Can anyone recommend a good help desk software I can install on my web server to allow some user self service and cut down on my support emails?

Kayako tends to be the standard choice, they offer a monthly service or you can buy it outright. It's kinda expensive but does offer live support, real-time visitor tracking, ticket's, knowledge base and much more.

I have used it on quite a few projects and it is very capable indeed. There are alternatives which you can find on Hotscripts.com or something similar under the PHP section.

I picked one up from the php junkyard about two years ago. Is is free and highly customizable running php on the front end and mysql backend. Very easy to install. It allows you to setup a ticket based support system, knowledge base, and other features comparable to software (including Kayako) costing $200 or more.

I've heard great things about Willie Crawfords Three Pillars Help Desk: Three Pillars Help Desk Software - The Support Desk Designed For And By Internet Marketers. I thought that was the software that powered the WF help desk but don't quote me on that

Three Pillars if you want to buy it or Hesk if you want free (follow Paul's link).

I use Hesk and it works fine.

    Thanks,

    John
