New take on a dating website -share your oppinion!

Hi Warriors!
So I've been brainstorming a bit lately, and I'd love to share my ideas with you.
Okay so here goes:
Basically, online dating is very hot in my country (and probably the rest of the world too).
So I thought about how to create some sort of dating website with a twist. The twist should be, that it's video based. Meaning, that each member has the possibility (and should) create a brief introduction video of themselves. I'm positive that it will generate a much more real and genuine connection to a person, if you see them on a video rather than a profile picture.

Target group: "Younger" people (40 max) as SOME technical knowledge is required (like recording a video and uploading it). Not saying people above 40 isn't able to do this, but in general I think the idea of video presenting yourself appeals more to younger/trendy people.

My concerns: People will be too shy to present themselves on camera on a date site? Hopefully I'm wrong on this one, just a thought/concern I've got.

The cost to develop it (luckily I have a tech friend who could probably code it and team up with).*

The video concept may not be entirely new in your country, but it is in mine. Obviously already existing dating websites provide the opportunity to upload videos as some extra feature. The MAIN feature on my website should be the video introduction of a member (perhaps rewarding each profile with a video with 1-month extra subscription time or something).

Man, it is a good idea but you do know its been done plenty of times, the leader in it is probally vdateonline.com

I used to cover the dating niche a while back, still have alot of articles out and such. I still make some money. I just felt it was more beneficial to move on, Did not really like it anyways.

One thing you need to remember is once you get some members your bandwidth is going to hit the roof. Lots of Bandwidth = lots of dollars

I like the idea of something new - and it is a crowded market space. From my perspective, the biggest challenge with online dating sites is the apprehension and vulnerability felt on the first meeting.

I know from a logical perspective, the person looking online probably is as likely to be an axe murderer as someone met, say in a bar, cafe, or wherever... but it feels different when its facilitated through a website. Not sure if all women feel like this - but I've heard from numerous people that they do.

If something could be done to ease these types of fears... it may be a unique enough value proposition to be able to compete against the larger sites.

@Blogdog Haha I hope not either

@Hustlinsmoke Yeah I know that's been done before, however in my country it haven't. The video feature is more of a "bonus" thing on dating websites at the moment. The aim for the site I'm thinking about would be, to focus primarily on the video presentation of each user. Great note about the bandwidth! I guess that's definetely something to take in to consideration. However if there's a lot of traffic usage, there's also a lot of users = $$

@Sara Nightingale Sure, the dating niche is very very competitive. But getting a small slice of it, is enough I think. I just basically think some people are fed up, with the same dating websites over and over - here I hope the video approach could appeal to some of these people.

@Debml Hm, I think the whole "stranger" thing behind the screen is getting much less thoughts the recent years. Some websites even validate their members through their phone or some other identification. But it's something to take into consideration too for sure.

that is a very good idea. I would also suggest you to provide some monthly call credits to your members with which they can talk to other users of your site via phone. It will give a healthy boost to your website.
