I have an offline Plastering and Property maintenance business. Nothing too serious just a business that goes towards paying the mortgage every month. I am just about to build a website and wanted to know a little about keywords and PR1 PR2 PR3 and the correct was to try and get things done right. The site will be done through a UK2 site builder.

I am thinking with the new Plastering site I am about to build I will have a facebook page, I am not sure I am clutching at straws and perhaps do one of these article submissions to raise the profile of the businessand services I am offering.

I have another site which is nothing to do with the above business which I am trying to get rated up the page rankings and is starting to cost me some serious money on Adsense. I am a novice in this area but not green so don't want to be buying package after package as it doesn't make me any money I just want it listed higher. That site is a more specialist site. I am not sure if you can put the site address on here so people could give me some pointers but the market it is in is pretty big.

Any help on these issues would be greatly received.

I understand if members on the forum don't like the way this is being asked but I will be completely honest and say if there was some sort of logical order to do things and it was written somewhere then I would do it. For me I just hop from post to post and try and gather info as I go.

If I see anything I know about I write and help.

Many Thanks

J4y

OK, that helps a little. I have Microsoft Expression and I comfortable using it. I use it in a split format so I can see what is happening in the code. The only thing is I could probably do with someone establishing it for me and then I just host it and do changes as I go. As long as the correct structure is in place I guess I am heading in the right direction.

On the Tittle, Meta descriptions and Meta tags. Are these what people are refering to as keywords? Or should keywords be in the the core content of the site?

      Cheers

In reverse order. I think you mean Adwords not Adsense. If you are paying money for an Adwords campaign - stop. It's a good way of losing a lot of money very quickly unless you know what you are doing.

I'm guessing that the first site is for your "real" business. It's aim would be to get you real, local customers. Stop worrying about PR and start asking yourself how your customers will want to find you and where your customers will find you online.

A Facebook page is a good start, as I'm guessing your FB followers will be people you know or friends of friends. A good way to get local business.

Think about the keywords people will use to find you. "plaster in mytown", for example. Do the Google search and see what comes top of the results. If it's a listing site that you can advertise on, then consider doing it - at least until your own site is higher in the rankings.

Get yourself on Google Places (Google maps), using the keywords you want people to find you for.

For your own site, I know nothing about the online site builders. Will you have your own domain name? If so, make sure you use your keywords in the content - but sparingly. Think of your customers. When they come to your site they want to know who you are, what you do, when you work, how they contact you, what your work is like, how much experience you have. They DON'T want a home page that is keyword stuffed and full of articles on plastering. (If you must do that, bury it on a blog page somewhere)

Customers shop with their eyes. Add loads of photos of your work.

Rosetrees and Eric , thanks for the replies. Yeah I meant adwords. The adwords I think should go on hold as I am getting some major results but no conversions. I only need a couple of sales for me to cover the costs. It isn't for the Plastering business though. It is more a European search advertising a ski apartment. Massively competitive market. I think I will stop this though as if it doesn't return a conversion soon then the season will be over and I think the money will be wasted. I am not sure if the Adwords starts me creaping up the search engines organically.

I agree with the plastering site. I need to get on Google places in that respect and have a presence there. The reasons for Plaster Coventry doesn't come up is cause people search for a plasterer rather than the product. I think!!!!! I think I need to get my head around sorting out the site in Wordpress now I know it is ok with SEO. I also need to have a look into latent semantic indexing. I am sure ther eis something on you tube.

Many thanks for the responses. I have some direction now.

  • Doing a quick search with the Adwords Keyword tool shows no results for "plaster Coventry." You need to find keywords that are being searched before choosing what keywords to optimize your pages for. Then, those keywords and the related keywords (look up latent semantic indexing) should be used in your page, in your title, in your meta description, and in your meta keywords.

I have no idea what UK2 site builder is, but there's no reason to not be using Wordpress for your website. The SEO powers are well beyond what can be done with other platforms.

I agree with rosetrees completely about Google Places. Every physical business should have a Google Places page. It's so easy to claim, and in fairly non-competitive markets you're basically given a front page listing.
