Anonymous takes down Department of Justice, RIAA, Motion Picture Association and Universal Music — RT

Hacktivists with the collective Anonymous are waging an attack on the website for the White House after successfully breaking the sites for the Department of Justice, Universal Music Group, RIAA and Motion Picture Association of America.
In response to today's federal raid on the file sharing service Megaupload, hackers with the online collective Anonymous have broken the websites for the Department of Justice, Universal Music Group, RIAA and Motion Picture Association of America.

"It was in retaliation for Megaupload, as was the concurrent attack on Justice.org," Anonymous operative Barrett Brown tells RT on Thursday afternoon.
Only hours before the DoJ and Universal sites went down, news broke that Megaupload, a massive file sharing site with a reported 50 million daily users, was taken down by federal agents. Four people linked to Megaupload were arrested in New Zealand and an international crackdown led agents to serving at least 20 search warrants across the globe.
Less than an hour after the DoJ and Universal sites came down, the website for the RIAA, or Recording Industry Association of America, went offline as well.
Minutes later, MPAA.org also returned an error as Anonymous hacktivists managed to bring the website for the Motion Picture Association of America. The group, headed by former senator Chris Dodd, is an adamant supporter of both PIPA and SOPA legislation.
Universal Music Group, or UMG, is the largest record company in the United States and under its umbrella are the labels Interscope-Geffen-A&M, the Island Def Jam Motown Music Group and Mercury Records.
Brown adds that "more is coming" and Anonymous-aligned hacktivists are pursuing a joint effort with others to "damage campaign raising abilities of remaining Democrats who support SOPA."
Although many members of Congress have just this week changed their stance on the controversial Stop Online Piracy Act, or SOPA, the raid on Megaupload Thursday proved that the feds don't need SOPA or its sister legislation, PIPA, in order to pose a blow to the Web.
Brown adds that operatives involved in the project will use an "experimental campaign" and search engine optimization techniques "whereby to forever saddle some of these congressmen with their record on this issue."

Well, I expected our gov to start WWIII. Looks like we might end up with the first full fledged cyber war at the very least. At this point, we may have had no other choice. I just hope it's a war that the people can win. I'm not a good loser. Not when my constitutional rights are the prize of the fight.

"The People" do not benefit from this no matter which side "wins." And Anonymous just handed the Internet regulation proponents a huge bit of propaganda, with which I cannot/will not argue.

Destructive assault is a measure of last resort, not the first thing you do when someone disagrees with you. And becoming destructive to support a company that appeared to have existed for the primary purpose of distributing pirated files? Not gonna get them any sympathy.

They screwed up, unless their goal is to start a war no-one can win.

  • Actually, probably not a good idea to take down The Whitehouse.org site...they were on our side - Obama is getting heat from Hollywood on his anti-SOPA stance -

If you really tick these guys off, they will brand it 'cyber-terrorism', and you know where that might go...

(but on the plus side...I've been pushing for spammers to be branded that for years!)

His word means squat. He was supposedly anti-NDAA too - but it was later revealed it was his administration that asked for the domestic terms put into it - then after promising to veto it, he didn't. Anyone who trusts his word now has a memory of less than a month.

Just going with today's news palaver Sal...(besides, 'naive' spelled backwards is 'evian' and I don't drink that fancy french H2O stuff! )

And Paul is right - not a good time to show the government how vulnerable they are...it's like shooting a Grizzly Bear, and we haven't had a chance to "file down our sites"* yet...

Carefully, folks. Let's stick to the relevant legislative topics, and not stray into politics any more than the subject requires, eh?

Great article in 2600 this month about Anonymous, and how conflicts aren't always clearly defined as "good guy/bud guy". I find it telling that Time magazine chose "The Protester" as Person of the Year and see that as a pretty significant comment on the current of unrest throughout the world.

But nonetheless people cannot sit behind their computer screens and do nothing, this is an act of censorship beyond the norm.
People can speak in ways that are heard - look at yesterday, for example. If you choose to sit and say nothing - that's your choice. Many of us made our voices heard in D.C. Nobody forced you to not speak up or stopped you from speaking out. You weren't censored at all.

Anonymous is doing exactly what they just fought against. When you attack someone's content and take down their site - you are censoring it. You are also abusing your power as someone with hacking skills.

When a group of people decide to abuse sites of others to push their own beliefs - they are no better than the legislation they want to avoid. That's where Anonymous has placed itself now.

I figured this was coming either yesterday or today if only because Anonymous can't settle for having its voice heard - it has to show off a bit, too. It's called cyber terrorism - and it's not something to applaud.

In the long run they all act like children. It's kind of a show of who has the biggest testicles, and unfortunately a lot of people who just want to go about their business get thrown in the middle. I wish they would all go away

I guess some could argue that by taking down the government websites that these old politicians with no idea how the Internet works could see this as cyber terrorism. And as a result believe that Sopa is the answer to some misconstrued it reason.

But nonetheless people cannot sit behind their computer screens and do nothing, this is an act of censorship beyond the norm. In fact it's ironic that America wage war on countries that are run by dictators but are slowly slipping into a country of censorship themselves.

Attacking government web sites only adds legitimacy to some peoples idea that the internet needs to be more tightly regulated.

Many of the pimply-faced nerds who are responsible for this are going to cry when the FBI plucks them from their mothers' basements.

Well on the bright side, we have two of the most hated groups on the internet going head to head. On one hand, you have juvenile hackers who pose a threat to internet security. On the other hand, you have Big Brother government who poses a threat to internet freedom.

I say we all just really sit back and watch. At worst, one side loses but that also leaves us in the middle with one less enemy to deal with. At best, they wipe each other out and we both get a nice balance of freedom and security.

Well.. I know its probably not gonna do much, but I've created (dont laugh, I suck at GFX) a sig and linked it to the petition.

I'm keeping it uploaded until after the govt has voted.

As for the attacks by Anonymous.. thats not cool man.

I have always been a supporter of those guys/gals, but there are better ways to address this situation than denial of service attacks.
