Hi folks

I've seen a number of posts here lately by people that seemed to be completely overwhelmed and confused by internet marketing.
They are either looking for a magic bullet, or are completely lost and have no idea where to begin.

So today I wanted to break internet marketing down into what I feel are the nuts and bolts of this game.
I like to call it 'Internet Marketing's Biggest Secret', but the truth is that if you think about this so called 'secret', I'm pretty sure you already knew it.

So here we go.....

For me, internet marketing comes down to two big factors.
"Traffic and Conversions".

That's it. That is all you have to worry about when it comes to internet marketing.
It doesn't matter whether you are doing Clickbank marketing, Amazon marketing, CPA offers, your own products etc., all you need to do is drive the right traffic to it, and then convert that traffic.

So how can you use this information?
Well it's easy. Remember the only things you have to worry about are "Traffic and Conversions".
So ask yourself two questions.

1) How am I driving traffic to my offer?

2) How am I converting this traffic?


Traffic - When it comes to driving traffic, you want that traffic to be as targeted as possible!
Why? Because if you offer people something they actually want, they will be far more likely to buy it.
I'm in the SEO game so I drive all my traffic through organic Google searches. I rank my sites in Google for keywords that people actually use when they are looking to buy something. If you have money to spare, then use PPC advertising to drive highly targeted traffic to your site. This will get you much faster results. If you don't have too much money to burn, then go the SEO route. It works well.

Conversions - Show people the benefit of what you are promoting. At the end of the day, all people want is something that will benefit them. If your traffic is highly targeted like I suggested in step 1, then you won't have to do much to convert them. They will already be looking for what you are offering them. Simply remind them why they are looking for this offer by telling them how they will benefit from owning it.

It sounds way too simple, but believe me when I tell you, this is all you need to know when it comes to internet marketing.
"Traffic and Conversions".

Too many people throw up a website and then wonder why they haven't made any sales a week later. They then think that internet marketing doesn't work, or that it's a scam.
The truth is that either they didn't get enough or any traffic, or they got the wrong kind of traffic and couldn't convert it.

Next time you are overwhelmed by internet marketing, and are thinking about quitting, just say the words "Traffic and Conversions", and focus on that.
You will be amazed at the results you get if you focus your attention on that.

    Hey nice post. May I add that as well as the core needs for success are traffic and conversions learning new skills are also significant features too.

    I'm not suggesting becoming a jack of all trades. However, to stand a chance in this business I believe you need to take time out and learn new skills. For example learning how to use FTP, the dynamics of images, HTML editor, etc.

      Yes absolutely correct! It all comes down to how targeted your traffic is. If you can nail this then the conversions tend to take care of themselves.

      I often see people complaining about not making sales, or having a high bounce rate, but 99% of the time it comes down to poor traffic.

      At the end of the day, if you send 1000 people who are looking for a dog training book to your site which promotes a dog training book.....you're bound to make a few sales!

    This is no secret, but there is so much boiled into generating traffic and efficiently converting said traffic. Getting profitable converting traffic requires no how, money, and/or lots of time. I find that most people can identify goals (economic traffic, conversions, and profitable EPC) more easily than the how to achieve the goals in IM. Setting the goal of getting traffic that converts is much easier than figuring out how to do it. I think most newbies understand the goal they are aiming for, but don't know how to get there (e.g., SEO plan) or where to start (e.g., good keyword research).

    That's a good break down.

    In my circles, the words used are "advertising" and "message", but the meaning is almost the same.

    I thought traffic was something to be avoided. It makes you late to work.

    Seriously, I did think that traffic only applied to brick and mortar stores. It is odd to hear that term applied to online stores.

    Master those two things and you can create a business in no time. In fact, you don't even have to master it ... just do it okay and it can achieve results. Frankly I'm decent at traffic and okay at conversions and earn a living online.

    My traffic success is a result of prolific writing and some keyword research. That's about it, and it works.

      Agreed, I also think conversion is definitely the harder part. So this is where the quality of traffic comes into play for me. If you are getting highly targeted traffic you will find that the conversions will usually take care of themselves.

      If people are actively looking for what you are offering them, and actually want to buy it before they even arrive at your site, they will be in the 'buying' mindset. As long as you have a half decent site offering them what they are looking for, you will be sure to make sales.

      It all starts with quality traffic.

    Traffic and conversions. I agree. And conversions relate directly to content and copywriting. I think traffic is the more important of the two. And as a writer it sorta troubles me to have to admit that. You can occasionally get conversions even with crappy copy. But you can't get squat even with the best copy and no traffic. Go figure, huh?

    It is easy to say get targeted traffic and completely another thing to do it. This is the start of the process every IM'ere goes through to succeed. It is not traffic and conversion that they need, but enough experiments to know what works.

      You're absolutely right. If it was easy to do it, then everyone would be making a full-time living online.

      It is just a starting point, but a very very good starting point which can help people keep focused on the big goal. If you're scratching not making much online, but spending 10 hours a day in front of your pc, it can be depressing and easy to get into the overwhelmed and give-up mindset.

      My advice is just to remember the points in the original post and use that as your solid base.
