Question regarding having both HTML and PHP pages.

Frist off, I'm still a bit green in IM and website building so this may seem like a pretty stupid inquiry to some of you, but I have to ask...

Is there a problem with having both HTML and PHP pages uploaded to the server? I'm using Xsitepro to build some sites and when I decided to change my page extensions to PHP, I now have that and my old HTML pages. I guess you can say I'm only worried that I will somehow get penalized for having both versions up.

The reason I have both up is that I had backlinks directed to my old HTML pages (which I realized a bit late before switching over), but when I deleted them to replace with PHP, they obviously would produce the 404 error. I wanted to keep the old backlinks so that's why I uploaded HTML versions back up again.

So my obvious concern here is some crazy assumption that I get penalized for duplicate content for having both kids of pages uploaded. I'm wondering if I should just stick with the one format. Sorry if this all sounds a bit confusing, but does anyone care to chime in and help a newbie out?
