Newbie needs a mentor

I am relatively new to IM. In every business I have ever been involved with I have always sought out a mentor and I don't want this to be any different.

I tried to tackle it on my own for a few months, but info overload, people just trying to make a quick sale, and a lot of dead ends have left me frustrated.

What is the easiest way to find a mentor? My challenge is finding somebody who truly knows what they are doing and me being so new I can't pm anyone.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

if you have a much budget you can search some of internet top guru. contact them and ask for coaching.

if you have a little budget you can star search who is top selling in this forum and ask coaching.. for me coaching is the best.. because you can learn much from them who already succed..

the best way is you ask to coach, or if you want free you can ask to be voluenter in his next product. you will do anything he/she ask for free so that is where you learn..

You could do a search in the WSO section, just make sure to read all the comments and PM all the people who used that particular mentoring program as they'll give you the REAL DEAL where the mentoring works or not.

    Hope this helps

    Stlmrk,

    You need to take action!

If I were you I would get started ASAP without a mentor....whilst you look for one.

Otherwise you will never get started using the fact that you cannot find a mentor as an excuse.

Take action, learn the ropes as you go along....and you may find that you don't really need a mentor.

You might want to consider these questions before approaching a mentor...

What do you want to achieve by having a mentor?
How do you think the mentor will help you achieve those goals?
How will you ensure you are taking action that helps you achieve those goals?

    Kind regards

    Chris

Before you seek out a mentor, what are you willing to offer? This is really important if you cannot really afford to pay thousands for coaching. Most people who are successful on the internet are busy and if you want them to take time out of their busy schedules to help you out, you need to be willing to offer a quality service in return.

I agree that a mentor does help. When I started, I was searching around blind, not really knowing what to do. I bought into alot of products and lost alot of money. After about a year, I stopped jumping from one thing to another and looked for someone to give me step by step instructions. I did find it through CF. I think he is wonderful!!!

Considering that you mentioned information overload, it appears that you've read a lot on different topics.
    A mentor would be good if you can find one, but most of them wont give you a step by step guide. What you need to do is, look into what you are good in or what you like;
take a main topic PPC, Affiliate marketing, other...; pick a method and do it to your best; give time, and either enhance it or go with a new one.
This also applies to mentors, pick a reputable one, follow his guide to your best.

The main keywords here are Action and Time!

    Best of Luck

We all need a mentor! I can still remember myself asking for a mentor a couple of years back and no-one actually replied to that message. So I ventured the road of cold hard trial and error, best learning school IMO.

You could look for a mentor that really takes it up close and personal, but I doubt you could find any, and if you do, be prepared to pay the jackpot. You should just follow some more experienced marketers here on this forum and see what they do. Their actions reflect the best teachings to new marketers.

    Cheers,

    Steven

Before you pick a mentor or coach (they are two different things), you need to figure out which type of business model you want to do. No point hiring someone to teach you how to create info products if their expertise is in Adsense or Amazon.

If you've already gone through a lot of information, you should have some idea of what the different business models are. Pick one that sounds like you'd be best at, taking your own skills into account. Focus on that one to start with.

There are plenty of coaching membership sites and programs that will walk you through step by step. Once example is Nicheology. There is a ton of training on there, starting from the basics.

If you're not sure what you want to do, just pick one and get a step by step guide. Nothing too expensive. Dive in and get started. You'll see where you need help pretty quickly.

As for coach vs. mentor. Coaches are usually people you hire to help you improve your performance or learn something specific. That's what it sounds like you need. Mentors are people that give you more general guidance and are not usually paid. As you build your business and meet more people, you might find someone that you connect with who would want to be your mentor.

    Good luck!

Although you have the best mentor on the world but if you don't do action and practice, practice ,practice also useless.

What ever good for me maybe not good for you ! But to have mentor is very good step, way to minimize mistakes. Most people are busy ( the first reason that you will get ) sorry I am busy ( they are realy busy ).

Overload of information (the worse things).
what you know now, just more focus in it. time will bring you there !

