How Does Article Marketing Work?

In my investigations of Article Marketing techniques... and after reading many posts on this forum about the issue (especially those of Alexa Smith, who seems to be an expert at this), I concluded that:

1) Most people don't use Article Marketing as should be intended.

2) Most people are hoping to gain a back-link from the ezine site itself.

3) The right way, it seems, is something that can be described by following diagram:

My apologies for the sloppiness of this image. site1,site2 and site3 are sites like ezinearticles.com. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

    That is basically it but you should put the articles on your own site before you submit them to the directories.

    IMO article marketing is old school and doesnt work on the internet of today. When was the last time you saw an ezine article on the first page of google? However, their is a potential use for them and that is creating backlinks to your site. Creating original content on your site is a far better strategy than submitting to these old school article sites. Thats it. Dont think in this day and age your article will see the time of day in the SERPs.

      You are referring to article directory marketing, which never was a good idea. The OP is referring to article syndication marketing, which has always worked and always will work.

      The back link you get from an article directory is practically worthless, and should never be the reason for depositing an article there.

      Creating original content on your site is indeed a good strategy. From there you might consider finding suitable and relevant syndication outlets, authority sites and blogs in your niche, to distribute your article to, finally submitting it to EzineArticles to increase the chance of further syndication (but not for the worthless back link).

        Iris, you almost have it.

        What's missing from your diagram would look something like

        Publisher1 --> Readers --> Your website
        Publisher2 --> Readers --> Your website
        Publisher3 --> Readers --> Your website
        Publisher4 --> Readers --> Your website
        Publisher5 --> Readers --> Your website
        Publisher6 --> Readers --> Your website

        etc.

        The SEO benefits are a happy side effect, kind of like Viagra (which was originally developed as a blood pressure med)...

          I'm going to get outclassed on this subject, if people are going to start doing flow-diagrams and charts and stuff ...

          If anyone wants one, post #2 of this thread contains a fairly decent list of "main points" and "threads to read" about article marketing, I think: http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...ries-work.html

          Excuse the duplicate content () but some of those are the same ones that John kindly posted above.

    OP, you're actually missing most of the point of Alexa's strategy, which is not getting backlinks. The main point is to get her writing in front of the readers of the many outlets which syndicate her work. This then brings traffic back to her site through the resource box, allowing her to add new subscribers to her list.

    This obviously results in SEO benefits due to the backlinks from websites that syndicate her work but, according to her and others like Paul Uhl who use this approach, the SEO benefits are secondary to the traffic benefits of syndication.

    I apologize for speaking on behalf of Alexa in case she would put it differently, but this is my understanding after reading many of her posts on the topic.

    As others have said you pretty much got it down. With that being said, its also common to mass submit to tons of directories and blogs directly. In that case I don't use the same article on my site.

      It is indeed: that's very common among the majority of people who don't ever make a success of it, and eventually start off all those threads with titles like "Article Marketing Is Dead".

      That's exactly what they've almost all been doing. And that's also why it didn't work for them.

      They never understood the difference between article marketing and article directory marketing, and were struggling, against all the odds, to use article directories and/or blog networks for their own traffic and/or their own backlinks. :p

    You should write quality articles and then:
    -submit to article directories
    -submit to ezine publisher
    -submit to other websites
    -send to your list
    -publish on blogs

    Please excuse the observation that you could hardly have been more misinformed, then, CMK.

    Article marketing is a traffic-generation method in its own right, not "an aspect of SEO".

    It's for people who don't want their businesses to be dependent on search engines for its primary traffic.
