[Kindle] Help with book sales

Hi there.

I am new to kindle publishing and have a series online and a few other books. I have been giving my books promotions and they are going amazingly well. (1 book has 1600 give aways in 19 hours(Still going now)) But once the free promo has expired it seems to just stop. No sales, Nothing. Zip. Completly stops. Thats what happens to all my other books. The series of books is .99c each they are all linked together inside the book and had like 1 or 2 sales on 2-5 of the other books in the series.

So i don't know whats happening. Just to confirm and make sure everyone understands what is happening. I am not getting any sales other the free giveaways.

Let me know if you have any insight. Add me on skype if you dont want make it public i understand. (<<<<<-------Skype is in my profile)

Please just shed some light on this. Would help a great deal.

    Hi Cam,

This is strange what you are experiencing. I am getting the opposite effect. I got 44 sales in one book just in one week and made $150+ and then another book 22 sales and made $50+ just in that one week. Actually some other people had been asking me about this, so I am seriously thinking about making WSO on this while we can still fool around with the KDP select trick now.

Have you price tested the books at different levels? Sometimes 99 cents is the ideal price while other times it might be $2.99 or even more. In some cases, I have gotten more sales when I raised the price. The only way to know is to test it so I would do that if you have not done so already.

Have you received any feedback from the people who have read your book for free? In each book, I would have a link (make sure it's fully clickable) to a testimonial page where they can leave some feedback.

pianorosa: FYI, Jonny Andrews already did a WSO on this method. That doesn't mean yours wouldn't sell but maybe knowing it's already been done will save you some effort?

IMHO there is still an opportunity there.. Not everyone has the $50 (plus?) to spend on Jonny's WSO and/or any interest in watching more than a dozen videos.

Personally, I have been keeping one eye on the kindle WSO's, but am still holding off for exactly what I want - a thorough pdf, at a bargain price.

          Hey Guys,

Just a heads up to let you know that I found what I was looking for... First of all, for those who aren't aware, there are a couple of free Kindle pdf's available in the WarRoom. Also, Pianorosa has a WSO for (at the moment) just over 10 bucks, which looks great, although I haven't purchased it yet

I did purchase two others though - One was really disappointing, and the other was excellent. The disappointing one was from JVZoo for 5 bucks, has a great sales page, but is really light on content. If you know anything about Kindle at all, do not waste your money on it... There is no more information in it than what you would find on an average blog page, or from Amazon themselves.

The other was Kindle *************, for $7. I purchased through Tanner Larsson & Tim Castleman's sales page/link because of the bonuses they were offering. Rather than go into detail, here is the link to their list of bonuses: http://timandtanner.com/kindle (No affiliation whatsoever), and you can click through the headline under the video to see the sales page.

Supposedly, the deal is good until January 31st.

The bonus I was most excited about was the 'Microsoft Word & Open Office Kindle Publishing Guide + Pre Formatted Kindle Publishing Templates'. I have only seen Microsoft Word Kindle templates before, and (from memory) they were selling for something like $40. I use Open Office, and have downloaded the templates, which look really good.

          Hope this helps,

          Max.

PS - Mods, please let me know if link is not ok (?) and I will remove it!

PPS - I wrote the name of the product, but the '*********' appeared to replace it. There must be a good reason, but I have no idea what it is :p

            Hay Max -

I ordered the same product through Tanner Larsson & Tim Castleman's sales page. However, I have gotten ZERO response after multiple emails to them on how to download their bonus.

Did you get the bonus? Are these guys ligit or just scamming us?

              Hi Dr Gene,

They are definitely legit.. Don't know much about Tim, but Tanner at least has some quality products (and helpful emails).

Regarding the bonuses, it was a bit tricky because they didn't really make it widely known where to go - it is in the last couple of seconds of their video (I hate that! :p) Long story short - you need to go to their website and submit a ticket to support, with all the usual details... Transaction id/reciept number, etc.

I'm guessing the email address that you have is probably unmonitored

Let me know if you have any more problems with it.

I totally agree Paul on this. Before Kindle cracked down on certain Public Domain books, I had one that was outselling the free version, even though both were identical. For some reason, people perceive a cheaper book to be inferior to others or that something is wrong with it, even though it may actually be better.

Testing the price and getting some testimonials will definitely help your sales. If need be, on the last page, offer a "bonus" book to readers if they leave a review whilst the book is free (leave an email address they can contact you at and ask them to show proof). You can always remove the bonus once you have a few reviews.

Are you promoting your books? You can try doing that on You Tube and Social Media sites and forums related to your topic. Also you could join Forums about Kindle for more support and advice.

There was another WSO done by Amanda Craven about monetizing Kindle.

Yea i haven't got Jonnys WSO simply because i cant throw $50 at it.

