What to do with wasted domain names

Hi (first post so please be gentle!).

I've got some domains, each with a unique website and a few articles posted up. I created them before I knew much about IM, and thus they're a bit of a waste. They each get a couple of hits a day from Google Searchers, but I don't really have much interest in doing much more with them.

I was about to delete them, then I wondered - are domains like this completely worthless and destined for the bin? Or is there some value in having a few random websites sitting online?

I don't pay anything for the hosting, so I'm only paying to renew the names.

What do you lot reckon? I'm not sure I could sell them without much content and any proven earnings!

Post the domain names and let us look. There is alot that goes into domain names, but number one is the name. I have hundreds and let dozens slip yearly. Imers buy domain names sometimes like it's candy, we get some idea up our head one day and the next, think no way.

Post the names. Like this, soandso dot net or dot come

You could try and sell them. Someone in that niche might be looking for an aged domain. Additionally you could just through up a generic offers portal or something of that nature.

if you think these domains are good and attractive there might be many webmasters interested in buying them from you. Post their names here and let other warriors tell you if they are good or not.

    Here's 3...

    hackproject dot com
    wpdoctor dot com
    weatherinlondon dot net

They were more experiments than anything else. It's hard just letting them go as some of the took time to create. Any value in keeping these going? Reckon someone else would see value in them?

I will make an offer but I will also tell you the truth. I like the domain names and think you should keep them and work them. Either there catchy or have a great keyword. I sort of like the websites too, if it was me I would concentrate on these domains and build them. All good niches.

Post them on Sedo. I sold a domain name with the word 'doctor' in it for $200. WPdoctor is a great domain name for someone offering WPrepair business, look for those services, and send them e-mails asking if they wanna buy the name.
    Thanks

I have never sold on sedo but do have about ten sites I listed about 2 days ago on there. No offers yet but I am proud so I am asking a whole lot lol. I do think flippa and sedo is better choices than here or dp.

Post them for sale on here or flippa.com.

I think they have some value and plus, you could continue to host them and charge the new owner less than it would cost them elsewhere to host and make a little money that way.

I know people who make their living just flipping websites like this and also offering hosting for them.

I would NOT just let them go.

You could add a bit more content (make sure it's original), spruce up the designs if need be, and try to sell them on Flippa. Or just list the domains on Sedo. It's always worth it to at least try to sell something if you don't need it. What may be something that's not useful to you may be a valuable piece of virtual real estate for someone else.

They have value just as domains, plenty more so with the sites. Some good backlinks there as well.
Definitely nurture and improve them, they're worth it, and, whatever you do, do NOT send them to "the bin"!

If fact hackerproject is already primed, with very little work you could increase the value to that one by 1000 percent in a month.

Absolutely right! Are you sure you want to sell that? If so, for how much?

In the space of 20 minutes I've had 4 PMs with offers for the WP domain, and huslinsmoke is saying the hackproject domain is already primed.

Would anyone care to tell me what they'd do with these domains i they had them? and why they're interested in them?

Perhaps an idea is all I need to make something of these...

Well, I am the de facto WP-doctor for the half of the forum
(a.k.a. the resident WP guy of the warriorforum)... so I should have got it as a Xmas gift - but I am OK even with a decent deal :p

For me each domain is worth something.
Hackproject - I would use it for video game hacks of course with affiliate offers.
Wpdoctor - I would probably use it for helping people with WordPress problems and add a forum to it.
weatherinlondon - really don't want that one but if I lived in London I would make it an all around site about the weather and social site.

All sites would be monetized and seo would be my number one concern. I would grow these sites slowly over the year so I would not get sandboxed, I would build quality links probably about a 2 or 3 a month the first month and add 1 or 2 each other month, so by the end of the year about a dozen a month.

I could go on and on but you get the meaning.

P.S. These would be base domains for me, in other words domains I would keep for a long time for income, although I'm not married to any of my domains so I would sell if the price was right.

I do not think that is allowed, although I do not know. I will try it, hopefully they give a notice of infraction here. I am about to go to bed though, I work tomorrow and have to be bright eyed as I'm a nurse and do not want to hurt people lol.

Note ADDED....... I will check email in a.m. and I will answer your questions to the best of my ability.
Have a good night and glad we caught you before you sold them.

Honestly, I am kinda in the same position, I own a couple of sites that i managed to get to rank on the first page of google, but I'm just not making money on them. Depending on their search engine ranking, you should try to give it a shot, on trying to revive them, especially if you had them for a while, are aged and built some page rank.

Definitely you can sell them in group on Flippa as they are good domain names.
Also if you aren't looking out for any money, then you can have some kind of contest as giving away these domain names ( you can make some rule like they need to subscribe to your list or they need to enter their mail id & opt in) . You may get many people who are interested to get these domains. Select one from the list (through random.org etc) and give away each one a domain

And for this free giveaway, you can get great opt in list which can be used at later stages

If it is not turning a profit, and looks like it won't without more effort than you want to or can put in, then keep the content and don't renew the domain, IMO. GL.

This illustrates perfectly why its a complete waste of time to build dozens of websites if you dont know what youre doing.

At best I would consider keeping them and using them purely for backlink building purposes.

You can use seolinkvine to get automatic free content posted to your blog every day. Also monetization could be added such as affiliate programs, cpa, cpm or cpc networks

Those examples you gave aren't bad at all. If you do sell on Flippa, I'd highly suggest selling them as sites vs. domains even if the sites aren't getting much traffic. In my humble opinion domain-only listings there don't do very well and is not worth the listing fees.

If you sell as domains, definitely list at Afternic and Sedo (the 2 major marketplaces), but there are also plenty of domain and webmaster forums you can try to list them for sale at, including here.

Hard for me to conceive of a "wasted" domain name. I mean, these domains you mentioned seem like marketable names to me. Personally, I'd sit on 'em or either build enough value to flip them. You've got them. The biggest error I see would be to do nothing.

I've sold dozens of domains at sedo and bought some valuable ones there as well.

Maybe you don't want to invest a lot into the process of finding a buyer... just an idea: you could go to where potential buyers are directly and sell the domain or site... for instance, to a blogger or marketer in that niche... or go to a niche forum and make an offer there, if you're already established there...

Someone may want an aged domain or blog with content to use it for backlinking purposes to their main niche blog or resource site or create another squeeze blog on it if it already has some traffic (as you say, a few hits a day)..

btw: nice designs, and you've got quite some articles there already.

      Good luck!

      Curious how it goes.

I'm overwhelmed by the positive responses I've had here, so thanks to all that have taken the time to reply.

After reading some of the ideas being bounced around this post/forum, I'm going to work on a plan over the next few weeks which should hopefully help make these domains work better for me. Time will tell... I'll keep the forum updated

If you don't have the time to do anything with them, then i'd recommend selling them but do some research on how much their worth first. Or wait until you have time and work on them then. Like hustlinsmoke said, they're great domains and could be built into great websites

@SteveO - if you list your domain on sedo, be on the look out for emails from some company CEO who offers you 5 or 6 figure sums to buy your domain.

The email will say their company is not in the business of buying domains but would be interested if you use their designated domain valuer.

    It's a scam.
