111,885 Views, 236 Comments & ZERO Income

A friend of mine asked how many visitors, days, weeks,
years it takes to make mony from ads.

My reply to him was simple.

1.

He then sent me to an Instructable he made in 2007
that has 111,885 views & 236 comments but has made
him a WHOPPING ZERO dollars.

Nothing. Nada. Zilch.

Sure, it's a free instruction and from what I have seen,
Instructables.com doesnt share revenue but with that
many views he should be making money with it.

So... What would you do to turn this around?

Would you turn it into a Kindle/Nook ebook?

Put it on a site and give it away and upsell videos?

He says he has 800k newsletter subscribers, does he at least make money off of that ?

if you say no, you need to smack your friend upside the back of his head.

he has a "pro" section , bottom price $2.oo a month.

if he is not even making money with that. to me, it sounds liek most people
are getting what they want for free, OR they are just one time visitors.

Both things can be fixed rather easy.

    A) limit what they can do for free, more then it currently is.

    B) figure out a way to make them repeat customers.

.... Side note: maybe hes giving to much away in his news letter?

also on the purchase page, i just two lists. supposed benefits of why you want to buy pro.

but i don't see any "real " reason, any real call to action

          ok, wait a sec....

you had typed Instructables.com. which i visited,
then you put a link in your text, to a sub page.

so your friend doesnt own Instructables.com ?

he just has a page, selling the BB gun? which s not making any money
          is this correct ?

Yes. His page is the BB gun page only.

I was confused. The site provides zero revenue sharing.

You have never heard of instructables.com?

They are fairly popular and rank on the 1st page
of Google for a lot of "How To" type questions,
            a lot like mashables.

But, the only reward for authors is recognition
and insults from other members, for the most part.

he is probably going to have to put his article
            somewhere else.

I agree with this statement it might be easier if he publishes a similar (not the same because thats delicate content and google hates that) somewhere else that you now will make him money. Maybe on hubpages or squidoo at least then you will be making money for sure ... in due time and hard work of course!

Oops. I forgot to add the URL.

And no. He doesn't have anything tangible from it.

    GarrieWilson,

Does your friend have an actual website?

If so he will benefit from having a link back to his site where he can then sell them something....

He could record a step by step construction of a similar bb gun and offer a product based on that.

Hard to see him making anything off instructables...when I cannot see much of an attempt at monetizing it.

    Regards

    Chris
