One of the biggest problems newbies have is getting their feet off the ground and focusing their efforts on getting things done.

If you dig around the forum there are countless posts aimed at helping people on their internet marketing journey, many of these are excellent resources which if used correctly are excellent guides.

This post is not meant to be an exhaustive guide but it aims to get newbies onto a path in which they can begin to take action and build a business...without getting caught in all the overwhelming information that is out there.

If there is enough interest I will more than gladly make other posts aimed at supplementing this one....

Step #1

The very first step for any newbie should be taking a decision on what "Niche" to work on.

A "Niche" is a particular topic or area....

For example....

Golf is a niche...If you choose to go into this Niche you would be working on marketing to people interested in golf.

Weight Loss is a niche...If you choose to go into this Niche you would be working on marketing to people interested in weight loss.

Task #1

Write Down at least 3 Niches that YOU have some interest in.

(Note: Choosing a niche that you are passionate in makes it easier for you to work on)

Step #2

You should now have 3 "Niches" which you will use for this particular step....

The two "Niches" I used as an example earlier are extremely big and competitive niches....

In other words....They have lots of interest......but also lots of competition.

So our next step is to narrow down our niches into a smaller less competitive niche...

For example...

We could narrow our golf niche to.....Golf fitness... and then narrow it down even further to Golf Fitness For Men.

We could narrow down our weight loss niche to weight loss for mums and then narrow it down even further to weight loss for mums after pregnancy.

The idea is that we focus our efforts on a small area of a big niche....which means there is still a lot of interest......but less people to compete with.

Task #2

Take your three niches from task #1 and narrow them down at least twice as in the examples above.

Ready?....

Step #3

We now need to see if these niches are profitable niches...otherwise we could be wasting our time in focusing our efforts...

To do this we need to do the following:

We need to find out if there are people interested in our niche.
We need to find out if people are buying stuff in our niche.
We need to find out if people are making money in our niche.

1) Head to Amazon.com

We are looking for the Magazine section....if the Niche has a Magazine dedicated to it....there has to be an interest in the niche in which people are spending money on.

Example...Is there a Golf Magazine? Or a Weight loss related Magazine?

2) Head to Google Keyword Tool.

We are looking to see if there are people searching for our niche online.

Where it says "Word or Phrase" type in your main niche (i.e Golf) and your narrowed down versions (Golf Fitness & Golf fitness for men)

Where it says Advanced options and filters.....Make sure that this is set to the area you are targeting....I normally set mine to ALL COUNTRIES.

Click on Search....

What you are looking for is an indication that people are searching for your niche using the words that you entered in the box....or related words....

a good figure to aim for is that you have words that when added up total up to around 150,000

This would give you an indication that there are people searching for your niche online.

Make a list of the more popular phrases used.

3) Head back to Amazon.com

Do a search for your niche.....are products being sold in the niche?

4) Head over to Clickbank.com

Do a search for your niche.....are products being sold in the niche?

5) Head over to Google.com

Type in some phrases you found earlier using the Google Keyword Tool earlier on.

Can you see ads appearing on the left hand side or the top of the search results?

Task #3

Complete the above process and eliminate any niche that does not meet 4 our of the 5 steps above.

So there you have it.....a quick way of choosing a niche...

Hope this helps someone!

Regards

Chris

    Bravo Chris!

This is a very good, actionable plan that should help many newcomers to the industry get started in the right direction. Niche selection is always the first stumbling block that is encountered, and any type of solid advice on this subject will carry them far.

If newbies aren't expressing interest in you supplementing this information, then they don't appreciate the value of the information you have provided! I would definitely look forward to more information, whether to learn something new or just for review.

    Take care.

This is also good for the people who have lost track on what to blog about, in my opinion. There are some bloggers who decide to stop writing about anything because they lost the drive of writing about the stuff that they used to talk about. If they would see this, it would be a great time for them to plan things out perfectly so that the content creation goes on smoothly. Kudos, Chris, for cooking up some awesome tips!

Nice thread. I like the idea about checking magazines as a means of determining the market potential of a niche.

      Thanks Jon,

Magazines tend to be one of my first port of call when determining how popular a niche is.....

If there is a magazine then it means that people are advertising products which implies people are spending and obviously someone is profitting...

Seeing sponsored ads is a good thing....it means that people are spending money advertising in the niche which indicates that someone somewhere is profiting from it...

Good list to get started. So many times you see that people give you step 1 to 100, and then people just slowly go "oh my god, that is just too much"

So good on you for breaking down the first 1 /10th for people. Small bite sizes as I call it, and then more bite sizes. Remember getting to 100% of your tasks by doing 2% each day, only takes 50 days. Most people give up on about day 3 or so. Dont be one of them.

      Thanks!

I agree with you. Far too many people give so much information that it becomes overwhelming for most people to follow.

I wanted to give them something simple and actionable....

      Kind regards

      John,

Good Niches are out there....and there are plenty!

It's simply that you are eliminating these niches on the basis of competition in terms of SEO.....

      Don't!

There are plenty of ways in which we can get traffic to our sites.

    Hello,

Being a newbie myself..a lot of it makes sense. But the most of important thing is to test what works and what does not. We all run our businesses in a different way. There is a lot of information for newbies but it is always difficult to find out if it is up to date or not. And needless to say that there are a lot of people taking advantage of newbies.

    All the best,
    Nancy

I have to agree with you Nancy in that there are far too many people taking advantage of Newbies offering them fake promises and getting them to believe that this industry is actually easier than what it is.

All that push button software junk is causing more problems for newbies than they are solving.

With regards to the information being upto date....Its the way I still do my research and advise my students to...So i know it works

      Kind regards

I find that systems are at the heart of any business...

If you can systemise something...you have then simplified it.

This minimizes the chances of making mistakes and leaving out things...

          Thanks

I agree that the WF is a great place for starting marketers to learn this game. There are tons of free invaluable information, you just have to be willing to put in the time to go through it.

I agree that the niche is what matters, not the offer or the product. Markets (niches) last, offers don't. If you pick a niche first and really learn it exhaustively, you will be able to provide your customers with much better information and market to them in a much profitable manner.

Also, it's great to follow your passion when picking a niche. If you dive into a niche that is not of your interest, you will sooner or later realize it's not as enjoyable as if you had picked a niche you really are into.
