i currently have 8 sites hosted on a single hostgator baby plan... (1 site, 7 addon domains), works fine

inside the you can find the nameservers on the bottom left.

i can't comment on the SEO effect because my sites aren't interrelated at all. but they will have the same shared IP address...

Get a hostgator reseller account. You'll have a WHM panel where you can view all of your sites and stats in one place and a separate cpanel for each site.

You don't need to move a domain - keep it where you register it and just repoint the DNS to your hosting server.

With 12 sites, a reseller account would be costing you about $2 a month in hosting for each site. Pretty cheap!

Or you *could* give a fellow Warrior your business. I personally prefer a hosting reseller account so each account has its own Cpanel, plus with a reseller account you can even sell hosting to others.

I offer true hosting reseller accounts for $10 less per month than HostGator. With 12 sites, one of my reseller accounts would be costing you about $1.25 a month for each site. Pretty cheap! PM me if I can help.

If you plan on holding on to the sites and not selling them then just use the Baby plan with add on domains.

That would the best for cost.

SEO wise I have not had a problem with add on domains.

i have hostnine reseller with 10 multiple IPs, as well as other hosting.

I dont really understand the question since (on the separate accounts with the reseller acc.) it is the same thing as on my other hosting. They all go to a CPanel at the end, and each acc allows addon domains or subdomains.

I NEVER mess with any DNS settings in Cpanel, all i do is set my nameservers on my DOMAIN NAME provider...and then in CPanel i create addon domains/subdomains and 30mins later i can access the domain/addon-domain.

The advantage of the reseller account for me is the different IPs and the fact that i can have more accounts/hostings without the limitation which ONE account usually has, eg. quotas and number of SQl databases etc.

I have some "normal" accounts where i do literally have 40+ addon domains AND whatever number of subdomains and it gets kind of messy.

I think H9 reseller "main" interface is about the same as WHM, you basically just create a "package" with typical stats like bandwidth, quota etc...and then you can create more accounts using those packages and then login into CPanel on each acc, with the difference that with H9 i can always select an IP/location before i create an acc.

In terms of SEO i dont think that it matters whether an addon domain is on the same shared IP like some other domain on the same hosting, G sees them as new domains, as far as i can tell.

I have multiple sites running on HostGator with their Baby Croc plan. Unless you are planning to run the sites for other people, you don't need a reseller plan. Their shared hosts are just fine for the vast majority of web sites.

I DO NOT intend to sell my websites, so it seems baby plan is good enough for me. But what happens if some of websites start performing really well as far as rankings, do they eat up the bandwidth?

Also has anyone tried installing wordpress blogs on addon domain. I will working with wordpress extensively in future.

Providing hosting for others has nothing to do with why many of us prefer reseller accounts. I think the name lends itself to people thinking it's only for resale of hosting.

I can go into one of my reseller accounts and change the space and bandwidth for any site in a minute. I don't know how that works with add-ons - could be similar.

Some are happy using addons but I had a problem with it as not all programs/scripts will work properly with addons. For $15 more a month, I went to a reseller account and was surprised at the ease of using it.

It depends on what you want as there is no right or wrong way to do it.
Base your decision on what you can afford and your preference.

I'm having some MAJOR problems with hostgator and it isnt the first time! last time I gave up and went to hostmonster.

Hostmonster are heaps cheaper and has more "unlimited" stuff than hostgator.

I have only just got hostgator reseller a/c cause I'm doing websites for offline clients - but for all my sites I have them hosted with hostmonster - one hosting plan for $5.95 (or something like that) per month and then I simply "add-on" the new domains.

If you buy your domains thru say godaddy - that is where you change the dns settings.

You get the dns settings you need from your HOST - so hostmonster would be ns1.hostmonster.com and ns2.hostmonster.com.

You can do anything you like with your addon domains - including wordpress blogs.

Most decent hosts have a cpanel - and usually they have "Fantastico" - thru fantastico you can add a blog to your site in a couple of clicks, as well as some other great stuff.

Ok, so not all scripts /programms will run smoothly on addons. That's my manin concern. I am using "rss to html scripts" on some websites to fetch contnt from amzon.com, so this can get into trouble with addons.

I have had 0 issues with scripts running or anything else with addons.