Make sure you're ready for mentoring! If you're a total newbie, chances are, you aren't. If you're even able to afford any type of mentoring as a newbie, you won't get as much out of it as you could otherwise if you know yourself better and what areas of IM you want to pursue.

It takes time to figure out what area of IM you want to pursue, who the players are in that area, and which one is right for you. Many people offer similar info, but not all people will resonate with your personally. You need to find someone you "click" with to get the most out of it.

You can use a person, a book, an information product, an internship or a job, -- or a forum -- as your mentor. People typically charge more for their personal time/attention than they will for an information product or a book. And one-on-one coaching typically costs A LOT more than group coaching.

One of my mentors HIGHLY recommends investing most of your money in mentoring and then building the actual business and marketing on a shoestring. This is EXCELLENT advice.

However, if you're broke, you probably can't afford any group coaching program, much less one-on-one coaching.

That's ok. First, you need to research and "find" yourself online. That is, become knowledgeable enough that you KNOW what you want to do online. Do your homework. Search this forum. Read books. Buy courses.

Then apply what you've learned. It's ok if it doesn't work the first time. We all have to start somewhere. And believe me, you'll get a LOT more out of the coaching/mentoring if you 1) KNOW exactly what area of IM you want to pursue and what you want to get out of the coaching and 2) if you already have some experience under your belt.

Plus, it's less costly to invest in some IM products (comprehensive courses, not $5 ebooks), than hiring a mentor right out of the gate.

I'm very much a DIY kind of person and much preferred buying courses and studying on my own than buying actual coaching. I invested a lot of time and money over about 7 years (or more) learning, dabbling in IM, making some money, and deciding exactly what I wanted to do online. In that time, I also made a very short list of people I'd discovered who I trusted: people I buy from, listen to, trust and can recommend. (Having such a list of people will save you a LOT of time and headaches!)

Since I'm a DIY kind of person, I always viewed high-level, expensive coaching/mentoring programs a bit skeptically. I believe that mentoring from the right person is very valuable. But why should I pay $3,000 (or more) to be mentored when I can buy a course for $1,000 (or less) and teach myself the same thing????

So now I'm very knowledgeable about IM, with some experience to boot. So I was ready to jump into my first-ever coaching/mentoring opportunity when it dropped into my lap in 2010 after I lost my job.

If I hadn't already done so much research or if I wasn't CRYSTAL CLEAR about what I wanted and expected out of it, I would never have done it. But she was the perfect mentor and the timing was perfect. (Incredible, really.) I'd NEVER invested so much money at once ($3,000), but it was worth it's weight in gold. And I was ready for it.

I just signed up to mentor with her again this year to the tune of $7K. This time, the coaching program includes 1-on-1 mentoring, PLUS group coaching, hence, the higher price. I fly to TX this coming Monday for our half-day 1-on-1 session and I'm SOOO excited about it!

I've been VERY happy with my mentor's guidance, THRILLED with what I learned and the world of possibilities she opened up, not to mention the emotional support she lent and her belief in all of her clients (me included).

I love her personality and have a huge respect for her personally, as well as professionally. She models my idea of what a woman in business should be: super business savvy, yet totally feminine. She is a lovely, lovely lady.

Once you know what area of IM you want to pursue, look to see who the players are in that field. Subscribe to their e-zines. Buy their courses and e-books. You'll quickly get a feel for those who are genuine.

Then find someone who's where you want to be, who has the RESULTS that you want to achieve, and hire them.

      WHEN you're ready for it.

      Hope that helps!

If you're struggling to figure out what you want to do online, remember:

Clarity is a HUGE part of IM success.

IM is actually pretty simple: you can sell only one of two things:

        1. Products
        2. Services

        That's it!

And selling products or services online happens in the same basic way for everyone, no matter what they're selling:

        Traffic > Opt-in page > Autoresponder series (or e-zine) > Sales page

That's it! It's just that simple. (We IMers tend to overcomplicate things.)

But no matter what your niche is, or whether you're selling a product or a service, do you know what your business model is?

