You have to be an approved seller in the ibooks market place, have an ISBN etc. Would have been much cooler if it was a less closed distribution platform.

      Hey Brad,

I wasn't aware of the ISBN requirement, but at $50.00 for one (at least what found), it could go a long way towards keeping junk out of the iBooks store.

Otherwise, the other requirements seem pretty basic and straightforward to me, unless I missed something.

On a side note: Getting apps into the App store isn't free, but if you create something of high quality, it can be a great revenue source. Seems like the same thing would apply here.

They still have to approve you as a publisher. Which is next to impossible unless you are a big publisher. They are pretty cagey with self publishers on itunes and ibooks.

I think they get good returns for this service but from companies only as obtaining an ISBN number is not a kids play and not every one can afford it.....

If they offered a marketplace like amazon where people can sell their un-registered products too it might help much more....

Seems to me that Apple's move is another step in the disruption of the publishing business. Only this applies to textbooks. It may be bad for paper publishers but they already know that there is a big digital problem for their model.

Apple has enlisted the big boys, so maybe this will evolve into a really good thing.....and I mean a really good thing for textbook users.

The information I saw was that this was open to ANYONE who wants to publish a book. They've even made their publishing tools available as a free download on the Mac App Store.

Of course, the focus was on textbooks, but it wasn't limited to them.
