Site flippers, what am I doing wrong? **Another question**

I want to sell a Wordpress site I built. So I followed directions on a video I have and downloaded all the files via FTP into a folder. I then exported the data base. I had multiple choices but just took the default as I don't know what I am doing.

So I create a folder on the web, and install Wordpress and upload all the files and import the data base. I get an error after trying to import the data base. So what the hell am I supposed to do? This is the file that I just downloaded, but after I upload it, it doesn't work.

What am I doing wrong?

Edit: Another question in post #5

There wasn't a code, so I upload the message. I had to try to upload it again to get the picture.

Are you trying to import the database into an existing database that already has wp tables in it?

If so then you will need to create a new blank database and user, assign the user to the database...Give all user privileges...and then import the .sql file into the new blank database.

Now you will have to edit the wp-config file with the new database information.

***Also you will have to change the home url of the wp to match the new domain if it is different from the domain that you had originally.

I'm very good with transferring files, so if you need any help feel free to PM me

That is where I screwed up. I should not have used Fantastico to create the blog.

          Thanks everyone for your help.

Should I have not used Fantastico to install Wordpress when I created this new blog. I am wondering if I should have just uploaded the files from the original instead of using Fantastico.

When you use Fantastico to create the blog, you will have to first delete all the tables in the database that fantastico created and then import the new database. You can't import over an old database.

Hmm.. from the the title, I thought this a thread about site flipping.
You should call for FTP, SQL or Wordpress experts instead of flippers :-)

Sorry, I thought flippers would know how to do this. That is the point of this. I am practicing moving a site so I know how to do it so if the buyer can't, I can help them.

Well here is my Tip for you timpears....

Goto PhpMyAdmin and see what it contains.... If it have few tables say 3-4 delete select them all and delete but if there are 6-7-8 or more tables do nothing just come back and edit your wp-config.php and edit these.....

    database user
    databse name
    database pass
database host "usually localhost, but you should check if you are with hostings like fatcow or Godaddy etc... they have different databse hosts than localhost"

Also please paste your website url so that we might help you in right way....

    Tim Pears,

Do yourself a favor and get Backupbuddy. It makes doing this so simple. You can litterly backup the original site and move it in about 15 minutes. The only thing that slows you down is the changing the nameservers because once the change request has been initiated it could take from 5 minutes to several hours for it to complete. Backupbuddy comes in handy when you really get into the website flipping game.

    Best of Luck.

lol I can't stand those plugins I guess I'm old school...or working for hostgator has gotten me accustom of just doing the xfer manually, I actually do that faster than using backupbuddy, I somehow always get stomped in the instructions as Ive seen about 20 different plugins like it (and I must say that most of them are horrible lol)

Remember after you have moved the database to use the "Search" function in PHPMyAdmin. Select all tables, and search for your domain, and replace all occurrences with the new domain (only applies if you changed domain).
Also search for your user account name on old host (/home/username/public_html), and, again, replace any occurrences with account username on new host - this will cover any WP options or plugins which are using full hosting paths.
