How much traffic is enough?

Hi all,

I have read the forum on and off for a while, but I just joined yesterday because this seems to be the place to get answers. I have bought different programs and tinkered with IM for a few years, but never made any serious money and have never made a profitable ROI. Now, I know some of this is because of lack of patience and /or lack of effort on my part, but I am looking to give it a serious go now. Long intro I know, sorry, but I've seen others accused of posting a question just to get the backlink and I wanted to assure you all that I am not in that category.

My Question:

I know the basic idea for a blog that makes affiliate sales is that you must have good SEO, copy, converting product, and traffic. My question is how much traffic is the goal? If you aren't making any sales what amount of traffic per day eliminates that as the potential cause?

The % are going to vary in each market niche. But a good rule of thumb is around 2-5%.

I have ones that convert much higher and I have ones that are lower. A big part is getting targeted traffic. Not all traffic is created equal.

I hope that this gives you an idea.

I think you need a few thousand visitors to really know what is converting well and what isn't. If you get ten visitors and no one converts, you really can't throw away what you at doing and the work you have put in and say what you did doesn't work or doesn't convert. You need to get a few hundred to a thousand to really know what is working.

Start with trying a number you are comfortable with.

Personally, I will start by targetting 100 uniques, then moving to 500 unique, and 1000 unique per day.

At all times, makes sure you track the number of sales that comes in, and the conversion rate.

On another note, my best idea to date to increase conversion is to usually center the blog around one affiliate or personal product of mine, rather than bunch of products from numerous people. This gives me a better focus on how to write and present the content of the blog (to end with the sale of the particular product) and allows me to control the overall quality of the message, content and traffic that comes in to the blog.

    Hope this helps :-)

You can never have enough traffic

You just want to make sure its TARGETED traffic - as others have said already.

This just means that your visitors are already interested in whatever you are promoting, before they ever land on your page.

For example, you wouldn't want to send someone who's interested in Farmville a link for a new toaster. Or would you...? LOL

Thanks everybody. From what I am seeing here my main problem right now is not enough targeted traffic. I probably need to work on my SEO and backlinking more than anything to get to that 1,000 or more unique visitor point. Again, thanks for all the great information and I will give some "thanks" as soon as I figure out how that works.

Doesnt matter if you get 1 hit a day, or 100000000000000 hits a day. It has to be targeted.

Lets say you get 1000 hits a day untargeted.

Or lets say you 100 hits a day super targeted...

    Which would you want?

Most people are going to say "Comon, I would have 1000 hits a day for SURE!"

BUZZZZZ eerrrrrttt! Wrong! I would rather have 100 hits a day super targeted. WHY? because even though it does not sound very impressive, you are more likely to get sales from the 100 people hitting your site already half interested.

Infact it does not take a genius to get these 100 people from lookers into buyers.

With the 1000 people, you may get a sale or even 2 here and there. But really, you will not see many results.

Verdict : it is targeted traffic taht you want. Not just any old traffic hitting your site. The more targeted the better. There are lots of strategies in the WF to help you with that. Just use the search button. Treasure trove of info there.

Well I make a full time income with 4 to 5 visitors a day. Its all "order" traffic though which makes a big difference. I only need a trickle of traffic.

I'm not familiar with "order" traffic. Would you mind explaining? I know of different ways to buy traffic, but I thought they were for the most part useless untargeted traffic.

I think by "order" traffic, he means "buyer" traffic. Meaning that people who are coming to his site are finding him through buying keywords, so when they get there, they are ready to buy whatever it is that he is selling or promoting as an affiliate marketer.

Lest say you are promoting car insurance and each sales gives you $30 commission. You only need a few visitors a day to make enough money to call it making a living.

          That's absolutely right, "buyer" traffic.

I regularly have $100-$400 days with just 3 or 4 visitors a day, 5 at the very most. I never think in terms of "traffic", I think in terms of ranking for keywords that bring in visitors with credit card in hand, and since they're ready to buy I only need a very small number each day to make good money.

If you got a zillion visitors a day totally un targeted then you would be lucky to make a sale!

100 targeted visitors a month is worth more than a zillion untargeted

This is a great question. Although it's SO subjective, some common experiences would be awesome.

