How I made $750 for one hour's work and here's the secret

I really dislike unrepresentative headlines. I did make $750 for one hour's work. The secret is plain and simple. I wrote an article for a hard copy publication. It took me an hour.

Here are more examples

Make $3,467 with just one email - what they don't tell you is that the email was sent to a list of over 100,000 subscribers and was in a hot niche.

Earn a full time income by blogging - It took them over a year to get to that full time income which of course they don't divulge.

Take home $1000 every day in profits - Never mind you have to spend $5000 in Ads every day as well.

And of course it's not just in IM:

Lose 10 pounds of ugly fat in one week - The person losing that much fat weighed 300 pounds to begin with. And has anyone ever seen 'pretty' fat?

Save hundreds of dollars on your grocery bill - Stop eating.

What are some of your favorite headlines that grab and mislead?

Dee

So true. Headlines sell hope. It's very rare that you see a headline isn't somehow hyped up. Depends on the product though.

I always wondered about those guru claims of XXXX per day. Anyone can make huge amounts of money if you spend enough on Adwords. Most sales letters always seem to leave out a simple phrase..."net" profit.

    Dee.... thanks for your post.

I really hate those people who post topics with such headlines! I personally think you cannot make alot of money without putting so much efforts and work hard on it...

I think it would better to say "I made $750 within an hour, but it was a real challenge and not easy at all!"

BTW, why do you have the same photo on all your products/sites?
I like it much, but don't you think you should have different photos on each product? Just unsure.. what do you think?

Very amusing! I'm going to look into becoming a professional writer for hard copy publications, I would gladly work for a few hours to make $750... You are absolutely right in regard to those spammy headlines, people would get more traffic if they toned down their titles a bit.. The natural pitch is the easiest one to convert...
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[481845].message }}
  • Profile picture of the author teazers4
Agreed, natural would be easier to convert, the trick is getting them to click the title with the hook!

Tricky game but if you could find the right balance you'd be a....well.....a.....Guru.

    Did I just say that?

I got around a dozen emails with this headline recently: "61,041 dollars in 24 hours with Free Traffic?"

I opened the first email thinking that this was going to be awesome. Oh, 6 easy payments of $249. Or a one-time $1249. And there were "upgrades".

Now I'm not saying the product sucks, because it's from a well-known marketer and I know the product kicks ass, but I wish the headline was "Expensive coaching will teach you everything there is to know about free traffic generation" or something like that.

        You convinced me then

However some people prefer to see different photos on different products, I think they feel more confident about purchasing the new products if they already purchased another one. Possibly becausey they think the book/product will be similar to the old one. Not really sure so you better make a research about that... But again don't get it personal I like your photo :-)

One of the reasons I posted this is because I have a report called Convert Your Words to Cash. Someone suggested it would sell better if it was titled something like Make $750 by Writing Just One Article in One Hour. They said that it would be honest because I had actually done it.

In this case it didn't seem right. I got the assignment for the article because of my experience and background. Someone else wouldn't have.

Think of it as branding. The customer who sees the same photo on multiple sites/products quickly registers whatever association they have with this image. So perhaps they think, "Ahh, it's Dee! I love her stuff!"

Now what if you have different photos? Then the prospect has to take time to process the photo in their minds. Maybe they'll connect it as being the same person. Maybe they won't.

          Think of it this way...

Does Nike put slightly different versions of their logo on their different products and sites? Nope. Because that would confuse people. Their goal is to build their brand and get their swoosh logo recognized instantly (and associated with some positive emotion). Indeed, companies spend a lot of money to build brand recognition -- they sure wouldn't mess that up by putting different logos on their different products.

Same with Dee. She's building recognition.

          Cheers,

To add on what Becky has mentioned,
it is ideal that you put the same avatar in

    Hey Dee,

    I agree with you 110%...

The problem is that most of these "gurus" DO NOT base their headlines nor salescopy on the actual product but they DO base it on "what the market wants to hear", which is usually the opposite of what they are selling...

    MY BIGGEST BEEF...

The headlines IMPLY that you can make money "even if you are a lazy bum" and then these "gurus" will say things like "no one makes it in this industry because they don't TAKE ACTION or SPEND THE TIME"...

