Is Internet Marketing Dead?

I have been in the shadows of internet marketing on and off for the last 8 years. The biggest success I've had was when I organized my effort, focused on one market, and pursued one goal.

My question to all of you is, is "internet marketing" dead?

I know there are people making thousands of dollars pursuing dozens, even hundreds, of niches at once. But could they be making millions, or on their way at least, if they shifted all of their focus to building one, life-changing business?

This forum is an interesting collection of individuals and I'm looking forward to hearing your response.

No, not even close. Though based on what you wrote, I think you already knew that. IMHO, it's an even better time to start an online business than ever before in history. I see more opportunities today than I did just 5 years ago, even 3 years ago. With so many new market places, channels of distribution, mobile devices, tablets, etc. out there, it boggles my mind.

I've been at this for more than a decade and I've made just about every mistake in the book. There is certainly something to be said on focusing on one business at a time because you can scale up as high as the market (and your budget) will allow you to.

You eluded to the validity of focusing on one business. Which, imo, is genius.

I think the fact that there are so many opportunities makes it difficult to break out in a life-changing way. A newbie who is low in confidence in what they're doing might have a difficult time ignoring the noise.

They're fearful what they're doing isn't as good as the latest opportunity they happened to come across.

I think the important thing is to think about the game as BUSINESS, that is not only IM.

Like im working from my computer but im exporting to south america, so i what i did is pay commission to some friends to pick up, deliver product when im traveling.

So 1st off YOU CAN MAKE MONEY FROM A LAPTOP.

The 2nd thing, since this is an IM Forum, the cool thing about IM is that you can set up a business without having to ever touch physical product. Which makes it even more liberating.

I agree, it isn't "dead" in the most literal sense of the word. Let me ask you a question, deep down, do people want to make money, or change their life?

Internet marketing is just growing up and the internet is becoming a medium for connecting people, so the fade internet marketing with its building of hundreds of sites, or chasing the next chink in Google or Bing is dying.

We are back to relationships and relationship selling.

The biggest problem is today we have more people than ever desperately in need of money, and an educational system which at every turn does everything I can to keep people in the dark about how to make money. In the last 2,000 years of recorded history it has not changed, and yet there is not a public school, nor college that has their students read the books that have been written, and thus the greater public is looking to win the IM lottery, rather than how to render useful service in exchange for money.

LOL! It's just getting going! Can hardly believe how much has changed in the last couple of years even. Makes me wonder what will come next...

With so many different ways to market online - from mobile websites and QR codes to link building and the latest Google social media and everything else in between - IM is well and truly ALIVE!

It would certainly be more risky, putting all their eggs into one basket. Who knows what's around the corner.

That is a good point I'm glad you brought up.

IMO, the belief that someone should not "put all their eggs in one basket" comes from fear. I think your statement confirms this.

Paul Allen, Microsoft co-founder, declared "fearlessness tops the list" as the number one factor that lead to their success. (Success Magazine, Feb 2012, pg. 76)

If someone is going to change their life, and create something that matters, they'll need to overcome the fear.

Is this question at all even necessary?

Internet marketing is another kind of medium to utilize.

A good business can integrate online and offline marketing together. They operate synergistically and not treated as silos.

Instead of saying it's dead and creating hysteria on the warriorforum, what about saying IM is evolving instead as society grows and changes....

Internet marketing isn't even close to dead, it's more alive than ever before. The only thing that might be dead is the idea of internet marketing as a way of making money without providing value. Well yeah, that may be "dead," but who was better off when it was alive?

It's not going to die any time in the near future. It is a huge field with lots of people in it. The competition is so fierce that it might appear to some as dead. However, there is a huge market for internet marketing, and there is a lot of money to be earned. However, only the most determined, hardworking and talented people will get their hands on it.

I know you were half joking, but that was genius. It's basically what I was getting at...

IMO people who use "internet marketing" to "make money online" are missing a bigger opportunity to focus their effort, provide value to one market, and dominate the competition as a result.

Of course how you define "internet marketing" will determine your position, and I completely understand there are multiple ways to look at it.

If you make money from "internet marketing" I imagine someone who targets dozens of niches using seo, sales pages, freebies, social media, among other web tactics. That approach isn't dead, but for your sake, it should be.

Moving forward, I think the people who can organize their effort, and develop a true sustainable business that delivers value to one specific market, will win.

It's definitely not dead! There may be more competition now, but there's also much more opportunity in terms of markets and platforms.

It's tough to make a start, but you're right - focus is the key. I think the reason so many fail is because of the sheer breadth of opportunity there is, actually. It's difficult to pin just one thing down and stick to it long enough for it to work.

No it's not dead and no it's not any harder. IMO anyone who says any of these things is either:

    A) Terrible at marketing.

    B) Uneducated on what "marketing" really is.

    C) Lazy.

    D) Content pirate.

    E) Spammer.

    F) All of the above.

Look around, is it dead. Yes we may be able to focus our attention on 1 aspect, just 1 niche and make money. I have noticed most Imers are a little hyper and need that constant choice. It is how you manage the choices and work them that counts.

For me, one of my resolves for the year is to finish one thing before another this time. I think this will help me do better and focus better.

    No, not at all.

If anything, it has become more complicated and evolved.

I have been doing internet marketing for 12 years. It has changed a lot over the years. There is a lot more competition now, than there was a couple years ago. Everyday there are more and more trying to get the piece of the pie. With more players, the share of the pie gets smaller.

I can only speak for myself. I know it's not dead because I constantly scale up my efforts every month and am almost making 5 figures a month.

Losing my 9-5 was, in effect, the best thing that ever happened to me, because I know I never would have discovered Internet Marketing otherwise.