Ok so an update i put the prices up of my books by 1-2 dollars each and they are taken off. Sold about 10 copy's of 1 book that has been a big hit in the last few days with free give aways so thats really good!!

As far as promoting them i have emailed a few people about the books and also have done free promotions but doing social media etc didnt think of that. Thank you peptone.

Thanks for all the advice I The warrior forum is the best for that!

If anyone wants to do a WSO in kindle i am interested in JV. Private message me if interested. Would love to take that on!!

Yes, that helps if your book has the QUALITY of a higher price. For the 2 books that are doing extremely well for me, one of them I priced at $7.77 and the other $3.57 (this is a shorter book).

I noticed you mentioned earlier that you priced your book at .99 and it didn't do well. Somehow the lower price books don't do too well after the promotion.

So for the lower prices, you can try something like this. Yesterday I just got my December Royalty. And I was surprise with some of the results. I had a book priced at $1.17 - this is back in December when the KDP select started. For that book in the month of December, I had 20 sales and with only 35% royalty it came to $7.79 for the month. But this same book had 24 people borrowing. And with the December fund, I got paid $40.75 just for that book alone. I did not do any promotion to that book at all but I made so much more with the 'borrowed' feature in the KDP select.

The KDP select program can really work well with promotions for some book and work against it for some books. This is the experimenting stage so go for what works and continue with that.

Ok then nice tip here. I have not had any of my books been borrowed yet. I have not really even thought about the borrowing side of things. My books are able to be borrowed but my stats dosen't say anyone that has borrowed it.

What subject of book do you think people borrow more of? First thing that poped into my mind is fiction books. What is your book that your are explaining above? Like what type of book. I will have to try get my books to be borrowed more i think. Might be the real way to go as well as sales.

Thanks for the help aye. My books are getting about 2-4 sales a day on the popular books. (I am targeting that type of book now as well)

Also another thought i have had, Dont know if anyone has tryed this but has anyone tryed to put a link at the end of the book to a landing page where they can sign up for updates regarding the subject of the book?? Like signing up for a email list??

          Let me know.

Hmmm..... I have quite a lot of "units borrowed" in December when the KDP program came on. They are all non-fiction books. I didn't do any promotion in the beginning because I wanted to see which way to go was better.

Anyways, I was pleasantly surprised when I saw people borrowing my books that I was only selling for $1.17. (I think people can only borrow a book a month, is that right?) If I were to use a 'borrow' feature, I would probably want to borrow a book that is worth over $9, wouldn't you? That was my thinking.

So I was totally shocked when I saw the result of December last week: I had 24 people borrowing this book resulting $40.75 payment.

So in first week of January, I gave this book a promotion. The result of this same book as of now is: 19 people bought and 9 people borrowed. So after the promotion, not so many people borrowed.

Another interesting thing: I have a similar book like this one here and in December, 14 got sold and 12 got borrowed. For Royalty, the 14 that got sold for $1.17, I received $5.74, whereas the 12 that got borrowed, I got $20.37. (Not as good as the first one.)

Then in early January, I put this one on a promotion. And so far i n January, the result of this book is better than the first one. 14 got sold and 19 got borrowed. So the promotion works better for this book. I don't understand why that is.

These 2 books are similar and are in a series. These books are not hot selling niche but people do buy (probably cuz it's only $1.17) and borrow them (which I don't understand why they borrow a $1.17 book). Maybe if someone knows why, that can give me some enlightenment.

For one of my niche, yes I put a link at the end for people to sign in. Actually the sign in page takes them to download videos because they are part of the content for the kindle book they bought, and you would think people who buy them would sign in to download those videos. I had 200+ people buying the book and only 3 people signed in. I don't understand why people don't sign in to get their videos as that is what they paid for. This is very strange to me. Maybe Kindle buyers do things differently from IM people.

In the beginning, I had no links at the end of my books because I didn't know if Amazon would allow this. Later I discovered that they allow you to put links. So what I do is that I have to monetize my books (not a set and forget system like many people say) by going back to re-upload the books and then put the links at the end. When you first upload, you don't have the links to your books yet but after you get accepted by Amazon, you can get your url link. So I now leave a link for people to go back to leave comments. And then I also say, if they had found the book helpful, they can view my other kindle books (so I put a list of links there). Once I added those links at the end, I seem to have more and more people borrowing my books.

In January, the borrow units just shot up so much. It's like a 'number' game to me now and it is very difficult for me to keep track. Like I have 47, 30, 26, 25, 22, 19, 16, 13, etc.

I am thinking of buying the Kindling Membership that people are talking about in the Warrior forum. This one is $37 and seems reasonable and this guy is offering life time membership I think. Maybe if they have a group membership in there, they might discuss these things more closely which I think is a great idea because we can learn from one another's experiences. I want to get the other one that someone mentioned here about Jonny's but $50 is a lot to pay for one time fee. Also Jay just put out a very reasonable WSO on Kindle this week but I think you need to be in the States to get the full benefit. I bought his kindle thing last year and that's how I got started but kindle has changed in the last few months.