You can install WP just fine with addons.

and if you need more room if your site/sites require it. Just upgrade.

i still dont understand all the fuzz about "addon domains"...it doesnt matter.

It all comes down to where to install what site/blog/wordpress, addon domain creates another folder. Same thing as sub-domain, and main domain is just your "main" folder, with subs/addons then having their own folders withing the main-root folder.

Everything else is the same.

I cant even see where an addon domain should cause a problem, i never had any problems. It is totally transparent, i can make 20+ addon domains and plug 20 WP blogs on them and another 20 with subdomains on the main domain and another 20 with subdomains over the addon-domains...and this all on one hosting account. Where is the problem?

Add:

Please dont confuse any "DNS settings" which the "Nameserver settings". There is no need to mess with *DNS* settings.

Usually, your hosting gives you information about what Nameservers they use, like ns1.somehost.com...so i set my nameservers on dynadot (where i buy the NAMES) for the domains to that nameserver belogning to the hosting. Addon/Sub/Main domain does not matter, nameservers should be the same across the hosting provider.

I cant even see where an addon domain should cause a problem, i never had any problems. It is totally transparent, i can make 20+ addon domains and plug 20 WP blogs on them and another 20 with subdomains on the main domain and another 20 with subdomains over the addon-domains...and this all on one hosting account. Where is the problem?

So this means I can have a general domain name and have multiple blogs all with different niche topics by paying just one monyhly hosting fee. For example if I have abc.com as my main website, I can host

abc.com/seo-training.com
abc.com/learn-guitar.com
abc.com/home-design.com
abc.com/save-marriage.com

as addon domains that are registerd at namecheap.com all under one roof that can be accessed from a web browser as a normal website url etc....

This means everytime I have to upload files to anyone of these addons I will have to connect to abc.com from my FTP software and access the desired abc.com/website-folder.com/public_html/

This also means that if abc.com goes down I can't access anything!

hmm.. i dun think there will be any problems with addon domains. so far i have been using hostagator baby plan and everything works fine. i have about 30 domains hosted on one account.
add on domains simply means adding all the domains that you have purchased to a primary domain which you have defined when you buy the hosting plan.
but you still access the addon domains as a individual domain on the world wide web. and most hosting now provides unlimited bandwidth and space.
the only thing is you will be accessing all domains on one single control panel.
if you need to provide to other clients or friends for access to your hosting, then maybe you can consider reseller, other then that, everything is the same. if you need more details, maybe you can compare the details at the various hosting providers. hostagator, hostmonster are quite good and cheap.

you got it right, but you are referring to subdomains.

Eg. generic domain like "superiorbits.com"
hijacker.superiorbits.com
acne.superiorbits.com
marketing.superiorsbits.com

and so fort. Thats how i use subdomains usually.

But...an addon-domain is basically a main domain which is "plugged" onto an existing domain/account and then accessed as any normal domain, but on ONE account. The difference is only in the maintenance/handling on the server, eg. the addon domain
say newdomain.com has subfolder within ANOTHER account.

But you can have an addon domain like 222222.com "on top" of 1111111.com - it can be a totally different name. (You would log onto 11111111.com and then go into the 2222222.com folder. Its one account, but different domain "on top" of the other domain..but in terms of SEO it doesnt matter whether the "added domain" has actually its own hosting or is just "added" to another account.)

Subdomains are like subdomain.mydomain.com or mydomain.com/subdomain, its "basically" the same thing (in terms of hosting/maintenance) but it is always connected to the main domain and also in terms of SEO worse than having a addon-domain because the addon domain is basically independent from the main domain.

Another aspect that you may want to consider is Shared SSL vs Private SSL and how they apply to what you're doing. Hostgator's business account allows for one free Private SSL and a dedicated IP. Don't overlook this important detail as it's very important if you're doing e-commerce, accepting CC, etc. You won't get those with the hatchling or baby tiers.

Secondly, you indicated that you wouldn't be selling your domains. However, if the scenario came up where you would (I'm sure for the right price), then it'd be so much easier with a reseller account, not to mention you could keep that customer for residual income.

Two more thoughts to ponder. Consider your security vulnerability. If some runt exploits one of your sites and gains access, they don't potentially compromise ALL of your sites.

Secondly, restoring 1 of 10 from a backup is so much easier than doing 10 of 10.
