How useful is your signature???

Hi warriors!

You may have noticed I'm not using a signature yet (unless you're reading this waaaaaay after I posted it), but I'm planning to once I am able to make it worthwhile and have something decent to offer.

However, I was just curious about the kind of results other people are getting with their signatures. Now, I know it all depends on your presentation, offer and copy, and there are a zillion different variables but I was just wondering...

- How many clicks per month on average you are getting from your signature and how many posts per month or day you are making to get the exposure needed to get those clicks?

- Have you seen much of an increase in clicks using an image instead of text?

- What matters most - current posts (say you don't have a massive total post count, but you're making a lot of useful and relevant posts recently), or loads of historical posts (if you aren't making that many posts these days, but you have a few hundred or thousand in total under your belt in older threads?

- Are your conversion rates from signature clicks comparable with the conversion rates from other traffic sources (such as solo ads etc.) going to the same offer?

I thought this could be quite an interesting subject to put out there and I'm sure I'm not the only one who would appreciate any figures or feedback on this.

Cheers! J

I have gotten my best clients from my signatures on forums - they already know somewhat who you are, they can trust you, and they more likely become a long time customer because of that. So I can say my signature has paid for itself.

I don't see much coming from it, maybe a couple clicks a day. But I don't post a ton either and I'm not depending on clicks from here. Not really my focus, but every little bit counts I suppose.

But like you said, there are SOOOOOO many variables that it's hard to quantify and compare.

I get a great response from my signature below. It's still one of my smallest amounts of traffic but I notice whenever I post something really helpful I get a handful of opt-ins. Of course, I'm giving something away for free for an opt-in, so that will almost always get a better response compared to overtly trying to sell someone your most expensive product.

When I was working in other niches like weight loss and seduction, I had much higher opt-in's due to my signature on forums I would casually post on. The reason for that is because those forums weren't used to everyone having a signature like that, where on warrior forum every other person does. The real trick, whatever your niche is, is to post something that it ends up becoming a sticky on a high traffic forum. That's a good traffic source for years, as far as I'm concerned.

Thanks for all the replies and well done to lassy715 - that is very encouraging.

Oh and aplologies to Istvan - I typed it up in Word and pasted it over here, so the font must have pasted in as well. I usually do that in forums and blog posts/comments as my typing is pretty rubbish, but have just realised there's a spellchecker here now, so will type directly in future!

Great advice there Steve, and yeah I'd heard from somewhere that forum signatures in non-IM niches can be quite responsive. I did notice that the use of the signature feature as a marketing tool was quite underused in a weight-loss forum once (which I was reading during one of my half-assed attempts to get fit, haha!)

Forum signatures are mainly for increasing backlinks to your website
The more backlinks the higher your page will rank in the search engines

I agree with aaaa33030, It's not always about the offer you have in your site, but its more of increasing our page rank in search engines. Our signature is a permanent backlink.

Forum signatures are actually a pretty bad source of backlinks. In fact, I think the opposite of what "aaaa" says. Don't look at your sig as a way to build backlinks. Look at it as a way to drive VERY targeted traffic to your site. The traffic may not be huge, but it's incredibly targeted since people are specifically interested in what you are offering. Plus, if you're a helpful poster, your trust factor is usually a bit higher. Which definitely goes a long way.

      Really?

I'm trying to help unwell Warriors in mine and I want people clicking on them, they're not there for back linking their sites!

Respectfully, you want people to click on your signature primarily, any backlink advantage should be secondary surely? Especially if you sell IM stuff, this is an IM forum after all. I mean your target market are here, you're right in front of them and you're only thinking about backlinks.

Sorry, that just doesn't make sense. If I sold dog stuff and I was on a dog forum, surely I'd be missing something if the only use for that forum I could see, was backlinks? Think about it, your target market is here and all you're thinking about is getting to the top of Google, so people go to your site, even though they're here already and so are you.

Of course if you were just selling cars in your signature, then it would only be for backlinks. Unless someone fancied buying a car while they were here.

Here's a slightly different take on the question...

I don't sell anything in my sig. Heck, I don't even link to anything.

