Get Your $10 Laptops!

Hey Warriors,

How many of you would make the switch to a laptop if they were $10 each?

Well, that may be something you can consider in the very near future as
there is a company in India that is about to release them.

FOXNews.com - India Promises to Unveil $10 Laptop - Science News | Science & Technology | Technology News

What will this mean to the IM field if virtually everyone in the world
will soon be able to get online?

$10 for the laptop and $200 for the Windows license!

I would imagine they will be installing some kind of Linux operating system.

It would be great if they could pull it off.

I honestly can't see it working though.

Surely labour and parts would add up to more than $10?

I can see the next couple headlines:

"India supplies the world with laptops made by children in sweat shops"

"Glut of $10 laptops pile up in landfills"

"$10 laptops made of balsa wood burst into flames upon over use"

Are they going to grow these things in trees?

It probably costs less then 2 bucks for the parts.

Silicon and metal are not expensive. The prices only go up purely for profits sake and perceived value.

Its supply and demand. When supply overwhelms demand, the price can plummet to almost nothing and still profit.

They aren't building these things out of diamonds and platinum, you know.

    Duh.

You need some serious schooling in Economics...

Specifically in the price of commodities and metals.

Then study microchip design and development.

Did I mention energy and transportation costs?

Also, india & indonesia are some of the most resource rich countries on the planet.

They're literally tripping over materials to build things with, and they are swarmed with people who will work for next to nothing.

Jesus, if they start selling laptops at $10... WOW!

You know people are going to be buying them, then selling them to people who "don't know" for like $40-$100. LOL. It WILL happen, I'd put my life on it.

For many years I've thought that if Microsoft was truly intelligent, they'd manufacture pcs and laptops and just give them away. The money would be in the increased number of average Joe's who couldn't otherwise afford a pc or laptop buying MS software...

Same with cell phone companies. Give the phones away, as long as you sign up for a two-year agreement with AT&T, for example.

What if oil companies literally gave away cheap cars, long as you signed up for a two year agreement to only buy gas from their stations? (Don't know how they'd be able to enforce that, but you get the idea.)

In a way it's good if they do that. They would have a lot more customers using their products. (And a lot more people would understand what we are talking about when speaking of terabytes, uploading, etc.)

But the flip side is if they actually did that, imagine the traffic volume. Servers would be stressed to the max. It'd become a lot harder to find a decent domain name still available. And with even more billions of people being online, the governments would really push to tax the crap out of anything sold over the internet. Not good for any of us.

I'm sure MS would love to put an end to Linux. And I'm sure MS would figure out a way to make none of their programs work in these $10 laptops, simply because they are not that smart. Or they have contracts with the computer companies (Dell, Gateway, etc.) to work with them to keep screwing the public with over-priced hardware.

Either way, I don't think anyone will see a new laptop for less than $100 anytime soon. Not if MS and the computer manufacturers have anything to say about it.

They already do - sort of: Here, you can get an iPhone for €50, if you sign up for a 12-month minimum contract, or opt for a pay-as-you-go deal and pay €500 for it instead.

      Tommy.

P.S. - Does anyone else remember the "Phone Card Phone" that was talked about years ago? A disposable mobile phone literally 'printed' onto paper... it sounded pretty cool; I wonder what happened to it.

$10 laptop? If I remebered correctly, several years ago, india had the plan for $100 laptop, but it did not succeed. now $10?

well, last week, I bought a laptop for my son from toyrus, costed me $25, and it was on sale, 50% off. it has a 3.5' (or maybe 4') screen, it has a keyboard for 0-9,a-z, and it has 30 games for learning numbers and symbols. If this is available for $10, I think it is a great deal for young children.

If they do come out with it, I'll take three or four, thank you. I've always wanted to make a youtube video of me attacking a perfectly good laptop with a baseball bat...

And think of the companies buying them to give to their employees as prizes for top production or employee of the month!

I can hear it now, "I bust my a** and this is what I get?! I QUIT!!!"

Hard to say if this will ever come about, but even at $50 each, that
would put a ton more people in the game.

I got a free laptop with my last mobile phone contract...!!

You won't get a bare bones system for $10. It will be hounding you for trials left right and centre.

Some people will get good use of the $10 laptop but the typical family will end up being annoyed and caving in on all the latest offers jumping up in front of them...!!!!!!!

I still have to pay $45 a month for the contract..

Christ, this sounds more like the end of the Internet to me...

You think we have a spam and splog problem NOW? Jesus, the shit you are gonna have to wade through would be incredible if this comes to pass.

And if it does, I'm gonna go back to work as an electrician- because every idiot in the world is gonna think he can make a mil online with his new laptop and there won't be anyone left to make sure it'll charge when you plug the damn thing in.

Hell, I'll be able to charge more an hour than my lawyers do!

That's ridiculous, if the laptop is $10 then the specs on that thing must be bare minimum, and I mean like 10 GB of memory and 256 mb of ram or something absolutely pathetic like that. I don't see how $10 could get you anything decent, I'd rather spend $500 and get a nice running laptop.

Same here, spend $500, you pay for what you get, but in India people unfortunatley afford a $500 laptop,

You guys do realize these are manufactured mostly for little kids for educational purposes? This is actually a really good thing for kids that aren't able to afford a computer to learn how to use them. That is very important for many jobs they will be going after later in life.

With India being 11 or 12 hours ahead of me here, it's now after

Has anyone heard anything more on this, have they made the

AKA... Useless for any real purpose.

I bought my boy a computer like that for Xmas, complete with a greyscale '80's era lcd screen and blinking lights too! cool... :p

Calling something like this "computing", is like building two cups and a string and calling it "mobile communication".

I don't think you could even build in the WiFi capability for $10, and even a $1000 laptop is almost worthless without internet access.

If the cost structure really would be that low (unrealistic, just from the operating system standpoint alone), it could be a boon to internet marketers as the less technically savvy would come online in droves.
