Authority Sites - what point do most switch from creating pages - to creating posts

I have read all over the place that posts rank better than pages, which makes sense in correlation of the idea that Google loves fresh, blog style content.

I am also aware that there is one definite benefit to creating posts, and that is the slight ranking boosts that are received for the content being fresh.

-----------

I guess what I am saying is I see the benefits of posts, and what they are intended to be used for. However, my understanding of the benefits of pages / what they are intended to be used for is a little less clear.

In the situation of creating an authority site, where a lot of topics will be covered, how many of your broad phrase should be pages, and how many should be posts?

Example:

My keyword is clothes.

My site would have a my nav menu with the sub categories being pants, shirts, mens, womens, shoes, socks, and hats

but individual manufacturers are ALSO very important

should those be posts, or pages?

Why so?

  • I thought about it, and the post boost would probably work against you in the long run if they prefer "fresh" content..

    Ahh man.

I really am not sure here....

I can only tell you what I do...

The only thing I use pages for are administration and organization. By administration, I mean things like the privacy policy, terms of use, etc. One exception would be a semi-static home page. It presents content I want every visitor to the site to see when they hit the home page.

By organization, I mean things like opt-in pages, specialized landing pages, and so on.

One way to do what I think you want to do would be to tag your posts with the manufacturer, designer, etc. Then create landing pages that organize the tags.

Using your clothing example, say you had a category for 'jeans'. Under that category you had 3 posts for Levis, 4 for Lee, and 1 for Oshkosh.

On the specialized 'Manufacturer' tag page, it would look something like:

      Lee
      Lee1
      Lee2
      Lee3
      Lee4

      Levi
      Levi1
      Levi2
      Levi3

      Oshkosh
      Oshkosh1

Under each header would be links to the posts tagged with that manufacturer.

It takes a little hacking with page templates, but you only have to do it once. And as long as you stay consistent with your tagging, it will update automatically.

    You are TOTALLY over-thinking this.

The main difference between posts and pages is that (with most themes) you can easily use pages within a menu, or you can make them static. This is why i USUALLY use pages for "secondary" content like terms, contact us and similar.

The main difference with POSTS is that you can better interlink them and they support categories and tags (Tags can be VERY powerful!) - and i am not sure now, but i think the post/ping in wordpress only happens with posts but not pages.

So..i would not overthink this, you can do it simply like i do, use pages for..well..your pages like contact, terms etc..and all the rest is POSTS. (Exception, if you really need a static front page and cant do this with a post then you can use a page as a static front page).

And to answer your question more directly, this is NOT a question about posts/pages (see the other replies) but rather your site's structure like categories/tags.

You COULD now make categories starting with the manufacturers then sub-cats with pants, skirts etc... (Or the other way round and then sub-categories with manufacturers)..whatever is best for you.

And then you could also tag the individual product pages with attributes, like color, material...etc..

As a rule: Do it like you think it would be BEST and wiuld make most sense for the customer! Look at your categories and how you want to tag your products. Wordpress is a CMS (Content Management System), don't forget this! And if you do it in a good matter then Google will also reward this, rest assured!

I think the best way to get an answer to your question is to google site related to your keyword and you see how the best in that niche is doing and you can use that on your site with some to have an edge.

As GeorgR says, your over thinking.

Spiders dont actually know what is a page or a post. After all, they can look 100% the same depending on your theme.

    Just structure your site logically.
And dont forget category 'pages' can have great value - use either the category description or sticky a post in each.
