      Yeah, maybe it's total opens rather than uniques.

      Only uniques matters really.

    I think it is total opens. Mine often does the same thing. Pain in the butt when you want to track things.

    If they're tracking with images, and the recipient is using a program like Mac that shows the email without actually opening it in another pane/window, then every time someone scrolls through their list of emails and the image is loaded, you're going to see that number go up.

    Open Rates are good to track.

    The more important metric, though, is your click-through rate. That's where your money comes from.

    Yes, it must be people opening multiple times or it's registering as such somehow like Brian said. That always happens some, but I've never seen it to this extent.

    Can't you delve further into the statistics to see who is registering as having actually opened the email? I think it may show how many times for each too.

    While open rates aren't all that reliable, I think it's helpful to track them to see changes over time. As long as you're using the same email service (so it's consistently tracking opens the same way), relative increases and decreases are good to know.
