Hi,

I'm planing to register a new domain name for my new site and i have following queries regarding it:

1. Should i use highly searched keyword with low competition or low searched keyword?

2. Can i use stop word like "from" for domain name?

Any help would be highly appreciated.

Regards
Nick

I think you should ask yourself what the domain name is going to be for. I mean, do you want to build a brand upon it or do you just want the domain name shows what the website is about?

If you want to build a brand, choose something that would be catchy and easy to remember and would represent you as well.

But if you want to use it for a microniche website that is going to be with 4-6 blog posts, then use the keyword if it's available. If not just add "x" or "z" at the end or "the" at the beginning.

You want to use the word "from" in the domain name? I don't see a reason why you couldn't. Example: studyfromhome.com there is the word from. No problem with it.

Just ask yourself what you want the domain name use it for.

    Hope it helps

Thanks that is what i was looking for and now I'm almost done. One more question for example if my target keywords are "iphone to pc" and "iphone to mac" and both of them are not available with .com,.net, .org and even with variations like "iphone to pc transfer", "iphonepctransfer" etc.

After considering the above situation i can go for,

(1). pcfromiphone.com ( Highly searched exact keyword with almost 200000 searches) But not much appealing to me personally.

(2). iphonetopcsoftware.com ( It can cover one of my targeted keyword but searched only 22000 times)

Now which one should i go for. I'm not looking for maintaing a brand name, just want to take the advantage of keyword factor in domain. Any other alternatives are welcome too.

I like the first and second.

But the first will yield more competiton and make it harder to rank.
The second would make it easier to rank but less searches.

Which do you prefer, I prefer the latter which is less competition. Now if you want to get completely radical. Why not go for both and make both sites with unique content.

Personally i too like the second one. Bus as an exact keyword there are more searches on

    "pc from iphone"

But the domain name doesnt look much appealing with stop word "from".

Here is the result what Google Keyword Says:

    Iphone to Pc(My Primary Keyword)
    Searches: 1,500,000
    Competition: Low 0.18

    PC from Iphone
    Searches: 1,500,000
    Competition: Low 0.18

    Iphone to pc software
    Searches: 22,000
    Competition: Mediam 0.49

      You are making two mistakes.

      1. Looking at the broad match results instead of exact match.

      2. Thinking the competition value is the competition for ranking for that keyword.

Looking at the exact match figures will give you much better idea of the potential traffic.

      iphone to pc

      GMS: 2900
      LMS: 590

      pc from iphone

      GMS: <10
      LMS: -

      iphone to pc software

      GMS: 110
      LMS: 36

Thanks Peter. I got your second point about the competition value but what are these statistics:

        phone to pc
        GMS: 2900
        LMS: 590[/B]

Means there are only 29 hundred global monthly searches for the exact keyword? Can you please elaborate it more? Would it be a bad idea to use it as a primary keyword?

          GMS = Global Monthly Searches
LMS = Local Monthly Searches (US)

So for that particular keyword phrase, if your site was ranked #1, you could expect around 36% of that total (the percentages vary a bit, but generally between 30%-50%), so that would give you around

1044 visitors per month or 34 visitors per day for that particular keyword.

Now in reality, no site gets traffic based on one single keyword. You'll find that you'll pick up some supplementary traffic for long tail keywords.

Additionally, if you optimize your pages for other related keywords, that all helps drive more organic traffic to your site.

My suggestion is to register a domain that will match your keywords from medium to low competition if you are looking for ranking in Search Engines and if its not your primary task to rank on 1st page for that keyword then you can select High competition keywords as well....

Also you can try to use a search term for your domain that is going to help you alot....

just watch out for using iphone or apple TM's in domains they have gone after people.
Also if ever you want to do google ads etc you'll run into troubles /iphone would work.
Should be fine but good to keep in mind.

Use highly search keywords and keep your URL short. Do not use the "from" word in the URL.

I know that there are lots of niche domain finder software products that are supposed to help do the keyword value research and then find a domain to cache on your primary keyword. I've never found a piece of software that I really really liked, though. Any seasoned warriors have some specific recommendations for software to help with both of these factors (for adsense/affiliate banner oriented website creation)?

My suggestion is select the domain according to your niche. Its better practice if you will put the keyword or combination of keywords or services you are offering. But separate that with(-) .
