Does it hurt my site to post an article that I already have on my site to an article directory?

Would this hurt my site or is this what most of you do?

    If it has already been indexed by Google on your site go ahead and submit it to an article directory, it will help rather than hurt your site.

    I use wordpress to build my sites. So its easy to post an article on my sites and then go to the sitemap plugin and update. I still give it a while to make sure its indexed but doesnt hurt me.
