I wonder if anyone has consciously tried to write an article which debunks a myth, and made it go viral.

On most topics of debate, there is usually many people on both sides of the argument.

Have you ever seen an article get linked to hundreds of times?

Usually when someone reads a great article which debunks a myth, they will blast it about a forum they post on. If there is ever an argument which comes up often, people will link to this article.

Imagine the amount of people posting this article all over forums, or even social media sites.

Not only will people find your article on the search engines, but it will go completely viral and be talked about for years.

Seems to me like an amazing traffic method, IF, you can produce one of these articles.

Has anyone ever done this?

I haven't done it personally but it's a great method. Essentially what you're talking about is creating link bait. If you're looking for tips type "link bait" into Google.

Yes I have used link baiting before. It can be fun and you can do it in a nice way or really try to make alot of people mad. I use it with Twitter and Facebook alot. Takes a lot less work that way.

You can do it so its fun though and doesn't offend too many people but if people have a difference of opinion then some of them just get way too mad.

The way I see it when people email me something derogatory on something I put out or said, I'm doing something right.

This sounds like a great method but I havent tried it personally. Theory-wise, sounds like it could work.

Maybe I will try doing one!

All you need is a 'known' myth and give your personal opinion mixed with some science based articles, so write up a nice essay and promote it

It will go viral when the myth is popular enough or when it's a the news (trending). Example: 'Couple saw Jesus In Coffee Mug When Returned From Church' Something like this was all-over the news for some time and it even reached Europe. So if you see something like this on the mainstream channels you should immediately debunk the whole story and send your link towards the most important social hubs (my point of view); Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, StumbleUpOn

Tried this in the past and didn't test it with affiliate offers or so, but did got 10k additional unique hits in one day. Here is the post I am talking about, the blog is a bit dead now; Astronauts Came Forth With The Truth! So Why Are We Still Watching The Skies? | RecognizeReality I did not however debunked the thing but left the opinion in the middle.

Be wary of those pesky people that just steal your posts/articles and trying to get that viral with links aimed to their websites. Hope I helped you out here in someway
