Selling Erotica on Kindle: A Case Study

Hi everyone,

There has been a bit of buzz around here about selling erotica on Kindle and it has certainly perked my ears up. As someone who has a sex related book up on Amazon already, I thought this might be a perfect new little passive income stream for me.

Yesterday I decided that I would jump in with both feet and let you guys know what I'm doing step by step. You can all watch me either fly or fail publicly. Fun for everyone!

Here's a list of what I did yesterday to prepare:

1. Researched Kindleboards.com. There are several threads there talking about selling erotica that discuss pricing, book length, etc. Reading those threads was incredibly helpful.

2. Decided on an angle. Since I am from the deep South, I thought it would be fun to write a series of "southern" themed stories to sell in a collection. I'm thinking 3 stories per book. The first one will be titled: Southern Erotica: Volume One.

3. Decided on my pen name. Most erotica writers use a pen name and I need one, too. I wanted something campy and fun that still evoked a little bit of the swamp land. I decided on "Violet Moon". Fun, huh?

4. Picked up two Kindle books. This is the first cost that I incurred for this project and it was under $5. The first one was "Make Bucks Writing and ePublishing Erotica (eBook Publishing) [Kindle Edition]" and the second one was "Be A Sex-Writing Strumpet [Kindle Edition]". I read the first book last night and also got through the first chapter of the second one.

When I really want to do something I tend to hit the ground running. Tomorrow I'll update again and let you guys know what I have accomplished today. This thread will be a good way to keep me moving forward with this project and you guys can follow along in the process and find out if it actually works. (To make money, that is ) I also plan on posting more detailed updates on my blog here.

If you are already publishing erotica on Kindle and are not shy about it, I'd love to hear from you. Feel free to jump on in!