EVEN THOUGH THATS EXACTLY WHAT THEY IMPLY IN THEIR SALESLETTERS!

Its not that people are lazy, but they have kids, are busy and are short for time and they blow $1-5k on a course that requires a huge amount of 2 things they were promised NOT to need...

A Huge Amount OF TIME & MONEY!

Yes I know people should expect to spend time & money but when you have a "Master Copywriter" hitting your mental triggers making you believe you can do it with "No Money & 1 Hour"... Its Not Your Fault

And this ruins the way we are all perceived by "normal people" and why we all get that "look" from our family members when we tell them what we do for a living!

And the worst part is when I actually have a "Huge Promise" (that I CAN deliver on) I CAN NOT state that because then I just look like one of these dudes with "crap in a box" and a "great copywriter"!

I thought this what marketing is about? How many people are selling Clickbank products just because they are popular but don't know anything about the product itself. Unless you actually buy the product and try it yourself you would not know if it works but you are still trying to sell it. No different in my opinion to trying to sell a get rich quick scheme.

I am working on branding. I do use the same avatar, my photo, on all the forums I belong to, with the exception of one. I had a little "Power Packed" icon made as well. Get it. Power is my last name so "Power Packed."

IM is full of hype and there are lots of people selling products strictly to make a buck. They might be selling "Natural Cures for Sinus Infection" and not realize that some of the natural cures are dangerous. Natural maybe, but ineffective and dangerous. What they're looking for is that desperate buyer whose head is throbbing who needs immediate relief.

There is an important difference IMHO. The CREATOR of the product knows what he/she is selling -- but as affiliate you often go by indirect information:

      - how well is it selling?
      - are there many refunds?

And btw - compare this to an ordinary offline supermarket. The retailers can't possibly know everything about all the products they're selling. But if they get complaints on a product they realize it is not a good idea to sell it.

the things is that with many intelligent people, you begin to ignore the hype. I do for sure!
I look at a sales page and if I see it is a loooong scrolling one full of hype, tripe, and what have you...I'm gone!
Same with headlines. I usually think.."yeah , right"
        and they've lost me.

TV ads that insult my intelligence - many geared to women, in particular bug the crap out of me!

Or I walk into a store and the sales person (working on commission) pounces on me before I'm even in the door..with "May I help you". I tell them "when I am ready to ask for your help I will, trust me" but really in my mind, they've lost the sale...because they have not learned one important marketing technique: how to read people. For crying out loud let the customer get in the door, look around for a while, and then go up and say something like, "Is there something in particular you are looking for?" Notice that is not a yes or no question? Many marketers don't know how to engage a customer properly. Many marketers focus on making money and not on how their product or service benefits the potential buyer. So they resort to hype to try and lure people into buying their crap.

I guess hype sells, but it doesn't do anything for me. I buy something only if I can clearly see a benefit to it or sometimes, not often, it is an impulse buy.

Despite the fact that there are so many misleading headlines out there, there is one good thing that we can take away from this:

There is a HUGE opportunity for individuals who want to build their business without the hype and differentiate themselves from the rest of the market.

Building a business on the foundation of integrity can go a long way to establishing a successful career online.

Chris Rempel (a.k.a. "the lazy marketer") exemplifies that as well as a very rare few and each of us who is bothered by this rampant deception in marketing has a unique opportunity to capitalize on that by giving people what they really want. Genuine help and concern.

The only reason this may not sound so alluring as the "hype approach" is because you might actually "have to care about whether your customers are succeeding or not".

      Great post, thanks for sharing,

The reason people mention figures is that is what gets people to click on it. Most of these people aren't educated enough to try to parse what the ads say. I would say it's a failure on the part of the schools, but I also think that advertisers purposefully mislead which should probably be illegal (e.g. an ad for commodity trading saying "Make $12 million dollars... INSTANTLY!" when it turns out that Exxon made 12 million dollars net profit using a similar technique, after paying out several hundred million for hedging.)

I think people drop out of memberships after a few months due to the promises made that no one is realizing.
