Biggest List Building Mistakes

OK Warriors. I've made this mistake twice now and frankly its time I learned from it. I figured posting it here would help me remember in future and help other people out as well.

Not having full control of the list (preferably using a professional auto-responder). The first time I setup a list I captured emails using my own system that I wrote. Figuring it'd give me more control and I could expand it. Disaster. The software didn't do anywhere near as much a professional auto-responder and my delivery rate was ridiculously low. I also lost *tons* of subscribers when I finally got wise and signed up to a professional service.

Then, to make it worse. When I redid the service that built that first list. I made the same mistake all over again. Figuring I'd be better off doing it myself. I'm such a fool. This time I couldn't even import the 1000+ leads I captured because my professional service deemed them out dated and unusable!

Unless you're going to commit tons of time to your own list building software (or at least using something really good like PHPList) then sign up for a professional auto-responder service and use it properly.

Please add your own and help other people learn from your mistakes.

Cheers,

Andy

Its 100% worth the money. My autoresponder list is second only to one of my own products for shipping me cash and even that product made most of its sales because I sent traffic from my list in the beginning.

ohh wow I feel your pain. A lead verifier would have worked for you. That is why I use my own mail server.

Personally, my Aweber subscription has saved me hours of time and I'm happy to pay 20$ a month to have it.

That's one of the best list building tips I ever received...that being "Get Aweber"

    Cheers,

I agree Brad - it may seem a big investment to begin with but it is well worth it compared to undelivered mail.

Andy - I had the same problem with two previous mailers so hats off to you - it took me two attempts to get my act together! Oh, and around 300 lost leads (ouch)

Most email marketers do the following mistake:

They forget to keep contant contact with their list. Once the subscriber subscribed > gets some free reports or ecourse, they forget about the subscriber. But better is to keep your subscriber in a loop so they won't forget their subscription. (There are always unsubscribers, don't worry about them. Just be thankful to them )

I send out a newsletter every week to my subscribers, with a reminder at the end of the message when and how they subscribed. Listing your business address and toll-free phone number helps retain subscribers.

Well, with my monthly backlink service converting around 3% at the special rate in the WSO/to my list 1000 lost leads = 30 x $10 a month = $300 a month.

From that ONE product/service let alone all the other affiliate products/my own stuff etc etc.

      *Cries a little*

    I guess you're right Radika,

As a rule I tend to leave my autoresponder with three and four day gaps between follow ups and even have one message that goes out ten days after the last - (I apologise for not keeping in touch of course).

What do you think of this as a timescale?

Ouch. I am so glad I outsourced the whole autoresponder thing to aweber.

    Totally worth $20 a month.

Andy - this one is easy: biggest mistake = NOT having a list i.e. not building one!!

Simply stupid (and yep I put myself in that category) not having a list from the beginning.