So, let's say that we're talking about a niche site, done on a blog. Keywords were selected with a KW tool (whatever tool), and the site has the basics of SEO - title, meta descriptions, h1, body copy and ALT text have relevant KW's in them on each page.

      I'm not talking averages - that's a HUGE qualifier. I'm talking "typical."

What do you all think the typical amount of traffic would be to make $1000/month?

      200 uniques per day?
      500 uniques per day?
      1000?

It's interesting. In another thread (now I forget which one) someone wrote that they had 11,000 uniques per month. That's only 367 visitors per day average.

Many of the replies were of the "you should do great with that amount of traffic" variety.

So.... clearly there are some basic assumptions about how much traffic is needed, assuming the traffic has an "average" amount of targeting.

My idea is that somewhere in the 500-1000 visitors per day range will yield from maybe $300 to $1500/month. This would be from adsense, affiliate links, building the list and selling to it, etc.

So - given the "typical" scenario I laid out, what do you think is enough traffic?

No traffic is too much traffic when its generating you money, if you are getting a lot of natural traffic and no income, consider changing design, promotions or products

If you are buying or getting loads on un-targeted traffic then you are pretty much wasting your time and need to consider changing strategies in order to make serious money on the long term

    Best of luck

If you already have the site up or a pre-marketing page, try sending some targeted paid traffic there to gauge the market reaction to your page.

It might cost a few hundred dollars, but it will give you a great idea as to whether you're heading down the right path.

Legends in direct mail say that you need at least 1000 names for a good test. So in the internet marketing world, if you're selling anything under $50... a good test of about 300 targeted hits would be sufficient enough to let you know if a niche is responsive or not.

If you can't make any sales then you have to forget all traffic you currently have because they are not your market.
You need to have keywords research and use keywords to target your market niche.
You need to have traffic that bring you low bounce rate, lot of page views, high conversion rate. No matter you have 1k or 10 k traffic it still profitable as long as your traffic is which you would like to target.

    "How much traffic is enough?"

I have one client who gets around 150,000 visits per month - and makes sales of around $1000 per month...

Another client of mine has between 500 and 1000 visits per months - and makes sales of around $10,000 per month.

    True story

Depending on the niche, the product you're selling, the profit margin on it, etc - one client can earn you more than 100. Makes sense, right?

Also, depending on HOW WELL YOUR SITE CONVERTS - everything changes.

If I had a choice of BRILLIANTLY CONVERTING page with 100 people per month versus a CRAP PAGE with 100,000 people per month, I would go for the first.

So the problem is not so much "how much traffic" you need to make money (although you COULD simply say something like "I will convert 1% of ANY traffic I get, so the more traffic, the merrier"), but it's a question of the VALUE and EXPERIENCE your site gives the visitor - and then, how that experience translates into CONVERSIONS, i.e. decisions to take action, be it joining your list or even just buying straight from the page.

If you couple your on-page sales with list-building (always a pretty good idea, but if taken to an extreme it will NOT earn you as much as many people say - a list needs to be maintaned TACTFULLY and TASTEFULLY), then you will be able to convert the same person potentially many times.

One of my sites has a tiny membership (under 500) where EACH member buys something regularly - because it's good stuff. And I don't even have to push. They come to the site regularly and just pick stuff they like.

So, as always in life - it's not about QUANTITY - but rather QUALITY.

    Hope this helps paul

Traffic needed depends really much what is your market niche. If it seems that you don´t have enough sales, why don´t you just publish blogs with different niches? If you want to make some serious money, just remember to keep going 100% with your sites/blogs. Money from affiliate programs is never easy money. You can get better results by targeting right customers/visitors.

It depends on how much you want to make online.

If you want to make 100 a day, you need a certain amount of traffic.

If you want to make 1000 a day you gunna need more.

I think alot of people have answered this questions suffice, but without lots of traffic you aint gunna make a pretty penny.

yeah i wanna second everyone who spoke about getting TARGETED traffic. It's kinda like this...

If you had a hotdog stand, where would you put it? I would try to find a group of STARVING people. Because I know if they are hungry, i will sell more hotdogs.

So if you can drive people to your site that are actually LOOKING to solve a need and are starving for your solution, then you will convert a ton.

If not, you're just wasting your time and effort pretty much.
