Military boot camp site: Monetization Ideas

Hey all,

I'm in the process of creating a site called Marine OCS Guide, which is a guide to help candidates succeed at United States Marine Corps Officer Candidate School. The site is in the process of being created by myself and a friend who have both attended and graduated from the school are currently creating articles and building the site but I was curious about some monetization ideas.

I think that Amazon Associates will work well, as we'll be able to suggest specific books for candidates to read to better their expectations of Marine OCS. Other than that, I'm a little stuck on monetization ideas however. I could always go for the traditional Google AdSense placement, but I think that will leave money out on the table once we build the site and begin to receive targeted traffic.

If anyone is familiar with monetization in the military niche or has some ideas, I'd love to hear them. Thanks for the help!

This is just my opinion, but honestly what I would do is not include any adsense, or anything similar - including the Amazon banner atop the page. Make it look more professional. People want to hear from a trusted source and not from someone who has PPC ads on the page.

Now, the way I would monetize this is by writing a guide, or guides that can help others and placing them on Amazon books. You can then include a link on your website and you can even give snipets of that guide.

    Just my 2 cents.

P.S. I should add that the OCS store is a good idea but what would be even better is adding reviews or information about each book.

Thanks Chris.. An e-book is definitely a possibility I've been thinking of. Once we get a good amount of content on the page, maybe we can compile the best posts together along with some advanced designs and sell that for $5-10.

As someone who attended OCS, I know my biggest fear was failure and I did anything to prepare myself beforehand to NOT fail. I think if I help others do that by providing value, their are great possibilities for the site.

Realize that I was looking at military boot camp sites over the summer, because I was looking to put my oldest on the straight and narrow.

A lot of people landing on your site might be looking to find help for their kids.

With that in mind, tell people what your site is, and if they were looking for something slightly different, then go here.

Some time ago, I built a few military-related sites, and used several of the military affiliate programs offered through Commission Junction (e.g. U.S. Cavalry Affiliate Program, Government Military Surplus, etc.) to monetize them. I think military.com also offered one, though it now seems to be defunct.

Although an ebook is probably your best bet, these affiliate programs may be worth looking into, especially if you integrate them well into the site, and they don't look like ads...

I also think an ebook would have some potential.

    Hi,

I have a few military websites (specifically Marine Corps) as I am a former Marine and chose to target this niche when I first got into internet marketing. I've gotta say, this niche has been challenging for me to monetize and I have yet to find the best way.

Most of my sites are based on Marine Fitness and military fitness and I have created eproducts that I sell that do fairly well. However, I have found over the years that most people coming to these sites are only interested in information and not buying anything. Here's what has worked for me...

    1. Selling my own products (most lucrative)
    2. Reviewing products from amazon and other affiliate networks that may interest my visitors such as pull up bars, fitness equipment, books and other items that may be of interest to someone having interest in the Marines
    3. Using Adsense throughout the blog and informational posts

Like I said though, I feel like I have yet to discover what really works for this niche and would be happy to hear what works for you and how your site / product is doing.

    Hope this helps

    Hi Mate,

I'd imagine that "Close Quarter Combat" or Combat Fitness
style products would fit in well.

Your first step should be to create an email list so you
can stay in touch with your website visitors.

Not only will you have an asset that you can use over
and over again, but you can send out affiliate offers
    to them.

The form on your page, kind of blends in. I would make it
stand out more, and also have an exit pop-up.

Give them a gift to coax them into leaving their name
    and email address.

Some affilaite programs may have a branded report
that you can give away. Instead of just a generic
    "You'll get updates" message.

    Hope this helps.

    Take Care,

    Michael Silvester