A business model is the framework or skeleton of your business. Essentially there are three types of online business models:

        1. Membership-based model

A membership-based business model allows you to build a community of people (your members) who are as passionate about your subject as you are. Your membership fees can be monthly or annual, but either way, you're building recurring, passive income.

There are a lot of resources and information out there to help you build a membership-based business if you're interested in doing this.

        2. Product-based model

Selling products allows you to maximize your time and effort by selling items over and over again. This can be hard goods or it can be information products. Information marketing is it's own business model under the product-based model. Information marketing allows you to take your brain to the bank by creating a product ONCE based on what you know and selling it over and over again.

I see someone has already recommended affiliate marketing. You can choose to market either products or services as an affiliate.

        3. Service-based model

Selling services can be great for 1) generating quick cash (as in the case of article writing or video producing) and 2) establishing your expertise and getting testimonials.

However, in the long run, your goal should be to offer services at a PREMIUM. The biggest advantage of IM is LEVERAGE. You're able to leverage your time, money and expertise exponentially online. We all have just 24 hours each day. Time to get ruthless about what you expect for those hours you spend in IM each day. Expect more of yourself and more from your business friends, clients, partners, etc.

What results are you getting for those hours you spend online each day? Ultimately, your services should be at the bottom of your funnel and cost the most since they involve your time and personal attention. (We all have a limited amount of time each day.)

The fun (and confusion) comes in with all of the endless mix-and-match possibilities of the above models. If you're just starting or still struggling to make money, keep it simple:

        Pick just ONE!

        1. Pick ONE niche. (Something you're interested in and know something about.)

        2. Pick ONE target market for your product or service. (Who will buy what you're offering? The more specific you are, the more you narrow it down, the more successful you'll be.)

        3. Pick ONE business model.

Now that you're clear about what business you're in, FOCUS! (And stop buying any info not related to your niche and target market, period!)

        F -- Follow
        O -- One
        C -- Course
        U -- Until
        S -- Successful

And remember: build a list, Build a List, BUILD A LIST!

In IM, it's easy to put the cart before the horse. Take a deep breath, step back and consider what type of business you're REALLY want. Don't worry about getting traffic or buying that expensive traffic product until you know 1) what your business model is, 2) what niche you're in and 3) WHO your target market is!

Successful business people will tell you that MARKETING is more than half the effort that's needed for success anyway. So pick a niche, target market and business model. Then spend most of your time and effort marketing it.

If you DON'T have a solid plan or system, THAT'S when it's hard. A good system will shave YEARS (and save you big $$$) off of your learning curve

That's why I recommend investing in at least one good, comprehensive IM course (or mentor who will give you such a system) instead of jumping from one $37 e-book to the next. A lot of people here complain about not being able to make any money. But neither are they willing to invest in their business. (Buying a random bunch of $37 e-books doesn't count.)

The best thing I ever did was invest in a comprehensive IM course aimed at REAL business owners, not just other IM wannabes. Yes it was $1500. (Now it's only $997. :p) But it was truly some of the best A-Z IM info I ever bought. Everything else I've learned (from the $37 e-books) since has simply been plugged into this system.

Get a solid plan or system and then work the plan!

        Hope this helps!

It's a shame to see so many people offering coaching services that aren't qualified...that being said, if you are serious about working online, you need to do more research yourself. I'm sure there are some fantastic courses out there, pick one, focus on it and just continue to research your niche. It's going to take time, but give yourself a chance. When the student is ready the teacher will come.

Realistically you can get coaching for $20 a day, or $1000 a day.

But both mean nothing if you do not take action on the info provided. We do have some students who have gone on to massive things, but then we have seen people wasit time, and do nothing with the coaching.

Do not be one of these people. Get up off your butt, do not say you will get off your butt, actually get off you butt and do things. Taking action is key and will get you from where you are now, to where you want to be.

Good luck and wish you the best year in 2012 yet.

Most of the people that i see who wants a mentor for free don't follow and listen to the advice given. They try one technique, it brings mediocre results, and they quit claiming that free marketing doesn't work. So if you're willing to get a mentor, you have to be willing to do the necessary hard, long work that is required.
