dress standards and video presentations

am i the last one left who considers clothes maketh the man?

i do not watch a lot of video presentations, even less to their completion

if someone fronts up in a hoodie and baseball cap, the only thing i would ever consider buying from them are hoodies and baseball caps both of which i abhor

are clothes and personal presentation still important or am i too busy focusing on the messenger instead of the message?

It depends what type of message you are trying to convey.

If you remember all the old Frank Kern videos, he usually had scruffy long hair, unshaven, wearing a tshirt and shorts driving around in his combie van with his surfboard on top. Was this a good idea? Hell yeah, because Frank was selling the dream of the laid back lifestyle where you make money online and don't need to dress up in a suit and go off to work everyday. If he was nice and clean cut and had worn a suit in all his videos then people are going to think damn, I don't want to listen to this guy, he still has to get dressed up in fancy suits everyday to earn his money. That's not the type of lifestyle I want!

So you see, it really depends who you are targeting. Just like if I was going for a job interview in a bakery I probably wouldn't wear a whole suit and tie -- maybe just some pants and a shirt. But if I was going for a job interview at a stock broking firm then I would want to wear the whole bag of fruit (suit).

Dress for the occasion -- that's the only rule.

You made a really good point there WillR! It brings people to the comfortable laid back mood of working from home and earning online

It depends on the demographics you're trying to target.

For me if someone was giving me a presentation on MMA I would be expecting him to be wearing his fighting gear.

Or, if someone was giving me a presentation on how to better my stock portfolio I would respect their information more if they were professionally dressed.

    Always research your demographics.

Exactly. When you watch videos from these 20- or 30-somethings that are (at least supposedly) living the life of success that most people here desire, they are playing the part. It's just like showing off their brand new sports car or giant house. They are displaying and portraying the "benefit" of their success gained through their methods.

As others have mentioned, it has a lot to do with what you're selling and your story as the seller. There's definitely a line there somewhere. Perhaps it's when the seller's style tips, in your own personal judgment, from "casual" to "suspect" that the clothes are no longer appropriate - since that is when you are going to be turned off and will no longer be receptive to the seller's message.

While I do believe in trying to always look your best...

I also believe in being yourself...

I don't make it a habit to wear suits and stuff around on a normal basis so I feel if I "dressed up" just to do my videos then I'm misleading my subscribers...

I want them to know that I'm "just like them"... Although I do try to dress decent with a polo shirt sometimes... But I'm guilty of rocking a hoodie on occasion too...

That's just me... If you were to see me in public I'd likely be dressed the same way

Yeah, depends on your target audience. But that doesn't mean a 50-year old man should dress like a rapper

But also depends on what is being sold... Only experience will tell I guess

I'm frequently in shirt and tie on my videos. That's just the way I like to dress.

My basic rule, don't dress any way that makes you uncomfortable. I'm perfectly happy in a tie; other people, it drives them crazy. If you're not comfortable wearing something, don't wear it. The discomfort will put people off more than the clothes will draw them in.