Rosa, thank you so much for your last few posts!! I am not yet publishing but got ideas about how things really are, just by reading your questions and successes, and other comments in this thread.

I think the general public does not like to give their email partly to prevent email overload, but actually more because of security concerns. Like I used to want to be unknown and 'guarded' my email url like a bank account number. If they could have gotten to see a video (or a free download) maybe it has to be pre-sold to have them excited enough to overcome their other concerns?

I am going to buy Kindling now, my concern is not the price (yes I wish it was $10 cheaper, but really what is $10 or $30 when I hope to make thousands!). My problem is if there is too much to read or watch, as I am still working a dayjob. But since I have a lot to learn then I can not mind reading a lot, and I need details and examples! Yet I also need time to do it all too.

Months ago I had though of a product idea, but I figured it would mostly be videos. I don't know if videos are part of the KDP market place? So I either make that clickbank as I planned, and/or I make a print version to also sell for the Kindle?

                Hi Larry,

I have not had the time to buy the Kindling WSO yet. Hopefully the price will stay at $37 for a while but it sounds like a good one with membership. Is there a forum for people to discuss and ask questions.

About the videos with kindle, I put out piano courses that really need to put in videos for people to learn. So in the beginning, I only put out 'theory' material. They don't do very well. So now I am trying out videos - but there is no way to put videos into the kindle book, so I put in a link there for people who have bought the course to sign in to get the videos. The downside of this is that if people get them free, they can all sign in to get the videos free. Also it takes a long time to do videos and I am not willing to charge more than $9.99 for the kindle book (because I want the 70% royalty). So, by the time I only get 70% of $9.99 plus another 30% tax withholding, I end up with only $3 which is not really worth it. I sell them at $30 in my own website. Anyways, I am playing around with this to see what good outcome can come out of this. Worse come to worse, I just take them off the kindle shelf but I am testing this out now.

              A few ideas/suggestions:

              1. There's no accounting for human behavior - As a psychologist, I've been studying these curious creatures for almost 45 years. The one thing I can tell you is that there is no single reason for the behavior of any individual. And when you combine the responses of multiple people, there are numerous factors (both obvious and hidden) involved in predicting/explaining their behavior. So, rather than looking for a "reason" why some people would barrow a $1.17 book rather than buy the same book, it would be better to ask if there is any way this information could be used in your marketing efforts.

              2. Once again, go with the data. 3 people responding out of a group of 200 is probably statistically significant - which means you can reliably draw inferences from the data. One thing that occurs to me is that you probably need an intermediate step - "signing in" may be too big a leap without having developed enough trust in what you have to offer. Perhaps some sort of freebie with high-perceived value related to your piano niche. The advantage of this is that you could then upsell your piano videos as a back end to your book (at a price lowere than you offer on your website, of course).

              3. The problem here is that you don't have enough data to draw any reasonable conclusions. I see this same mistake being made by many people on the WF - as well as most other marketing forums - people drawing mistaken conclusions based on insufficient data. Just because "barrow" beats "buy" a few times does not mean that more people will barrow the book than will buy the book. If this were to happen say 40 or 50 times, or the numbers were radically different, than that might have some predictive value.

One of the rules in direct marketing is to test various items against a "control" (which is the best result obtained to date). And if the new item exceeds the control, then that becomes the new control. Most marketers will simply take the new highest number and use it as the new control without ever questioning if the difference is significant or not. A lot of time and money has been wasted by this mistake. You don't need to be a statistician to learn how to use a simple t-test. If even that is too overwhelming, I'm sure you could outsource it fiverr.

              Hope this helps.

    Really enjoying this post!

I just published my first kindle book this morning. Haven't even had time today to start getting the word out, promotions, nothing, but looking forward to publishing my next 30 or so books this month (my goal).

I'm starting an informal, free, mastermind group in the mastermind groups room. It'll be run through Google+, or maybe we can find a common Twitter hashtag to use, but if you're interested send me a PM.

One thing you might try, Cam, is getting a few back links to your kindle sales page. If you notice in the search engines, not many of Amazon pages have any back links. That could mean a higher position for your kindle book.

When I had Amazon sites, I used to get as much traffic to my Amazon affiliate pages as I could and this worked very well for me. I 'm switching gears now to writing kindle books and this is what I'm going to do. Just throwing out an idea.

Try getting other marketers in your niche to promote the book (or blog owners that review books). Give the people with the top sales a prize.

Are you going after a particular search phrase? Do your books show on Amazons page 1 of results for a popular search term?