Since starting my business it's been an amazing and fulfilling journey, and not worrying about money anymore has improved the quality of my life tenfold.

In my opinion, internet Marketing is only going to get bigger and bigger as many folks find out that working for someone elsw just doesn't pay.

Internet marketing is still alive and kicking. As long as you have the ability to build a list, you're gonna have a money maker on your hand. Even though article marketing has taken a hit from Panda, it can still deliver traffic back to your website, and get website owners to put your content on their website. So IM is still good. A rugged marketing plan is necessary though.

Another important point in answering this question is to understand the motives and intentions of those that participate.

A successful Internet Marketer might not just be the 1000+ Product Launch Gurus and might not equally be the ones that make a full-time sustainable income through their efforts.

success is very individual, for example success could be a blog that makes no money but has many followers, success could be recognition of a perspective, success could be a purpose to meet on line and feel connected, success could be finding friends of a simillar mind and success could be whatever success is to you.

If you set achievable and realistic goals along your way to success, at each step you will find success in a minor way, have something to celebrate and the motivation to continue. If you set the target to earn 7 figures a month, then you will more likely fail to achieve that target, so again success is relative to your dreams or destination.

My next goal is to be in attendance at the next Warrior Live Event in March 2012. this is achievable but, being from the UK, is not as low a destination as some might think. My estimated budget will be around $5k and so that is my aim for now. If I am there, I have succeeded and if I see 250 other marketers there then Internet Marketing is certainly not dead in their eyes.

I belong to several Skype chatrooms and each day, more people join, starting off on their search for their dreams, whatever they might be. These people will all buy IM products, these people will all fuel the market and these people will become the market. And these people will be followed by more people and more people.

Everyone knows this question was just a stimulant and a way maybe to increase post counts but judging by the number of responses, it is also a question that is worthy of some consideration further than a one liner.

    Ok, nuff said.

I believe 2012 will see a change on how Internet Marketing
is portrayed and do see a shift where Relationship Marketing
is going to be key for businesses who use the Internet for

I have always looked at "IM" as just a medium. Back in 2001 when I was trying to figure out how to expand my sales in retail I learned real quick that just putting up a website did squat. Driving traffic and marketing my site via the internet was crucial.

Although I have purchased "IM" products, they were always just for me to learn more about HOW to market my biz. I never tried to make those products a biz in itself.

So I suppose it all depends on ones definition of IM. For me, it is a means to an end, so no, its not dead. As technology changes, more and more "tools" are being developed to help me market online. And I think that's just getting ramped up.

IM is in constant motion, and it takes time and effort (and focus) to determine what new tools benefit your business, but in the end, the opportunities are endless.

I know this is harsh, but the question is ridiculous.

I've noticed an inordinate number of people posting similar, meaningless questions lately. Sometimes I wonder if they start threads like this just to put off actually working on their business.

Maybe because they're so afraid they'll fail that they're afraid to even start???

Come on people! Enough already! Back to work!

And if you think I'm being too harsh, or are thinking, "What I meant was..." then you need to phrase your question to express what you really DO mean.

        Geez!

        Ok, off my soapbox now...

It is no secret that the Internet has changed (a lot) over the past several years. And due to the changes in technology and how consumers buy, the Internet marketing world has had to change too. Change is good though and it does not mean that a certain field is dead, just because it is not exactly the same as it used to be. I also have to question the motive behind those out there who do claim that the field is dead due to several reasons.

I think posts like this should be dead, they are used only as a way to get the forum into a heated debate over nothing. These outrageous and misleading headlines are rather annoying and this is coming from a new member. Seems to me this method of posting is a chance for some to puff out their chests like roosters in heat, "I'm right and this is why..." or to spam with one liners to increase their overall post count.

If IM was dead you wouldn't even have to ask the question to begin with. You know it's not, I know it's not and any smart marketer knows it's not dead it's just not for everyone. I would liken IM to the gold rush, some people will be smart in their choices they make online and find gold while others will chase wild dreams and end up with a bunch of useless fool's gold.

Internet is just a media, and marketers use it to advertise their offers, so it is no much difference from advertising on traditional medias.

What you mean if you say Internet marketing is dead?

This media is dead, absolutely not.

    Marketing is dead, no way.

    Dead? Good question. Nope.

    It's Only getting better!

More people are starting to use the Internet every day. So there is a constant rise of traffic online now and one that will 'keep growing'

As long as there are websites making money, it's not dead.

And since we are here on a website....well I think it's safe to say that it's alive

Is Internet marketing Dead? Is Email Marketing Dead? Is (fill in the blank) _____ DeaD??

NO.. Never WAS "Dead" and never will be "Dead". It's dead in your mind.

When you have the wrong mindset and a losing mentality you are fighting an uphill battle. The only time something is ever "Dead" is when you give up and quit!

Internet marketing will never 'be dead' the way that i see it is that internet marketing is only growing.

    And fast!

You see all around you, computers, mobiles, tablets all these different devices that you can advertise to. allowing yourself to generate more income and leads!

So i would say keep going with internet marketing.

Its the only place that i know to date, that you can reach highly targeted visitors for extremely low prices.

    Hope this helped.

Yes and as the Internet matures the content becomes more structured and allows multiple angles at certain niches and markets... they once said watch out the Internet will soon be ubiquitous (i.e. everywhere to the point where no one notices yet utilizes in just about everything they do...) Well that day is definitely here and now it's time to add value, monetize and enjoy :-)

Like anything, some aspects that used to work in internet marketing have died. That just means others have come alive and replaced them. Internet marketing doe not die, it evolves.
