QUESTION: Fastest/Best ways to message a group?

Hi. I'm genuinely interested in learning about some ways or experiences that people have had in using online/desktop instant messaging applications or tools, and how well they work in messaging groups (large or small) of people online. Any information about costs or better yet, free...would also be good. I just downloaded "friendbar" this morning and with it, I get constant updates from those in both my "Twitter" and "Facebook" networks without logging into either site. Anyway, feel free to discuss about this topic here!
