If you want to sell me something, sending me to a video that is over 16 minutes long is absolutely pointless. (I have the attention span of a gnat)...

Give me something I can read as well or instead of and you just might get a sale from me, or if that's beyond the realms of possibility, why not break your vid down into smaller itty bite sized pieces

My gosh, I so totally agree. Perhaps I'm just a relic from the olden times, but give me a pdf that I can quickly read so I do not have to spend however long learning the benefits/materials/etc.....

It works *far* better for me.

Wish it did for me customers too.....

LOL! Ya know Kim...I don't think I have EVER watched a sales video in its entirety.

    I am more of a reader...much more.

I say, at least put a transcript beneath it.

Every time I have ever "attempted" to watch a sales video, my internal BS meter immediately "pegged out" and I clicked the back button just before the needle broke.

The worst ones are the videos where there is no time bar at the bottom, so you have no idea if it will last another 2 minutes, or 2 hours. Makes me go for the red X too.

      Yup

This one actually said at the top how long the vid was so I clicked the back button straight away, shame cos it looked as though it may be an interesting product.

It's a system that obviously works for these marketers, however I can't help wondering how many (like me) they are missing out on

      Second that.

It's one thing to watch a sales video and another to not have the time ticker. Not knowing how long before it ends is a turn off. I will never do a video sales pitch without at least a timer on it. I think not having it there is like forcing the potential customer to watch the video and sacrifice their time to do so.

Something else to consider is not everyone will be viewing at home.

Many are probably at work, which is another reason you should always offer different formats.

So... you're saying my hidden timeline, no X to close, 34 minute long video repeating myself till exhaustion doesn't work? Noooesss!!!!!

Anyway, remember we're marketers... but comon people don't react this way And they probably love the long videos and the absence of PDF's (that's so 80's). lol

Kim, we've known each other a long time and you know I love you, but this is
      what it comes down to.

      1. Hopefully (and this is not a given) the person who created the video is either
split testing against a non video or shorter video version to see what converts
      the best for HIS market.

      2. Is ultimately USING what works best for him or her.

You don't like long videos. That's great. A lot of people, I am sure, don't as well.

I love a long video IF it's interesting.

So...I'll give it a chance. However, if it doesn't really catch my interest right
away, I will turn it off. It's that simple.

Ultimately, the marketer has to feel out his target market to see what works
best. If the long video proves to be the best converter, he'd be foolish to use
      anything else.

That just isn't good business sense.

My 2 cents on the subject for whatever they're worth.

PS - I still love ya.

I run a web video service and we say to our clients that their video should NEVER go over 2 minutes. Optimal time is a minute or 30 seconds to explain how something works!

As for a 16 minute video? No thanks, I'd rather watch Entourage.

I totally agree. When I was in TV news, we covered the lead story in 2 minutes or less (and that included anchor intros and live shots). If I can sum up the crime and corruption at city hall (and what it means for your property taxes) in 2 minutes, you can certainly tell me everything I need to know about your product in 2 minutes.

If you're going to have me sit through a 16 minute video, it better be darn good. One person who fits into this is Andy Jenkins (the "Video Boss"). I've sat and watched 20 minute videos of his that kept me interested the entire time. Just bear in mind that most of that time was spent providing legitimate facts and information - not just him trying to sell his products.

And, ditto on the folks who want to know how long the video is before they watch it. After all, time is money!

I, too, hate landing on a video sales page, not knowing how long I'm going to be delayed. I usually just leave right away.

    It would be helpful:

    a. To be given the amount of time required to watch...because if it's only a minute or two, I would probably take the time.

    b. A link to a salespage at the bottom so that I can quickly read details to see if I'm interested in the product even though I don't watch to watch a video.

    c. For long videos, you probably won't want to state the length of time to discourage visitors....BUT, you'll need to presell me in advance before sending me to the salespage with the video. I need a good reason why I should spend me time watching it.

Steven, you're right. A good marketer is going to test and see what work best. The fact is, you can't please everyone all the time...so it's good to go with the best converting salespages.

Yep long videos don't work. Neither do long sales pages. Just tell people the features and the price and they will buy. There is no reason to ever hire a copywriter.

You know what else is annoying and doesn't work:

    - Upsells
    - Downsells
    - Exit popups
    - Webinars
    - Recorded webinars
    - Autoplay videos
    - Squeeze pages
    - Recurring billing
    - Sending emails just to promote stuff
    - Product launches
    - Banner ads
    - Facebook pages that require you to Like them before seeing the content
    - Making decisions based on testing instead of what you think will annoy people the least

Listen to what people say on this forum and just stop doing all these annoying things and you'll surely make more money.

