How to do facebook marketing for a Physical Product Company?

I have a prospective client that is offering a physical product that has been around for a while, but never available in the US before. The product is mostly designed for middle-aged to older people. But they want to connect to the younger crowd too.

In the US, they want to;
  1. "connect with the community"
  2. "offer an interactive site where we can get the word out about our company/product"
  3. "have a very professional and uniquely designed site"
They are convinced that getting on facebook (older crowd) or MySpace (younger crowd) is the right kind of site to get the word out and get interactive with the public. They have an admitted small (as yet undetermined) budget for this.

My understanding of those two sites and how they can work from a product marketer's perspective is limited. I'm not sure how "customizable" these sites are. It seems that the main value to a marketer is getting a ton of "friends" and then talking about your product and the problems that it solves.

Is there significantly more value to either of these sites to a marketer than that? If not, what other ways are there to get the word out and get interactive with a big audience, on a limited budget (let's assume <$1K)?

My thoughts were:
  1. a uniquely designed blog, load it with PLR articles, videos, etc.
  2. start a Yahoo group on the problem subject area, post often
  3. start a Google group on the problem subject area, post often
  4. create a Squidoo page
Your thoughts?
