So much for Big G's "Do No Evil"! The big G-Kenya ripoff

This is the second sign I have seen recently that Big G's philosophy of "Don't be evil" may be eroding throughout their organization. The other one has been their recent trend of hiding data from site owners (specifically some of the traffic origins in G analytics).

Here's a situation where they outright lied to small business owners about a partnership with a Kenya local business directory called Mocality

The Google-Kenya ripoff - Boing Boing

Wow, it surprises me less and less to read stuff like that about Google. They seem to be becoming a company with bad business practices more and more with time. Like the article says, you'd think this is a exceptional incident, performed by one employee... Unbelievable...

It will be interesting to read Google's final analysis on this problem.

Just reading the various sites what comes to mind for me is the possibility that for some branches of google, employees may be on quotas or, more likely, may be paid on a productivity basis for attracting new accounts.

Of course, that doesn't happen if management is paying attention - sounds like that branch of google was endorsing the behavior with or without the blessing of top levels of the company. Interesting story.

Unfortunately, unethical and outrightly fraudulent activities are becoming business as usual in the US. Politicians rely on corporate money for their own job campaigns (and wallet lining) and aren't real motivated to make them act according to law. With all of the financial entities that caused the crash walking free - and even getting MORE bailout funds of the people to keep them going, there aren't many companies who fear any real repercussions from these types of activities other than having to knock it off when the public gets wind of them and starts to object.