One interesting approach I've seen is when clicking away from a sales video, a pop-up appears asking to stay on the page. And then the text of the video is given.

I think Porter Stansberrry did this with his End of America video for his newsletter.

About the only time I want to watch a long sales video is when I'm doing something else and can ignore most of it .

It is funny because when I first saw these long videos I wondered why a marketer would ever do that, who would sit through it?! Then I heard that long sales videos/pages are required or convert better if the product is expensive. But my personal opinion has always been that I hate them....there are videos that are 30 min and longer. I always wondered who all these people were who sat through a 30 minute sales video and then bought the product...

It's obviously not any of us in this thread...

I don't mind videos per se, but marketers, please leave the controls there so we can rewind, fast-forward, etc. at our leisure.

Taking the controls off the video is, in my humble opinion, like being a marketing bully. When you try to force people to do stuff, you are likely going to meet with resistance with certain types of people.

Like Kim, I too prefer a PDF, for the simple reason that I'm a speed reader and can absorb a lot of information quickly.

I agree 100%. Usually if I can't pause, skip forward, etc. I just close out the video.

If there is a video - I much prefer it to be the style that allows me to skip forward or back - and lets me know the times (You Tube style).

If I have no idea on time, I generally do not watch it.

My connection is royally bad. It takes forever for a video to play and then it's all cut up when it stops and winds some more. There's not a product on earth that I'm going through that for. I sometimes don't bother with things that I actually search for and want to watch when the connection is acting up. There is another person in my home, too, so the volume is turned off at night. If you want me to stick around, you will give me some text to read instead of relying on a video.

Funny how things happen I have gone to a site with just one of these annoying long videos with no controls and started playing it, turned the sound down and hopped onto the forum here and came across this thread, just flicking back and forth and still not got to the actual product still telling his life story of how he was on the street, no money, no prospects and started a business from the Library in between meals at the soup kitchen. went form rags to riches narrowly avoiding the clutches of a prison cell whilst his mother was working 6 jobs to feed the rest of the family. Now hes making a Million dollars a second on auto pilot, living in a mansion with 23 sports cars on the drive - hang on just checked back- just showing off his new yacht with 43 pole dancers at his beck and call.
O hang on hes now slamming the "Gurus" who've been lying to me all the time - I will never make any money - Im just a sucker!
Ah now - he has the answer for me.
Hes going to show me step by step how to do it and better still he met a world class programmer who used to work for NASA when he was working out of the Library he partnered with him to produce an "ATM machine" and I cant believe I can have it too for -No not $50,000, No Not $9,999 No Not even $5,000 even though at that price it would be a steal No I can have it for - wait for it - £97 and he will even through in some juicy bonuses that are worth over $9,000

Just flicked back and hes still ranting on thats 23 minutes and not an order button in site yet - whats he waiting for I ve got my credit card out ready and waiting (NOT)
But wait breaking news spots are limited it may be gone before I get to the check out!! And this page will be gone by tomorrow

Ah Well missed out again what a shame, but wait I try to leave the page and what, I can get a discount - no gone off the idea, try to leave the page again, what another discount down to $77 now. Try to leave the page again what I can get his secret code for making money for free - just give my e mail address and my Name

Just flicked back and the bloody thing is still going. Dont these people that think that we have better things to do with our time?
I am now being bloody minded and want to see what the actual length of this behemoth is - fair play to him must have taken a week just to write the bloody script.

Rant over but I think you know what my view is

I usually can't take more than 2 minutes of that video IM *BS*. Although sixpackshortcutscom is the only recent long sales video that I have watched till the end.
They managed to make it somehow really appealing visually, so I didn't really listen to the video but was glued to those drawings.
I think they really nailed it with that and I know the program is really successful now.

Or, you decided to buy but the video drones on and on while all you want is the Buy Button to appear, drives me crazy!

Worse though, I find a great product to promote but the only option is your affiliate link goes to that one, long winded sales video - this is the frustrating example, at least for me, because I know from my experience I can sell the product otherwise.

A recommendation to those product developers out there... make a video version sure, but provide a regular sales page too - I'm one affiliate who will send to the sales page entirely. Yes this might throw off your testing but...you could make it work for you too.

    Any way, my thoughts provided.

I honestly think it depends on your market. And it depends on what type of marketer you are honestly. If you do your testing, longer videos tend to convert better than shorter videos in my experience. And it also depends on the price of the product.

It's impossible to give enough content to get someone to buy a $97 in a 5 minute video. It just doesn't happen. It also depends if you're experienced or not. If you're brand new, I think long videos work better because it's still new to you. But if you've been doing this for a while, then obviosuly u want them to cut to the chase.
