantly tweaking their site and the submission guidelines. Have you checked their submission guidelines recently, you can now include a picture with your article.

I think website articles is going to be a real winner this next year, other people have commented on the many reasons why they are currently a good directory. But three important points really stand out to me. First the membership fee keeps the riffraff out! This gives two main results first only people who are serious will join it, and second the staff don't have to wade through hundreds of junk articles everyday searching desperately for one they can easily approve.

Second their pages look good! A talented author can add various types of formatting to an article to make it look interesting, and that's before you add in pictures and video. Then every page is not covered in advertising and it looks like the whole point of the page is to showcase the article on it.

But the most important point is that the owner of the directory actually listens to his members! If a member wants a new feature then at the very least it will be considered. Rules can be challenged, they will be explained and enforced or consideration will be given to changing or dropping them.

I'll stop there, I can think of a lot more to say, but this is turning into a short report.

There are so many article directories, this does help to give someone an idea of ones they can look into.

On average how many article directories should one submit to if they aren't using software for article submission.

You make some very fresh and enlightening comments. Funny how common sense can shed light on something that people have unnecessarily made so convoluted over the years.

EzineArticles.com houses how many articles? It is only natural that they would have the most articles in the results pages.

However, if you take a smaller directory, let say...well...let's just say a smaller directory - and that directory only has 1500 articles, and a great majority of them place highly in the search engines...then it is safe to say that the smaller one is actually better than EZA as far as rankings go.

Several kickass article marketers have lately said that other directories are getting them better results than EZA.

Remember the ratio! Just because you see EZA results in all of the SERPs doesn't mean that you wouldn't get a better ranking submitting somewhere else.

All that being said...I suggest always also submitting to EZA no matter what. That too is common sense.

If it comes down to user experience as Google is pounding into our heads lately, then EZA article pages, which approve poor content, are smothered with ads, have mismatched ugly fonts and no media expect for banner ads, aren't going to be as dominant...or at least other directories will begin taking some of those SERPs results away from them.

2009 gives us a new year and a new direction. Give the user a great experience and you will get the traffic.

The truth is, the "only submit to 1 article site because it gets all the traffic" lie is a self fulfilling prophecy...you'll never get ANY traffic from an article site that you don't post to...and if everyone follows blindly along...then 1 article site DOES seem to bring all the traffic.

We've studied this and proved this until we were blue in the face.

There are 4 and only 4 things that affect the power of an article directory and I'll list them here in order of importance:

1. The ability of an article directory to rank it's content. (SEO, on and off page)

If ANY article site can cause your article to rank for a given term...then it is a potential source of search engine traffic.

2. The presentation of the SERPS...which comes down to coding issues in most cases. (Unique META tags)

3. The layout of the destination...how does the article look within the site itself? (Ads, popups, split up text, banners...these all take away from readibility...and therfore, clickability.)

The best article sites (from an article marketer's perspective) present their content clearly, in an attractive layout, and have an OBVIOUS resource link section to direct the readership away from the site.

4. The volume of "spinoff traffic" from the site...

This is where the largest article sites have a corner at the moment...because they are ranking for so many terms, you have a good chance of getting clicks via a "Related Articles" section on another article.

BUT...this is the least importance of the above factors...


I think where 99% of most go wrong is in trying to submit identical articles to multiple sites...

However, if you add even just a little creativity, you'd be amazed at how easy it is to get spun articles to rank at multiple sites.

Thanks for such a great list jbirdmanjr, nice to have everything organized into one source. An interesting point made by Jack, its always important to check first when submitting to make sure that you aren't "doubling up" on your article submissions, as some article sites are hosted by the same company, making your submission a double up in their terms of service. This can sometimes lead to getting your articles banned or cancelled it they perceive to be duplicate content. Great post!

In choosing your submission sources, the best ones to use are generally the ones that have a high ranking in the search engines on a regular basis. That way you can focus your article marketing efforts into those sources and you will get much more clicks and traffic results that way.
