    Funny, I still have a place on ning. However, my traffic from there is like zero. Sadly, ning cost some money. A few die hard members told me to keep it up. Frankly, most people are on Face Book now. Also, take a very long look at Google Circles, that is a hot new one.

    One way that I have used is to create a collaboration site using Google sites. It is free to use and can be as sophisticated as you want. You can store files and so on.

    There are several if you do a search for open source social networks. I couldn't provide a link to a list as I just started posting here.