But judging from the number of positive comments and PMs I get, I'm creating some favorable impressions and generating some goodwill. I'm getting positive attention.

In my mind, that makes my sig here quite useful and valuable...

Too useful! I got more private clients to my site from my sig than through any other channel. In fact, I recently had to stop taking new clients because I couldn't handle any more work. WF is hands-down the best marketing tool for service providers online, in my opinion.

John's reply reminded me of the discussion in this thread:
          http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...ake-money.html

If you want to understand MARKETING better (not just the immediate "usefulness" of something done in this realm) - I suggest reading that thread and paying attention to those that, unlike the OP over there, understand the basics

      Hi,

I do get some click thrus (several a week) and have received good leads and business from it. I wouldn't depend on the signature line to be your business' lifeline tho.

I am actually considering doing the yearly upgrade so I can have a colorful, banner-style signature.

All in all, it's free to put a basic signature on your posts.

There are two main forms of signatures on forums.

    1. A whole bunch a keywords with links to their corresponding site.

    2. Promoting a particular site or service.

people are already in the losers seat when they start to think like that, they are controlled by or posting for all of the wrong reasons, and because of that, arse over tit you will go.

put your Sig in place then forget about it 100%, interact and help where you can with no thought of your Sig even being there and you may even find it will work for you as you move forward.

You misunderstand me, I wouldn't dream of posting garbage to get more posts out there and more eyeballs on my signature. It's not what I'm about - was just interested in seeing if there was any kind of correllation, thats all.

The way I see it is that, any clicks I get from my signature (unless I go down the John McCabe route) will be more of a bonus than a primary traffic source - I'm just interested in seeing how others are doing

I have got sales from people doing searches, finding my posts, liking what I had to say (I hope), clicking on my sig and then buying.

I just joined another form about 7 days ago that is pertinent to what I promote in my sig: I made 2 sales already!

A signature is just another way of promoting your business and shouldn't be overlooked.

My signatures in other forums have certainly generated me a decent amount of business, have just started using a signature on the Warrior Forum and im hoping it will pay off the same as the others! I may consider using an Image instead of text, but i am going to see how it goes first. The main thing to remeber is if you are trying to promote something through your signature, dont actually try and promote it. Just put something simple, and then make relavant comments on popular threads. Add to the conversation

I've had a signature for a while now and every time I post I usually get a few click-throughs. I don't post often though so its not much. I do think the more you post, the more value you provide, and the more you strive to become a member of the community here the better chance you have to get a lot of traffic from a sig. link.

I occasionally still get people contacting me saying they saw my ad on the forum. It was originally going to be for a week or so during the holidays to help out some Warrior members, and I think it fell off the first page in the Warriors For Hire forum pretty fast. So I can only think these people contacting me must be doing it from the link in my sig, as my ad is probably on page 30 or something by now. It's actually kind of cool finding the odd email about the ad.

      OK

      Reach for the puke bag!!

I dont have a sig, because i feel its something you should earn. I know, its old fashioned, and i could have had a multitude of sigs by now if i had wanted to, BUT, i wanted to contribute first, in whatever way i could. I wanted to be a part of the forum rather than the forum being a part of a bigger picture for me.

It seems to me that a sig is like an erection, the more you promise to give, the better performer you are supposed to be.... but its all hype.... and you fail miserably!!!

I would NEVER, show on here, proof of income, because no one would believe it.... anyway. Just like the "ill show you how to make $35,000 a month" merchants...... BUT, i could produce to you hand written letters from clients or acquaintances that will profess to me being one of the most honest people they know.

Either way, i know the sig is a privilege, not a right..... so i would never abuse it with "let me show you how to make gazillions every hour", because i bet there is no one here that can live up to that hype. I dont recall seeing any post from any member validating the original claim of any seller on here.

So to the OP........ if you don't respect the sig, it wont do anything for you. But if you can really add value..... then maybe.... just maybe, it could be one of the best elements of online marketing you have available to you. Its like being in the theatre, treat your audience with respect, give them more than what they paid to come and watch and they will love you, adore you and request an encore.

Be a knob.... and its game over!!!

      Peace

      GW

PS I ask for forgiveness from anyone that thinks im a knob :-)
